Not too easy, not too impossible. I can struggle through most of these without checking the back. These puzzles do not assume that I live in New York, or that I watch TV constantly, so that a good vocabulary and a fair grasp of "general knowledge" gets me through in about 20 minutes. A very comfortable set of puzzles.I swore off the ones edited by Will Shortz and John Samson because they will frequently cross some celebrity I never heard of with another of the same, and there is no way of guessing your way through them. Insider games! Did not like them!

These are truly some of the best cross word puzzles around. They are challenging without being frustrating yet don't make things easy by any means. If you have done a USA Today Crossword puzzle before you know what you are getting, so you can buy this knowing they the same ones. The paper quality is decent but you do have to press pretty hard if using a pencil as it is the coarse recycled paper, be brave and go with a pen.My only issue with this is the layout. The questions are on one side and the puzzle on the other. Anyone that has held a book knows that it can be a challenge to keep it open and in the case of a crossword puzzle it is a real challenge to look back and forth and try to write down your answer. I would love this book if it was printed on larger pages and everything was on one page. This is a challenge to do in bed.Overall, great puzzles and a good buy for the price.

I always find USA Today crossword puzzles solvable without having to know a lot of proper names of people in sports, movies, or the media. Others' crossword puzzles frustrate me to no end. These are NOT "easy" like the books found in drug or variety stores. They are just challenging enough to make doing one a day a pleasure.

Maddening!!! I subscribe to USA Today so I have probably done all these crosswords in the past. I usually can finish them in 15 or 20 minutes each day. Just enough difficulty to get the brain working. HOWEVER, I do not understand why someone thought it was necessary to make theseinto 2- page puzzles. It is hard to hang onto the book and keep both pages available - - and write the answers. Even if it had to be a little larger, it is MUCH easier to just have a single page. Sometimes I just like to tear out the single page and put it on a clipboard.

I'm a bit of a crossword newbie. I'd finished a slim book of easy puzzles and, because of this; I felt emboldened to get another book of Crossword puzzles. Within a few puzzles, I realized that i might have bit off more than I could chew. Puzzles are boring if they're too easy, but these are a bit much for me. I'm not giving up, and I'm sure they're fine crossword puzzles, but i would love to do one of this books puzzles without having to look up an answer on my phone (because a certain person, place or thing I've never heard of is part of a clue) or in the back of this book. I'm not slogging this book, I just should have done a little more research and looked more specifically for a book of slightly easier crossword puzzles. Though,on a positive note, the challenge level of this books puzzles has improved my crossword skills; just not at the rate I didn't realize I'd hoped.

I've been searching high and low for the challenging crossword puzzle book series we have at work but it seems to be out of print or something because I can't find it anywhere. Based on the description I knew this wasn't it, but it read like it's a big puzzle. Instead they're rather small with high obsolete clues. I dont mind challenging, but there's a difference between challenging and obsolete silly clues. Some of the answers literally dont even mean what the clue is- seriously. Once you're done a puzzle, look up some of the words you think dont quite fit but are the correct solution. They made up or severely twisted the meanings.At least they pass the time, I guess.

I really like this publication. The puzzles are not too easy, and not too difficult.The last puzzle book I bought (at a drugstore) was so easy that I finally gave it away. The one before that contained Sunday crosswords that had so many arcane references in them it drove me crazy.I feel like baby bear; this one is just right.

We loved the first two books in this series - the puzzles are actually solvable for us and the pages were of high quality, heavy paper where you could erase letters without damaging the paper. But this book uses newspaper quality paper which is really hard to erase letters and it just feels sand-papery. Very disappointed especially after the quality of the first two books.

Any time a book is written on the subject of religion, controversy is bound to ensue. Extend the subject to religious extremism and/or fundamentalism and you can ratchet it up a notch. When the book is written by a "non-believer", you can bet that it will come under vicious attack by proponents of the religion in question. Such is the case with Under the Banner of Heaven, Jon Krakauer's expose on Mormonism and Mormon fundamentalism.I read Krakauer's Into Thin Air and was riveted by his writing on the subject of Mt. Everest. I would not place this work in that category, but found it be a very instructive primer on the origins and background of the Mormon religion and its various fundamentalist offshoots.The book essentially tells two stories, the threads of which alternate throughout the book. In one thread, Krakauer tells the story of Joseph Smith, the founding of the Mormon religion and its evolution to the present day. In the other thread, he explores the various fundamentalist offshoots of Mormonism through the prism of a vicious double murder committed by a pair of its proponents.It is difficult to argue with most of the facts presented in relation to the founding and evolution of Mormonism. As Krakauer points out, it is a religion of such recent vintage that the historical record is quite clear. He does make a few assumptions and extensions which have earned him the ire of the official church. In those cases, however, he states his grounds for doing so quite well. It is doubtful that anyone except a true believer in Mormonism would ever write a history to the liking of the church.The beliefs and practices of some of the fundamentalists profiled in the book are scary in their level of extremism, however, they take their beliefs directly from the pages of Joseph Smith, the founder of the religion. Polygamy, or plural marriage, was one of the chief tenets of his church, and one that was stubbornly clung to for many years by the leaders of the church. It can hardly be argued that many heinous instances of statutory rape and sexual child abuse have resulted and continue to occur.While Mormonism has come under attack throughout its history, both for some of its practices and the highly dubious circumstances surrounding its founding (Joseph Smith was likely no more than a charlatan and a fraud who concocted a religion that guaranteed him access to a never ending cache of nubile virgins), very few of the world's religions have better legs to stand on. Old Testament Christianity is filled with barbarous practices and outlandish fables (Noah's Ark, parting the Red Sea, burning bushes). Islam, ditto. I'm not even going to mention Scientology.So, before anyone tears off on a rant concerning Mormonism, just make sure your own house is in order. If you want a quick and dirty outline on Mormon beliefs and foundations, this is a good place to start. If you want a good example of the effects of extremism (not limited to Mormonism) this is also a good example.

A friend recommended this book as a horror story. We are both fans of Jon Krakauer and he has a lot of credibility with both of us. Jon does a fair and factual history of the Mormon church and the rise of polygamy and the FLDS. While the Mormon church has denounced polygamy and the FDLS, this sect continues to thrive in Arizona, Texas, Mexico, Canada and they are now moving into South Dakota. In addition to the background and history, Krakauer zeroes in on several stories of individuals within the church, their exploitation and their escapes. He doesn't sensationalize the stories but uses the stories to explain the impact of the absolute control the FLDS prophets have over all the inhabitants in these FDLS communities where they make their own laws and take advantage of federal and state social programs even while they openly distain the government. Why a horror story? The people in these communities are emotionally, physically and sexually abused. Men of 40 and 50 take "brides" who are 12 and 13 years old. Their parents willingly give them over to these prophets thinking it will assure them a place in heaven. These people think this is normal and the rest of society is heathen. It is an alternative universe, but it goes on here in the US.

For me the book is 'a page turner' for i could not put it down following the first ten pages. Learning of the development of the LDS faith through Joseph and his followers is clearly explained and w/out prejudice. The information regarding FLDS families enables one to understand the evolution of plural marriages, [which are deplorable --- my personal opinion]. Had no idea why the book was purchased, other than having previously read one of his books. Great writer! Will purchase more of his books.

Before you buy, be aware that the author is an atheist. There is a constant subtle belittling of any type of belief in God, you get the feeling that he finds faith ridiculous & something for unintelligent people.There are some very interesting historical tidbits about the LDS church & its beginnings that I did not find in other books (I've read about 20). Some of the footnotes are fascinating. It is more about Mormon history & how the violence & control developed than about the one incident of murder in 1984 that is referred to on the cover.

LIke the author, most of admire the way the Mormon religion generally has a very healthy family oriented approach to life. The idea of golden tablets that are lost (of course) and an angel with a language only the founder can understand (of course) and some of the hypocrisy of the revelations are just part of the basis of most religions. After all they are faith based not fact based. It was a good over view of the beginnings of the LDS Church and the real perils of polygamy when it is mixed with religious authority abuse. All in all it is a good read.

An excellent, thought-provoking dose of realism. Loved the audio book as it is read by the actual author. This story speaks to many who are disgusted with the hypocrisy and violence often associated with religious fundamentalism. Very well organized, well-written, and a pleasure to absorb. Highly recommended.

I have nothing but good things to say about Judy Cornish. Judy has found a compassionate way to help Dementia sufferers to live with dignity and independence. She studies to have the latest information and understanding of dementia and how it should be handled. I hope that this helps more people find out about her methods for helping those living with dementia and Alzheimer's.

Incredibly helpful for anyone who has a parent or spouse suffering from dementia or other related malady. This is a great guide and helps get one through all the incredibly difficult times.

This book was a fast read. It has a great explanation of how the dementia brain works and strategies for helping an aging loved one with dementia age in place at home. It has suggestions for interacting, facilitating social inclusion and recreation, and ensuring safety and feelings of security. I’m so glad I found this book and will be telling everyone about it. I take care of my grandma, and I will be getting it for all of her ‘helpers.’

I have raised children - both with learning disabilities that needed to be addressed early on in childhood. I now have a spouse who, after many years as a successful businessman, has developed his own sense of reality. This book has helped me know that I cannot re-parent this person who has meant so much to me for so many years, and has refocused me so that living with my husband is no longer such a frightening journey.

An "excellent read" for those who have loved ones on the dememtia road. Very enlightening, thorough explanation of each phase and what to expect. Full of ways to approach each phase with real examples. I am finding they really do work. It is all about accepting the person as they are now and how to help both the the caregiver and the individual with dementia embrace life.

I really enjoyed the examples and the process for providing care with kindness and detail into planning each individuals program for care. This is a great book for families starting the process of caring for an elderly relative with dementia issues.

As the 200th anniversary of the Napoleonic Wars rolls through, veteran British historian Andrew Field offers a different point of view on its most decisive battle with "Waterloo: The French Perspective". Fields has mined a variety of French sources (and some British sources) to give the view from the other side of the hill, or in this case, of the ridge at Mount St. Jean.Fields proceeds in a methodical manner through the Waterloo Campaign, from Napoleon's return from Elba and the rebuilding of the French Army, through the preliminary battles prior to Waterloo, to the actual battle itself and the aftermath. The narrative is straightforward, stepping easily from source to source with some connecting explanations. The book includes some excellent graphics of the actual maneuvering of French arms on the battlefield at Waterloo. In his discussion, Fields gives full credit to the Prussians for their aggressive effort to reach the battlefield, and their impact on Wellington's and Napoleon's management of their respective forces."Waterloo: The French Perspective" is short enough to be worthwhile to the general reader with at least some knowledge of the battle, as a corrective to generally British-centric histories of the campaign. For the student of the Napoleonic Wars, the principal interest may be the use of the French perspective as a re-entrant to some of the battle's lingering controversies, including the struggle for the farmhouse of Hougemount and the various phases of the battle. This reviewer found most interesting the author's placement of the crisis of the battle at the fall of La Haye Sainte rather than at the attack of Napoleon's Middle and Old Guard. So far as this reviewer can tell, there are no major discoveries of new material; no controversies will be definitively settled by the book. However, students of the campaign should find the perspective to be food for thought; it is recommended to that audience.

This book can be a terrific introduction to the Battle of Waterloo, but you’ll really, really appreciate the author’s presentation of rare sources and his balanced analysis if you’ve read a multitude of other books on this pivotal battle. The author relies on various French accounts of Waterloo (many of them unpublished or otherwise inaccessible), and many corroborating Allied accounts are used as well. Some accounts are exceptionally vivid – such the ones describing the Old Guard’s recapture of Plancenoit or the retreat of the French Army. Other accounts, such as the ones covering the work of Napoleon’s staff or even more casual things, are also very intriguing.Field takes a stab at numerous myths and misconceptions surrounding the Battle of Waterloo, and the decision-making process and actions of the French Army are analyzed without the hindsight bias. After all, the French were operating under imperfect information, in an unfamiliar terrain (at least unfamiliar to many officers and rank-and-file soldiers), and with an imperfect communication system. At the same time, the author attributes the French loss to various strategic and tactical failures of its leadership, and I think it’s a fair conclusion.The book sheds a lot of light on the following issues / questions, with many of them ignored or distorted in the voluminous Waterloo literature:- Realistically, how early could the French commence the battle, given the ground conditions and the initial disposition? Was the start of the battle deliberately delayed?- What was the initial disposition of the Grand Battery and how was it moved throughout the day? How effective was the French artillery during different stages of the battle?- What French units were engaged in the attack on Hougoumont? Was there more than one incursion into Hougoumont’s courtyard? How wisely was Reille’s Corps used during the battle? Were some of its units idle?- What explains the column formation employed during the attack of d’Erlon’s Corp? How did this attack proceed? Was there an earlier opportunity to capture La Haye Sainte or some of the Allied batteries? What really stopped d’Erlon’s attack? What role did hedges play?- Was the Grand Cavalry Attack really unsupported by the artillery and infantry? Why was this support ineffective?- Were some of the Allied squares shaken / broken during the Grand Cavalry Attack?- What was the disposition / role played by the Marines and Sappers of the Guard?- What was the true role played by the sunken lane? Was it just another Napoleonic myth or a real constraint for the French cavalry and infantry? What was it significance during the retreat of the French Army?- How did the Middle Guard’s attack proceed? How was it supported by the rest of the French Army? Were there additional means to support this attack? How effective was the Middle Guard’s fire?- How did the French respond to the arrival of Zieten’s Corps? How did they try to counter it?- Finally, did the French Army have a chance to win this battle or avoid its own disintegration?My only critical comment is that the author underestimates the numerical strength of the Prussian units actually engaged at Waterloo. Pirch’s Corps also made a major contribution. While this Prussian Corps in not mentioned in the book, it appears on one of the maps, but I think it is mislabeled anyways and should be Zieten’s Corps instead.Overall, a magnificent book! Buy it, read it, spread the word about it. It belongs on your bookshelf (or Kindle, I guess) next to “1815: Waterloo” by Henry Houssaye, “The Battle” by Alessandro Barbero, and “Three Napoleonic Battles” by Harold Parker.

Just in time for the 200th Anniversary of the decisive battle of the Napoleonic wars, Andrew Field, taps a variety of French sources to provide a probing recounting of the Battle of Waterloo. I understand why he doesn't use the French name for the battle as Waterloo in the title will sell more books than La Belle Alliance. The book gets off to a slow start with the explanations of the sources employed but once freed from establishing its historical credentials, the history is a cogent account of the battle. Field does not use this work to show how the French really won the battle or excuse genuinely bone-headed generalship. It is a refreshing book and already is one of my favorites about the battle. If you want something different then the old "fields of Eaton" history that relies almost exclusively on British sources, give this book a try.

Very interesting read which relies on French sources to describe the Battle of Waterloo and, where possible, unique uses both English & French sources to clarify critical moments in the battle. Field, to a large extent redresses the over- reliance on English sources and this particularly clarifies the last attack by the French Imperial Guard. He says that where there are German & French accounts of the same event they are largely in harmony, but sadly doesn't include them. One of the few MUST READS for the upcoming 200th anniversary of the battle.

I am absolutely in love with the Duino Elegies. The gravity in this poetry brings me home. I continue to return to these poems whenever I need to reconnect to my own beautiful, terrifying, internal infinity in all its glory.These aren't feel-good poems in any lighthearted sense; they feel good because they remind us we're not alone in feeling our weight, our mortality, our transience.We're lucky, in fact, to feel all those things. Even the angels envy us...

Great translation of one of the finest poets of the late 19th century and early 20th century. Outside of Germany and Europe, the great symbolist poet, who worked with Rodin while in Paris, is not read nearly enough in my view considering his immense talent and influence on later poets. The translator, like all who undertake the thankless task, takes chances but is rewarded by managing to bring Rilke's vivid images to light along with his subtle philosophical and often almost mystical spirit. No doubt one should always read a poet in the original language to capture nuances of sound and language, but if you do not read German (and the book offers the German original if you are curious), this is as a very successful translation of one of the great symbolist poets I have read, and includes most of his major poems, poetic prose, and the famous notebooks. If you have not read Rilke, and love poetry, you are in for a treat. I am on my second copy as it has been read so much. Perhaps time for the Kindle version, though poetry should be touched, I believe.

I've read other translated versions of Rilke's poems, but I keep coming back to Stephen Mitchell's interpretations. They are beautiful and really resonate in my heart. This collection is a dear friend of mine.

If you are on the precipice of purchasing this translation, you are probably moved along that path by the excellent reviews. I cannot add more than to say that I am so grateful to have had a chance to read the Rilke poetry in poetic English, which I am assured by the scholars is as close as one could imagine to what Rilke would have himself written in our language. To read him in this book of his poetry is enchanting and I find something wonderfully new each time through.

"Oh gather it, Angel, that small-flowered herb of healing,Create a vase and preserve it. Set it among the joysnot yet open to us; on that lovely urnpraise it with the ornately flowing inscription: "Subrisio Saltat."Rainier Maria Rilke surely was touched by an angel, and through his magnificent poems, so are we. Stephen Mitchell seems to have been touched also by these great spirits when he translated and interpreted almost 300 pages of Rilke's poems and other writings. This generous-hearted book includes selections from Rilke's major works: The Book of Hours; The Book of Pictures; New Poems; Requiem; Uncollected Poems (1913-1918); The Duimo Elegies; The Sonnets to Orpheus; Uncollected Poems (1923-1926);and The Notebooks of Malte Lauris Brigge (prose).Gloriously, all of the Elegies are given. ("Oh gather it, Angel" is from the Fifth Elegy, dedicated to Frau Hertha Koenig.) One can hardly read these, particularly the selections from the "Sonnets to Orpheus," suffused with Rilke's feelings associated with the too-early death of a young girl, without trembling.This book offers riches upon riches:--A wise, informative introductory essay, "Looking for Rilke," by Robert Hass--The poems themselves, in German and English on facing pages--45 pages of notes with many translations of Rilke's letters about the poems--a title & first line index in German and another title & first line index in EnglishThe poetry is of profound beauty in both languages. Some believe Rilke may have been the greatest of poets writing in German. Reading the poems aloud in German can help convey one aspect---the play of sound on/in the ear---even if we're not fluent in Rilke's first language. (Later, he wrote in French.) However, Mitchell's wonderful poems in English capture Rilke's voice, the complexity and humanity of his thoughts, and his amazing images. Mitchell gives us the cadence, the style (including Rilke's own changes over the years), and the darkness, angers, longings, questionings, depths & heights of Rilke's feelings.Reader alert: Could other translations be made? Sure, but perhaps not as true to the beauty and power of Rilke, so splendid is Mitchell's achievement. Yet this is a 1982 book, reprinted in 1989 by Vintage International. There are later translations and what some future poet/translator may achieve, who can say? In some places---a very few, in my opinion---perhaps the English word-net has not quite caught the nuances of Rilke's thought. Other reviewers might see more instances, still others none.A reminder too that these are selections from Rilke: parts, not the whole of his work. Some readers may find their favorites missing.For me, Stephen Mitchell's "The Selected Poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke" is a treasure almost beyond measure----and at used book prices, an outstanding value.Most highly recommended.
