Just One Thing by Rick Hanson is a non-fiction, self-help selection that suggests strategies to retrain your brain and your thought process to live a more positive and fulfilling life. I've followed Rick for a short time now and I believe that his practices will work for anyone looking to improve their life. Rick uses scientific facts and studies of the brain and its different sectors. He shows ways that one can re-train their brain to capture more positive thoughts than negative ones. Reading Just One Thing has repositioned my thought process and I have implemented positive life choices that I intend to exemplify in the coming New Year. Unlike many books of this genre and topic, Just One Thing is one of those books that you will find yourself referring back to on a regular basis. There are fifty-two principles to follow in this book--that's one principle per week. The principles rang from relaxation and sleep, to smiling and being generous. This book review is based on an electronic galley; however, I will be purchasing the book for my self-improvement library as I feel is a book that will be used frequently.

Excellent practices for developing mindfulness. With 52 practices you can open the book to a random page and read that 3 to 5 page chapter, and then take a pause to actually do the practices suggested. Rick explains the concept and gives practical "how to" that can be practiced. I recommend this book to many of the "too busy" professionals I work with that are wanting to develop mindfulness and a more meaningful life in general. While there is a Buddhist flavor to some of the practices, you can be atheist, agnostic, or a theist deeply steeped in your specific path and still find benefit from this well written book. Don't just read it... make space for the practices

In my work as a psychotherapist I rarely recommend self-help books, because most of them aren't worth the paper they're printed on. But once in a while a book comes along that really has the power to change our lives for the better. One such book is Just One Thing, by Rick Hanson. Rick is both a neuropsychologist and a meditation teacher, and he uses the new findings of neuroscience to show how very simple mind-training techniques, practiced for just a few minutes daily, can radically improve our well-being.The science behind the practices involves a simple principle: every time you use your mind you alter the structure of your brain. Everything you pay attention to, everything you think, feel and want, every time you react to what happens to you - all of these things sculpt your brain. Busy regions of the brain get more blood flow, and little-used neural connections wither away. "Neurons that fire together wire together" - every time you repeat any mental activity, you strengthen it and make it easier to become a habit. What this means is that if your mind regularly focuses on worries, anger, or self-criticism, then your brain develops neural structures supporting anxiety, low self-esteem, and impatience with others. But if you regularly focus your attention on noticing that you're all right now, not taking life personally, cultivating gratitude, or letting go - then gradually your brain re-shapes itself to support calm strength, self-confidence, and inner peace. So, for instance, regularly taking the time for mindfulness pauses activates the part of the brain that puts the brakes on negative feelings, and thus lifts mood. Other practices, such as taking in the good, feeling safer, relaxing anxiety about imperfection, or filling the hole in your heart, support and increase your sense of security and worth, resilience, effectiveness, and well-being.This book is very user-friendly. Each chapter title names a specific practice, and the rest of the chapter, which is never more than a few pages, tells you why to do it, and then how to do it. The practices themselves usually involve actions you take in your mind, such as reflecting, concentrating, or focusing your attention, and they only take a few minutes to do per day. But doing them regularly gradually re-shapes the brain to reduce stress and unhappiness, and to develop positive qualities. They're exactly like physical exercise; any single time you work out, not much changes, but over time your health and strength improve. We all understand that we have to make effort regularly over time to do things like learning how to drive a car or play basketball, but we typically think the mind should just work fine on its own, without any effort or discipline. Rick Hanson shows us how some very down-to-earth actions can turn an unruly mind into one that is focused, strong, and happy. I recommend this book highly.

I ordered this book about a week ago to help with some severe anxiety( as a result I've been having some uncomfortable health related side effects). I'm honestly no more then 29 pages in and feel as if its helping.I have coupled the exercises in this book with a new daily yoga regime, and already I'm finding myself more at ease, more accepting of myself, and more patient with my kids. Its really helping. The simplicity of this book is key. We're not aiming for enlightenment here, just peace of mind and a state of physical and mental calm...no lofty goals, just a sense that things are okay. Most exercises (so far) involve gently rethinking things, and letting oneself feel the positive moments in life. The writing is based on neuropsychological research, which means the aim is to really reshape the pathways of the your brain...making permanent long term change. This book is a valuable tool for anyone who is anxiety prone, prone to depression, or just prone negative self talk. This is one I will always carry with me. Wonderful, simple stuff! My thanks to the author!!

I liked this book less than the Clean Code, but it was a better read for me than the Clean Coder. I've found a distillation of this book in article from Robert Martin, which he wrote in 2012 while working at 8th Light (I cannot paste a link in here). The book is partially a very detailed description of the ideas from the article and what is behind them. The book starts with 3 myths we developers live in:1. Myth: We just need to get to market first and we clean it up later.2. Myth: Messy code makes us faster today and slows us later. Myth: We can switch mode from making messes to cleaning messes. (making messes is always slower, even in very short term as shown in example of a simple kata in the book)3. Myth: Starting from scratch is a solution. There is a well written history lesson in the next part. Uncle Bob presents Structured Programming, OOP and Functional Programming and says there is nothing else (programming paradigm-wise) to be invented. Part 3 is about SOLID principles from architecture point of view and part 4 are his Component Principles about component cohesion and coupling from his Agile Software Development book.Part 5 is about Architecture and was the most interesting to read. Most memorable chapters for me were the Screaming Architecture and the Clean Architecture. Both of them are not new, you could have seen them in his videos or the article from 8thlight. The point of Screaming Architecture is that when a new developer joins a health-care project, he should be able to immediately tell "this is a health-care project" just from the project structure. Another topic which was part of multiple chapters, are micro-services. I felt that Robert Martin is not very fond of starting with them. He says services are little more than expensive function calls and as a communication mechanism between the project boundaries (i.e. a detail), they are a decision which should be deffered as far as possible.Part 6, the Details, are a detailed explanations of his article Clean Architecture from 2012. There is a little gem in there, the Missing Chapter 34 written by Simon Brown. I liked his explanation of 4 different kinds of packaging classes together to form components.

I was hesitant to buy this book because Uncle Bob is known in software community as a fundamentalist zealot for his views on software design and testing (TDD). This book starts out with similar hard views and he claims that a useless program that is easy to maintain is better than a useful program that is impossible to maintain. I have seen a lot of bad design and implementations in my twenty plus years of experience as a software architect/engineer but nothing is impossible. As a profession software engineer, you are expected to support business and have to work with various constraints in your organization. These constraints vary based on the context and unique environment, which is why I prefer Kent Beck’s advice of making it work, making it right (refactoring) and making it fast. Most of first one third of the book provides overview of programming paradigms such as structured design, object oriented, and functional decomposition. He then covers SOLID principles that he is best known for, i.e. single responsibility principle (SRP), open-close principle, liskov substitution principle, interface separation principle (ISP) and dependency inversion principle. In my opinion, these principles can be boiled down to interface/implementation separation and using composition over inheritance (concrete). He then applies these principles to components design such as reuse/release equivalence principle for releasing same component together, common closure principle similar to SRP and common reuse principle for using interfaces similar to ISP. Uncle Bob provides useful advice for using acyclic dependency principle for dependencies between components and ensuring that abstract/interfaces are used in stable components and volatile components (concrete implementation) should depend on stable components and not otherwise. The last one quarter of the book finally starts with explanation on clean architecture that uses hexagonal architecture. He states that architecture should be independent of frameworks, UI and database. His definition of architecture only focuses on component design and communication but I use architecture as any design decision that is costly to change and often that include choice of databases, frameworks and UI. He uses layers and boundaries to divide system into various components and recommends use of entities for business policies, using techniques such as humble object pattern for testing hard to test components. In final chapters, he proposed designing components based on use cases instead of horizontal, which has worked better in my experience when working on a large system. In the end, this book has plenty of nuggets on design of components but take this advice with a grain of salt. Uncle Bob’s militant views on clean design, test driven development and his abhorrence for tools is not very pragmatic. For example, he doesn’t mention technical debt, refactoring or dealing with legacy systems. Though, he pays attention to maintainability but he ignores most of other non functional requirements such as scalability, availability, reliability and ignores emphasis on developer productivity. In my experience, software design and development should start with the business requirements, constraints and organization structure. You may be working in a startup that needs to prove an idea with minimal effort or you may be working on designing a service with a large number of users. Similarly, you may be working with a small team or on a large project that needs to interact with a number of teams where you may need to apply Conway’s law to design the system. In real world, you face these choices instead of writing perfect components with 100% test coverage, which may be maintainable but not useful to anyone and thus killing your company and leaving you without work.

I have read four books, dozens of articles, and have watched scores of videos by Uncle Bob. As always I found this one fascinating and well written. Bob has a flare for synthesizing very complex technical material from many sources, then boiling it down to easily and enjoyably absorbable explanations. He manages the magic of combining theoretically deep discussion with a very practical, even advice-like perspective. I'm so happy he's made himself the uncle of young programmers like me and invited us to squat on his lawn.My caveat is that, having gone through so much of Bob's previous material, there was unfortunately much here that was already familiar to me, including some sections that are taken almost verbatim from his previous writings. In itself this is no problem - had it been the first I ever read of the man I would be totally ecstatic about it, and it's reasonable of him to assume that most readers would not have followed him around the internets as assiduously as I have. But I was hoping to hear more about topics he only hinted at in his blog posts, e.g. the different kinds of architecture implied by different desired user experiences. I read him mention event-driven, request-based, and batch processing, and I was assuming he would elaborate on these ideas in this book, which he does not. There are many other details I wish he'd gone into or at least offered good follow-up reading on, such as presenters and the creation of use cases. Finally, he does not appear to provide the name of the stellar body on the cover, which is an unfortunate break with custom.

In this cookbook, a single gluten-free cake recipe won’t require 5 different flours, cornstarch and a load of chocolate & vanilla to cover up the taste of quinoa flour. These recipes embrace the taste of flavorful flours. I made a moist and delicious oat flour sponge cake that only contained oat flour, sugar, clarified butter, salt and eggs.Usually a combination of a flavor flour and rice flour is used for most recipes. The majority of the recipes don’t use xanthan gum.The recipes range from easy to complex. The cakes I baked were moist, delicious and not crummy or dry. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I pressed a gluten-free sponge cake with a fork and it sprung back without crumbling. I made a jelly roll cake and the cake rolled-up beautifully. It didn’t break or tear.I’ve been baking gluten-free for about 6 years. I’ve never encountered recipes like these. The recipes weren’t developed to imitate wheat-based recipes. Rather, the recipes rely on and embrace the unique characteristics of non-wheat flours.

Quickly:The good - a few basic recipes to experiment with, a sponge cake recipe for every flour presented, good overview of each flour at chapter start, nice photos and appealing recipes, thorough guidance in introduction and within each recipe, doesn't require all-purpose flour mixThe bad - larger emphasis than some might prefer on nuts and cream cheese, not all oat brands are gluten-free, no index in kindle version, does not give details on problem-solving performed by author for specific flours, weight measurements are only for (most) dry ingredientsLonger:I have a few friends who are gluten-free, so I am always looking for new recipes to try that everyone can enjoy instead of having to bake them something "special" that doesn't turn out as well as the wheat-full item I make. All these recipes are gluten-free (assuming you use gluten-free oats), but many are not nut-free. In case that's something you worry about, a rough estimate is that about 60 of these recipes contain nuts, which is roughly half of all the recipes. Also, cream cheese is used as a glue for quite a few recipes, serving a purpose similar to xantham gum, which could be a problem for dairy-free or cream-cheese-disliking people.Alice Medrich's recipe for Flourless Chocolate Cake is my go-to recipe for delicious, gluten-free chocolate dessert, so I figured she would have some good ideas. I absolutely love the fact that her first step in creating these recipes was to bake a génoise with every single flour independently, and observe how each flour behaved differently, and we get the perfected recipes here. I do wish that she had not chosen to leave out the details of testing and problem-solving for each of the flours. I feel like that could have made this book exceptional and the foremost source for baking with a single grain. While it's unfortunate that I will have to muddle through without knowing the details of what she's already tried and failed, I am reasonably happy with what is presented here. I really like not having to make an all-purpose gluten-free flour mix, so I am happy to follow Alice's lead in using just one or two flours in one recipe. It's exciting to learn more about the individual flavor of each grain. This book is laid out by flours, rather than by baked-good type. I am not sure why, but there does not appear to be an index in the kindle version. There should be a general and flour-based index (there is in the print version) that comes after the acknowledgements, but my kindle version just has conversion charts and an about the author. Across all the flours, there are 3 biscuit recipes, 3 cobbler recipes, 4 brownie recipes, ~51 cake recipes (in part because there is a génoise recipe for each flour), 11 frosting/glaze recipes, 39 cookie recipes, 11 tart recipes, 7 pudding recipes, 3 cracker recipes, a "general guideline" recipe for pancakes, waffles and crepes, as well as some other miscellaneous recipes (scones, soufflé, beignets). There is no recipe list at the beginning of each chapter, so it might be a bit hard to find what you are looking for in the kindle version. At the beginning of each chapter, Alice tells us what the flavor affinities are for each flour, how to obtain it, and gives a brief history and description - plus a photo. One thing that I've noticed in reading through these recipes is that a substantial proportion of these recipes (especially the cookies, scones, tarts, and biscuits) require either a longish (but unattended) wait time, either prior to baking or after baking but before eating. There is roughly one photo to go along with every two or three recipes. Each recipe gives the volume measurements; only the flours, sugar, butter, and nuts/dry fruit also have a weight measurement. This is a bit odd since such an emphasis is placed on having exactly the perfect level of hydration in the batter, yet all liquid ingredients and also spices, yeast, salt, and fruit are left to be measured out with potentially lower precision than the flour. The reason I still like this book, despite my misgivings, is that there are some really standout recipes with beautiful photos and there do not appear to be any obvious problems with recipe editing or measurements (none that I've caught anyways). I'm excited to try the lemon tart (corn flour), butterscotch pudding (rice flour), poppy seed pound cake (oat/rice flour), and sorghum layer cake with walnut praline buttercream (sorghum/rice). Alice writes her recipes and guidance very carefully here and I've never made a flop from any of her cookbooks, so I expect the trend will continue, now with gluten-free deliciousness.

This book won't be for everyone, but it was precisely the book I needed right now, and it might be a good choice for you, too. I would describe "Flavor Flours" as a "special occasion dessert" cookbook. It is important to know that this book USES ancient grain flours but is primarily a gluten-free version of a "traditional sweets & cakes" cookbook for baking sugary, often dairy-laden desserts. It is not allergen free. It is not low carb. It does result in delicious desserts that TASTE JUST AS DELICIOUS as the old, glutenous cakes I used to eat. I really needed the emotional pick-me-up of feeling like delicious food was available to me at this time in my life, with a medically-required, limited diet.In my case, I am not sensitive to BUTTER even though I must avoid all other dairy, so I still find many, many recipes available to me in "Flavor Flours." I bought the book, read it cover to cover, bookmarked many pages, but have tried only two recipes so far. (I need to buy more equipment as I used to purchase ready-made cakes instead of baking at home.)After about 10 months of a major health crisis that was impacting every hour of every day of my life in a significant way, getting only moderate help from drugs and wishing to avoid ramping up to heavier duty medications with even more severe side effects, I undertook an "elimination diet" with my specialist's (rheumatologist) blessing, assistance from my primary care doctor (a referral) and an integrative medicine nutritionist helping me design my personalized program. Three months in, I've reduced my pain and some of the limitations on my activities while also reducing my need for pain medication (almost completely!) and halving my dose of maintenance medication. This is wonderful... but I've also been forced to cook, from scratch at home, almost every single bit of food I've eaten in this time. I'm proud of what I've accomplished, but I'm not an enthusiastic cook and I'm very, VERY tired of working so hard to produce food, most of which is only tolerable to my palate, not delicious. This book isn't going to cure me of my boredom with this burden of cooking or revolutionize my daily meals. It isn't meant to. Simply reading it was enough to give me a mental pick-me-up, though. I loved the author's scientific approach to discovering the character of each featured flour. Baking the same type of cake with each strikes me as elegant investigation, not a waste of time. I may try each one myself so I can learn more myself. After my first baking attempt (buckwheat pumpkin bread), my strong liking of the book climbed to a definite 5 star love. Even though I hate baking from a Kindle cookbook, the process was a triumph. The layout of the recipe was manageable on an iPad; the directions were thorough but not wordy, telling me PRECISELY what I needed to know but wasting none of my time. I feel empowered, by this book, to undertake more exotic baking processes than would normally appeal to me. This book made me very, very happy, and I also got a delicious dessert.I feel compelled to offer a little more detail about my lack of interest in cooking. To be clear, I am not actually without cooking skills, or "bad at cooking"--I just don't like it. I have successfully baked bread, I am more likely to make food from scratch than from boxes, etc. What I don't typically have is enough interest in cooking to take extra steps where a simpler process results in an acceptable result. (For example, if browning meat before cooking stew in my crockpot makes excellent food, but skipping that step makes good food, I will often choose the simpler technique with the less sumptuous result.) On the other hand, I have an educated opinion on what constitutes healthy eating, for myself and for my family, and I choose high quality food regardless of expense. I very much enjoy fine dining and will pay for the privilege. I'm not unaware of what makes excellent food, but I'm not usually the SOURCE of said delicacies. That said, most of my forays into more complex cooking have been in the baking arena, because I love sweets and prefer the oven and "closed cooking environments" to anything on the stovetop.I mention this to make clear that this cookbook is inspirational for someone like me--perhaps "well-read but functionally lazy" is a fair description of my culinary level?

This book has so many grammatical errors that it is distracting to the reader. I cannot judge whether the content is accurate or not because, as the title of the book states, I am a beginner. I can't believe that a publisher would allow this book to go to print without proper proofing! I am very disappointed. The large amount of grammatical errors makes me question the technical content of the book. After all, if they cannot bother to proof read for grammar, how do I know it was proof read for technical accuracy? Luckily, I did not spend too much to purchase, otherwise I would be furious!

I found much of the content to be good but there are a lot of glaring typos and formatting errors. For example, the table of contents show there are 12 chapters, but the book's interior takes chapters 11 and 12 and labels them 17 and 18. When I got to these chapters, I was honestly worried that chapters 11-16 were completely missing. There are spelling and grammatical errors galore. These detract from the author's credibility to not have proofread or polished the book before publishing. Not to mention, I suspect this barely scratches the surface on information actually covered on the exam. Hence, why I'll go read the actual study guide next.

Good general overview of things you need to know to pass the certification test. There were some minor details missing that I found in other guides and minor grammatical errors, but other than that, this book is a great help.

Brought this product said "Ultimate Study Comptia A+ for Beginners" but it was the Ultimate Out of date-product.Make sure the product is still relevant.

I know few about computer parts and I want to know more about computers. I am trying to find some guide about computer and accidentally saw this book. I got interested about it because this book is for examination so I think it will help me a lot. I started reading this book and found that it is good to study. I like the information that this book has but some of the information here are not clear enough and needed to explain well.

Good study material. Helped me figure alot about computers out that i would like to know before taking the exam.

I have comforted close friends in the past who have lost their loved ones. But I personally grieved myself. Life has been pretty good to my family but I know that can change in an instant and I can never predict what I'll go through next. I read this book purely out of curiosity so I can possibly cope with future situations the best I can and well, the advice is powerful and it goes through many chapters from understanding grief to healing. Then I realized how important it is to read this book while I'm still okay so I have a clear mind and open to learning. I think reading this during my stage of grief would make things much more difficult to grasp. It's a really good book.

This book provides much useful information that has helped me through some difficult days over the past couple of months. The only complaint that I have is the formatting of the book. Section headings that lack formatting and incomplete sentences sometimes make reading a little difficult but it does not take away from the content. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is working through the grief process.

Wonderful book for anyone who is grieving. I truly helped me understand what I was feeling.

The book itself is great but the kindle version has problems. There are incomplete sentences and discussions. For example, chapter 4 discusses "ten steps to healing a broken heart" and presents up to the ninth step but not the tenth. Please!

FAST shipping!Exactly what I wanted and came as described!I'm very impressed and very happy with my purchase!Thank you!
