From the Back Cover

A New York Times Notable Book of the Year“Powerful . . . Presents a deeply moving human face that brings the stunning numbers to life. It is an explosive book . . . The stories will make you angry and break your heart.” — American Prospect  Jessica ComptonÂ’s family of four would have no income if she didnÂ’t donate plasma twice a week at her local donation center in Tennessee. Modonna Harris and her teenage daughter, Brianna, in Chicago, often have no food but spoiled milk on weekends. After two decades of brilliant research on American poverty, Kathryn Edin noticed something she hadnÂ’t seen before — households surviving on virtually no cash income. Edin teamed with Luke Shaefer, an expert on calculating incomes of the poor, to discover that the number of American families living on $2.00 per person, per day, has skyrocketed to one and a half million households, including about three million children. Where do these families live? How did they get so desperately poor? Through this bookÂ’s eye-opening analysis and many compelling profiles, moving and startling answers emerge. $2.00 a Day delivers new evidence and new ideas to our national debate on income inequality.  “Harrowing . . . [An] important and heart-rending book, in the tradition of Michael HarringtonÂ’s The Other America.” — Los Angeles Times  Kathryn J. Edin, professor of sociology and public health at Johns Hopkins University, is the author of Promises I Can Keep: Why Poor Women Put Motherhood Before Marriage.H. Luke Shaefer, associate professor at the University of Michigan School of Social Work, is a research affiliate at the National Poverty Center. Â

If you thought $1 -2 dollar a day was for third world countries, this book will jolt you into reality. Granted, our poverty (U.S) stats have graced some news outfits over the last few years, but not with this detail. It takes you into the heart of peoples' lives living this less than American dream. It will make you think twice the next time news media or politicians spin negative on the poor...the majority really do desire to work.

This is one of those books that is not an easy read. Don't get me wrong, the words flow nicely, I don't mean that. I mean the subject. When I purchased this book, I thought it was a book about how to live on $2.00 a day. I didn't realize it was a horrific look at people who were living on $2 a day! The writing drew me in and the stories kept me reading. I cried for the harshness of the world as I read things I never thought about before. It never dawned on me that house cleaners would have to haul their own water to derelict houses to clean because the water was turned off. I never thought about what you do when there is only so much money for gas and your roommate uses all of it, leaving you unable to drive to work. This book is very well written and very well researched. It is one I will keep and look back on when I feel that my life is tough, because my life is not as tough as the people cameoed in the book.

Poverty has been with us since the founding of the country, and most likely will always exist to some extent. The question we need to ask ourselves what level of poverty are we willing to tolerate? This book examines poverty in America today and what possible changes could eliminate the worst poverty that we find.Imagine if you had to live on $2.00 a day, with no other cash available. Either you find a place to sleep with friends, relatives or you spend time in a shelter until you are not allowed to stay any longer. Imagine, to, that you want to work, but due to physical ailments or lack of work you are unable to get, and keep a job. That is happening in America today and to me, it is unacceptable. The authors looked to find families in these straights and, surprisingly to the authors, they had little trouble finding people living under such conditions. The book evaluates the lives a a number of these families in several parts of the country, and then examines ways that the situation could be minimized, if not eliminated. In addition, the authors examined various forms of welfare from the 1930s until today, and pointed out which forms worked, which didn't and which could be made better with tweaks to the system. The authors do not advocate returning to the cash welfare model that existed until the mid 1990s, but rather improve the systems we have today. For example, cash assistance is still available to the truly needy, but Washington gave this assistance to states as block grants, allowing them wide latitude over how the money would be spent. And surprise….most did away with almost all cash assistance, and used the money in other ways. The authors advocate for the levels of money stay the same, but changing the rules and making the states use the money for its intended purpose. The book is interesting and eye opening. Who would have thought that one of the most prosperous nations on earth could have such poverty levels right under our noses. I was disappointed that the authors chose to examine families only to the east of the Mississippi River, as there is poverty here in California that rivals and may even exceed that found in the east. By removing the west coast, it made it seem like all the poverty was located in eastern states.A recommended read for all.

This book makes me want to thank my mother, profusely, for everything she did for me/us while I was growing up. Until reading this exposé, I hadn't really realized that some of her own strategies *were* actually strategies -- I just thought that, for example, going to the library a few times a week was what everyone did.It also made me think to the time I spent living in the Bronx during grad school (yes!), making dismal adjunct wages relative to New York City living conditions. My neighbors would occasionally see me out reading on my stoop -- not making dinner --, and one family in particular paid special attention: even though the 3 of them (a mother, father, and teenage daughter) lived in a one-bedroom apartment, they often brought me a plate of whatever meal they had made. I knew that they did not have much, but of course to refuse the meal would be rude (and besides, the food was hearty and delicious). Since meeting them, I have had a soft spot for the supposed "lazy" people who get government subsidies. Some, like the family I knew, made do fairly well with what they had. Others, such as the people featured in this book, could only *wish* they had enough food to share. In some senses, $2 A Day preaches to the choir; it's likely that those who are buying and reading the book 1) aren't in the position of its case studies, 2) already know there's a problem with how America's poor are "dealt with," and 3) are already fairly sympathetic to the issues that this volume addresses. But in many other ways, the book is, not to sound too cliché, a revelation. For one, the notion that "we, as a country, aren't spending less on poor families than we once did. ... In fact, we now spend much more" struck me in particular, and signals that the very readership the book probably targets are also probably the most able and willing to address the problems. While the book sometimes veers into moderately-lengthy analyses of government policies, which might tire some readers, I feel that it presents a good mixture between these and the case studies showing these policies "at work," so to speak. I don't think this book will be the next Freshman Read, but I do think it can hold its own in the roster of readable sociology texts for perhaps the next decade. (Hopefully, the next book coming out won't present a worse picture of things.) If anything, it makes one think about what one has, or hasn't had.

Very useful book especially for those starting their collections. The only flaws are an incomplete catalog of figures and a total lack of special collections ex. the Egyptian pieces in black and gilt.

An excellent source to help collectors identify their items. The author details the beginning of Jasper Ware and changes made through the years. His descriptions of the shapes and scenes depicted are priceless. The photograps alone are worth the purchase price.I just wish I had this collectors guide when I first started my collection. I am thoroughly delighted with this book.

Great Ref.

Since I am such a fan of Wedgwood, I have really enjoyed scanning through the book, and finding new information on these beautiful pieces.

If you are looking for classic Wedgewood, this book is very helpful. It is also helpful in identifying the bas reliefs.

The title of this book suggests that it is a guide to all Wedgwood Jasper Ware, but the author concentrates strictly on dipped jasper ware. The title should indicate this. The text of the book also is filled with the author's opinions that dipped jasper ware is somehow superior to solid Wedgwood jasper ware and that the latter category of wares is rather declasse. He is certainly entitled to his opinions but they should not be presented as standard for Wedgwood collectors. His collection (and therefore his book)concentrates on a very specific period of production that he prefers but as I stated above the title does not indicate this. Having said that, am I sorry that I purchased this book (indeed pre-ordered it and waited several months for it?) Not at all. The photographs are sumptuous, and that section of the book is superb. The shapes of the pieces and subjects of the bas reliefs listed apply to all types of Wedgwood wares, dipped jasper, solid jasper, basalt, Queensware, drab ware, etc. For this very reason, the book is a valuable reference. Quality books on Wedgwood are few and far between and older ones are difficult to find if one wants to own them and not have to go to a library. In conclusion, drool over the pictures, but divide the text into two categories: Wedgwood history (which the book is short on) and author's opinion (of which there is plenty.)An addendum of second thoughts:The book convinced me to acquire my first piece of dipped jasperware. I can certainly see why the author raves about the quality of the workmanship during this period of production. The dipped jasper has qualities that more modern solid jasper does not offer but the solid jasper has wonderful qualities of its own. I will not go so far as to say that one is superior to the other, but that each needs to be appreciated for what it is. I am grateful to the author for expanding my (Wedgwood jasper) vision.

the author was very informative and the descriptions of the base reliefs was great

A collector's guide and shape book filled with wonderful color photographs of the many varieties of Wedgwood jasper ware dip. Author Michael Herman shares his knowledge and experience with other collectors. It not only provides basic information so important to the beginning collector. It is a resource for all collectors in this area. Each piece is identified as fully as possible-including the bas relief figures.Dark blue does predominate, not a surprise, as it was the most popular color. Still the other jasper ware colors are well represented. Most of the pieces illustrated were made between the mid 19th century and the virtual end of jasper dip production in 1940. It is indeed refreshing to have a book that focuses on this period in this area of collecting. The timeless appeal of Wedgwood jasper ware is so well illustrated.

End of the Spear, by Steve Saint

From the Back Cover

"When I was a boy, I cried. But now I see it well." Steve Saint was only five years old when his father was brutally killed by Waodani warriors, men from the most savage culture ever known. But in a story almost too amazing to be true, Steve eventually comes to know-and even love-the very ones who drove the spears into his father's body. Decades after their lives were changed by learning to walk God's trail, the Waodani asked Steve to return to the jungle with his family to live among them again and teach them how to interact with the encroaching outside world. Striving to mesh his two very different worlds, Steve must face the tragic events of his past and learn to fully trust God through terrible danger, great loss, and remarkable joy.

About the Author

Steve Saint grew up in Ecuador in close community with the Waodani. His father, Nate Saint, was one of five missionaries martyred in their attempt to befriend the Waodani. After graduating from Wheaton College, Steve launched several successful businesses. He has also been a missionary in West Africa, Central America, and South America. At the request of the Waodani elders, he returned to the Amazon in 1995 along with his family. Steve's experiences living in the jungle led him to establish I-TEC, a nonprofit organization that assists the "hidden church" in its journey toward independence, self-sustenance, and maturity.

I had previously read several of the books written by some of the widows of the five missionaries who were speared to death in the Ecuador jungle while trying to reach indigenous tribes for Christ. The story of the five missionaries touched the hearts of many, many people around the world. I was deeply touched by the story of what happened in the jungles of Ecuador to these five young men seeking to serve and obey God's calling on their lives. I was very pleased to come across Steve Saint's book. I felt like it was the next "chapter" in the story that continues long after the deaths of the five missionaries. Steve's story shows that the deaths of the missionaries were not in vain. He shares how the door was opened for his Aunt Rachel to live among and minister to the Waodani Indians for many decades. Amazingly, Steve feels the call of God on his life to take his wife and children and live among the very people who were responsible for his father's and the other four missionaries deaths. Although, he struggles greatly with this decision, as does his wife, they are obedient to God and move to the Amazon to live among the Waodani. It's amazing to me how Steve and his family were so loved and accepted by the Waodani and how they come to love these precious people in return. To see how such people from two incredibly different worlds come together and accept each other as family is simply amazing and shows the strength of love and forgiveness in the human heart. I feel like reading this book gave me some sense of closure to what was such a tragic situation originally. To see how God worked through this tragedy to ultimately bring the gospel to the Waodani, demonstrates the biblical truth that what the devil meant for evil God turns around for good!!!!! To see how God healed the hearts of Steve and those affected by the deaths of the five missionaries and how they ultimately accepted this once brutal tribe into their hearts and lives shows the strength and power of God's love. Fantastic read which I recommend to all.

Have you ever read a book that touched you so deeply that you didn't want to start another because this one needed to sink in. That's how I feel about End of the Spear. It's the true story of Steve Saint's quest to help the native tribe of the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle, the very people who killed his father, adapt to an ever encroaching world threatening to destroy them. Mr. Saint had his faith, courage and his stamina tested to the limit several times in the book and kept me turning page after page. He has an insight into the Waodani that literally no one else could have since he was raised with them from a young boy and they see him as family. The fate of the Waodani tribe hangs in the balance as he struggles to help them into, if not the 21st century, at least the 20th century. The writing style is different in that Mr. Saint jumps back and forth from present to past and sideways but it all works. I gave this book 5 stars and if you look at my reviews I don't often do that.

Steve wrote a fantastic, informative, insightful version of an already inspiring story. Sometimes I would think, "Do I really need to know all these itty-bitty details?" Yes, they are important to appreciate the complexity of problems or the humor of the moment. The best aspect of Steve's writing is that he's honest and unpretentious. He doesn't try to impress you with his literary skills, but stays focused on the mission of the book, sharing his experiences and struggles. Anthropologists with umpteen initials behind their names should humble themselves to learn from this book. It's not a book about the white imperialist spreading his religion, but about a committed Christian trying to give his extended family and community skills they need to survive.

This is a story almost too hard to beleive that it is true.Steve Saint is the son of martyred missionary Nate Saint who was killed by Waodani Warriors this book is about forgiveness and a love that is unexplainable if it wasn't for Christ.I got this book under collectible from I-TEC. Here is a ministry that Steve Saint founded it is the Indigenous People's Technology and Education Center. The copy I ordered was brand new it had two stickers in it one for Maverick the flying car the other for I-TEC it is also signed by Steve Saint along with Mincaye's one of the warriors who killed Nate Saint thumbprint in it also. This book will be a great blessing to you Thank you for taking time to read this review.Go to www.i-tecusa.org for more information on what they are trying to do.

This full story of how Steve Saint , and his aunt Rachel Saint, became a part of the Waoduani Indian tribe after the 5 missionaries were killed in the 1950s gives a clear account of how the Indians felt, who was accountable for spearings and how Rachel, Nate Saint's sister was allowed to live with them and translate the Bible into their language, bringing many to a knowledge of living for God instead of killing. Included is Steve's family who lived with the Waorani after Rachel's death in order to help them face the outside world and grow in their Christian life..

Our Daughter read this at age 11 when she was called to missions. Nate and Steve Saint have greatly influenced her. The original copy was lost in our moves and so I bought this for her for Christmas as she is about to embark on her life's next great mission and adventure. I read this to all of our children.

On a Sunbeam, by Tillie Walden

From School Library Journal

Gr 7 Up-Walden's meditative space epic will easily win the hearts of sci-fi and romance fans. Mia is the latest addition to a team of restorers, who are tasked with repairing abandoned structures across the galaxy. Though each member of the tight-knit crew is harboring a complicated past, it is wistful Mia who proves to be the linchpin of the plot. Walden treats readers to a stunning interpretation of interstellar life; fluid, fish-shaped ships, floating cathedral-like ruins, and giant celestial creatures add to the grandeur of the story, as do the enormously meaningful friendships and romances among the cast of women and nonbinary characters. The narrative is split into two time lines: one set in the present, colored in berry tones with swatches of orange and red, that follows Mia and the restoration crew; and one five years earlier, done in black, white, and shades of gray blue, where Mia, then a freshman at a boarding school, develops a swoon-worthy romance with new classmate Grace. Walden depicts them with warmth, often dedicating an entire wordless page to their embrace. The artwork, from expansive landscapes to cozy glimpses of the shipmates snuggled together watching TV, is a sight to behold. VERDICT Bound to be a sci-fi favorite, especially for teens who also appreciated Nina LaCour's We Are Okay.-Della Farrell, School Library Journalα(c) Copyright 2011. "Walden creates the intoxicating effect of a universe as mysterious as our real one." ―The Atlantic“Phenomenal . . . Utterly mesmerizing . . . A remarkable, stunning comic.” ―Booklist, starred review“This masterful blend of science fiction–inflected school drama, road trip, and adventure is nothing less than marvelous.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review"A stunning interpretation of interstellar life . . . Bound to be a sci-fi favorite, especially for teens who also appreciated Nina LaCour’s We Are Okay." --School Library Journal, starred review“Both gently romantic and heartbreaking, the story ultimately celebrates love and the importance of chosen family. An affirming love story.” ―Kirkus“Watching Mia and Grace rekindle their love against the backdrop of a bleak, mystifying universe is deeply satisfying.” ―The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books“[A] pageturning and profoundly moving read.” ―Horn Book“Tillie Walden is the future of comics, and On a Sunbeam is her best work yet. It’s a ‘space' story unlike any you’ve ever read, with a rich, lived-in universe of complex characters.” –Brian K. Vaughan, Saga series and Paper Girls“On a Sunbeam is a rare treat. It’s both a slow-burn romance and a found-family space opera adventure with an engaging cast of characters. But it’s the world building that really stands out, with a blend of SF and fantasy in a gloriously strange setting that is so brilliantly original I have no idea how to describe it. I enjoyed every bit of it.” ―Martha Wells, author of The Murderbot Diaries and The Books of the Raksura“Enthralling, beautiful, and compelling. I couldn't put this down.” ―Ann Leckie, author of Ancillary Justice“On A Sunbeam strikes a magical balance between trippy and tangible, heartbreaking and hilarious. It was so easy to curl up in the art and lose myself in the story.” –Becky Chambers, author of The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet

Set against the backdrop of space, On a Sunbeam is a story about love, growing up and the power and importance of being part of a family – either a found family or blood relations – that supports you.The tale opens with Mia joining the crew of a spaceship that repairs and renovates damaged structures floating in space, before flashing back five years to her time at an elite boarding school. These two sub-plots are interconnected in some very interesting ways, mostly because of new-girl-at-school Grace, who Mia meets and befriends when both land in detention on the first day. To say much more than that would spoil this inventive and wonderfully told tale. The art illustrating this story is beautiful, at times surreal and whimsical – those floating buildings, spaceships that look like fish, and no male characters, for example – but the emotions and actions of the characters are clear and compelling. While the story would be still be great told as a prose novel, the accompanying artwork adds so much to the reader's emotional attachment to the story and characters – the hallmark of a great graphic novel or comic. And On a Sunbeam is, in my opinion, truly great.

I had read some of OAS in its original webcomic form, as well as one of Walden's other works (The End of Summer). I find t hard to focus on webcomics, so when it was announced that this would be released in print, I knew I had to buy it. I just finished it today. It's bittersweet- it is an absolutely unique book. Nothing I've read or watched feels quite the same. Fans of Firefly or Cowboy Bebon will appreciate the science fiction "found family in space" thing this book has going on. Miyazaki fans will love the art- it's beautiful and dynamic, almost like a combination of Miyazaki's animated movies and Bill Waterson's scifi landscapes from Calvin and Hobbes. The cast is diverse and unique, and each is engaging in their own way. The story develops very well- little bits of information revealed early on come around to be vitally important by the end, yet the conclusion is nothing I would have seen coming. The story is well-suited to the graphic nove format, and the quality of the book itself is very high. I know this will be one of the best books I've read all year. The only thing that is upsetting is that I know I'll probably never read anything quite like this again.

This comic began as a webcomic that was so large the pages took forever to load and I never had the patience to get to the end. Now it has arrived in paper form and it is otherworldly and beautiful! It's a dream like exploration of planets long abandoned and now being restored by a team of interesting people one of whom is nonbinary. It explores longing and nostalgia from a teenagers perspective, queer relationships and building friendships when you feel all alone. It's amazing and beautiful and definitely worth the money! 10/10 would recommend.

Such a beautiful story! Bright, creative images with relatable characters and realistic dialogue. I was immediately thrown into this story and couldn’t get myself out! I love how it has some mystical beings but doesn't go over the top, which makes it seem so much more truthful. Highly, highly recommend!

I binged this in almost one sitting. I don't usually read graphic novels, but a friend recommended it so I bought it and I was so not disappointed. Read. This. Book. The world is beautiful and imaginative and the characters are real and kick-ass. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up! :)

This began as an amazing web comic that was both beautiful and transfixing. I'm so thrilled that the artist and First Second gave this such a wonderful treatment on paper. Super unique, super beautiful. Completely wonderful.

As soon as the color started seeping into the pages, so did I. Perfectly composed panels. They care but don’t care about gender. Honest, intimate, equal romance between impressive characters. Beautifully crafted vision of simple, habitable space.Above all, a story deserving to be seen.

Beautiful art, beautiful story.A graphic novel to satisfy your queer space opera dreams.

I am fairly new to gardening but I am an avid researcher. I stumbled onto Doug's website early in my researching garden topics and have used his site as a go to place to answer perplexing gardening questions for the past 2 years. One thing I haven't had the guts to do is start a compost project. I have done research on it but I have had a little trouble staying on task with my reading. But this book "Compost" was really helpful to me. I need EVERYTHING spelled out because I just don't have enough experience to infer (sometimes important) details from text. Doug's writing style is straightforward and doesn't assume anything. I got the basics I need. Love the explanations too (being a research oriented type). I do agree with another reviewer that the layout is a bit rough, but aside from that, the content (and that's what I bought the book for) is excellent. Thanks for your help. I think I will finally take the plunge into compost. (E[...] a gross image! ;-)Buy this book if you have ANY interest in composting!

Let me preface my review by saying I'm not an expert writer or book publisher, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express recently. The subject material in this ebook I found was informative and helpful. The idea of a Q&A format works with this topic. However, some changes would have greatly improved the work. My critique is based on two things: table of contents and the length of the book. I found my self flipping through page after page to see what the next question was, which became a bit annoying. A table of contents should show the topic of each chapter in a Q&A format. That way a reader could quickly scan the TOC and select those Q&As they want to read first.Secondly,I think the ebook would have worked better if the content was consolidated into fewer pages. Having some 65 pages of material to go through seems excessive. Questions with a short answers can be combined into a single page without over half the page left blank. The idea of a view a book on a computer screen or reader is to present the material as full as possible. Additional photos perhaps would give the reader more visual knowledge and appreciation for what compost is - garden gold.I mean these suggestions as constructive criticism for future publications.

This is the first work on composting I have read that presented the subject in a clear, easy to understand way. I now understand the difference between the cold and hot methods of composting. I have tried composting before but with limited success. Hopefully, with the information in Mr. Green's book, I can be more successful this time around.

All of Doug Green's books are excellent.Doug does not wordy but is to the point and very honest with his own experience and knowledge. He often presents other ideas and is open to other ideas, but is confident in his own knowledge as well.I consider Doug my garden mentor. I have all his books.

I found the information in this book to be very user friendly. It was a very quick read without being too technical. I would recommend this book for the novice who wants to begin composting and approaches gardening from a more relaxed perspective.

Simple to the point explanation of what composting is, and how to do itAn easy read with excellent Q's and A's at the end.

Douglas Green's "Compost" is a must-read for any gardener interested in getting started in composting. The book is wonderfully organized -- each chapter answers a question about composting, so it's easy to find the exact information you're looking for. Green's encouraging, straight-forward style comes through on each and every page. I also love that he freely admits to following low-maintenance composting methods in his own garden, and reminds us that there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with that. My kind of gardener! Highly recommended.

This is a quick and easy book on the fundamentals of composting. It answered all my questions and provided many tips on doing it right.
