Currently, as we sense the decline of the labor movement, the fraying of the social safety net, the widening of income gaps, the disappearance of the middle class and the rise of Tea Party and Libertarian philosophies, this woman and this era, (1890's through 1930's), offer interesting, pertinent and surprising insights and parallels. This work includes Emma Goldman's essays, and also addresses Emma Goldman's life and activities, and so it embraces as it must her thoughts and feelings, her formal and informal statements, and a complete range of her writings, speeches and public utterances. It is not a close parsing of the differences amongst the intellectuals on the finer points of Marxist theory, a topic that is probably of little interest much less application for today's reader, but it will inform your understanding of anarchy as a school of thought. The book does present a vibrant and fascinating picture of a woman who was of her time and yet well ahead of her time. It captures the political excitement and hysteria and ferment that marked the 1890'ss, and it calmly and clearly explains some of the main lines of thought that we now lump together under the vaguely misunderstood heading of "anarchism".There is much to think about here, and it is a pleasure to recapture and appreciate who Emma Goldman was and what she accomplished. This is a very nice Kindle find, and worth a look. The writing is crisp and feels very modern despite the book's age. While the author clearly admires Emma Goldman, this is no hagiography, and while the book is sympathetic to the anarchist cause it is not unreliable or exaggerated in its claims. It would seem that this would serve as a solid introduction and guide to the politics of this largely forgotten, or at least overlooked, period in U.S. history. That seems a solid basis for recommending this book to the interested reader.

This is NOT the original "Anarchism and Other Essays." Whoever put this together self-published it and it DOES NOT INCLUDE one essay, and the other essays are titled incorrectly.DO NOT BUY.

This particular book is a great introduction into Emma Goldman's world. It's definitely not an Anarchism 101 but the novice will be able to grasp Goldman's version of Anarcha-Feminism. Two things I should mention: 1.) It's cheap price is appealing and the reason for is printed on demand through Create Space. 2.) Because it's independently created its poorly proofread. Honestly not even sure the person the typed this actually read through his final product. A lot of typos. But if this doesn't bother you, then the cost savings is worth the loss.

What I've gleaned from this book, as far as I have gotten, is that we, as a civilization, have not progressed very much. Emma's disappointment with the citizenry of her age, that she describes, could and does apply to the citizenry of today. She sees what's swept under the rug, and it's what we've been seeing these days. History repeating itself.

The most important thing about these essays is that they are still directly relevant in a hundred years time. The anarchist and socialist Emma is a passionate critic of puritanical hypocrisy about sex, the abuse of women and the working men and of how those in power incite wars and use patriotism to hide it, or the cruelty of the prison system.Goldman's anarchism is consistent, perhaps almost to a fault. And it is impressive how very well she understood the value of freedom and every man's right to pursue his/her happiness. She lived in the period of self-righteous greed and militarism that was the late Gilded Age and one of the most relevant times of history to understand "what went wrong" with corporativism and mixed economic policies the following century. These essays are a series of criticisms of power in its religious, political, military, corporativist, and legal forms.I truly enjoyed reading her tenacity of thought and I admire the fact that in many ways she was the first in the United States to fight for ideas which are still important today. A must read.

Just because it's old, doesn't devalue it. Emma wrote in readable English. By that, I mean she didn't have the annoying and iconic high diction of many authors of her time (compare to Ambrose Bierce). You aren't supposed to just agree with the whole book and all the ideas because anarchism is always changing, adapting, and new threats are added all the time. Emma probably could never have conceived of what the modern State has become - so don't use this as a handbook, and FFS, don't use this and become an armchair politician, or worse, an armchair insurrectionist. Please. There's enough. Just use Emma's work to open your mind to some new yet old ideas during the golden age of Anarchist theory.

Book came extremely damaged. Pages ripped, bent, etc. Cover was creased and torn. Spine was also very damaged and peeling. Also not a 1st edition anything: simply a forgotten school copy of a wonderful book; so damaged it look like it was recovered from a trash can. I intended this for a gift and had to go buy something else!

This book is an eye opener"SPOILER"Especially her explanation of the American prison system in the 1920, where she explains that the prisoners were taught skills displacing women from the workforce when they exited prison, this lead to them having very poor salaries (back then women were paid much less). This lead to the working class hating the prisoners because their salaries were decreased (displaced wifes) and it made the x prisoners continue to commit crimes. As a result the privately owned prisons were guaranteed to get cheap force labor back. And the working class waited all it's energy hating the disenfranchised instead of the ruling elite... Now 100 years later America has more prisoners pr capita than any other country, so obviously this successful business strategy has been expanded quite substantially

Curious and not knowing what to expect, this book was my introduction to the Yoruba religion, "the science of allowing God to flow through you, so that each breath becomes a prayer, and as God breathes, you breathe." I have only read Part I: A Yoruba Vision of God & Life, yet I can say for certain that this book is an answer to my heart's prayer. The book is well written and the Author's voice is so clear, it is as if she is in conversation with you. As the chapters unfold, questions are raised and answers are provided leaving the reader with a cellular level understanding of God's plan for our lives. Some of the concepts have been appropriated by newer religions and sciences so it is wonderful to read the traditional teachings in their pure form, minus the disparaging fictional Hollywood fantasy of Africa or complete white washing that many religions require. If you've ever felt that Buddhism, syncretized Catholicism, the Black Pentecostal or white American churches were missing something, some intangible "thing," this book will help you name it, and I suspect upon completion, it will help you move past it. The author, "titled this book Finding Soul on the Path of Orisa, and the word 'finding' is important and intentional. It implies that the soul, our deep spiritual center, is always present. We need only turn inward to draw on its power during our journey of struggle and transformation."

Where do I begin with this book? I loved it so much from beginning to end. So many books on Lucumi/Ifa/Orishas focus on the specifics of each orisha and their characteristics, addimus, rituals, colors, etc, but this book focuses more on the core, meat and essence of what African spirituality is truly all about. Reread the title of the book outloud a few times, as it really captures what her book is about. Her breakdown of finding your SOUL path was done artistically and beautifully. You will see the spiritual realm you live and the journey you are embarking on very different after reading this book. Very few books I would want to read more than once, but this one is one I can read again and again! Correal, you have a gift with words. Adupe for this special creation!

I wasn’t sure why I was buying Finding Soul on the Path of Orisa: A West African Spiritual Tradition by Tobe Melora Correal since I don’t work with much from Yoruba religion, but am very grateful I did. Somehow, in trying to balance the out the dangerous misconception that all the MoreWorlders (Deities, ancestors, Nature, “spirits,” etc) are safe and want to help, I stopped remembering the loving part of the MoreWorld. Especially when I read about Vodou, Santeria, hoodoo, and all the other African Diaspora religions which are filled with warnings that the Gods are real, you better follow thru, and this is not a game. Those are very important messages for all MoreWorlder workers. Many Neopagans who don’t understand that need books about Santeria warning them. Those of us who are hard polytheists tend to already know (the hard way?) that the MoreWorlders are real, we better not break oaths to them, and it is the fabric of your life.New Orleans Voodoo and Southern US hoodoo is usually judged by one thing: Does it work? There is no Priesthood and the books tend to focus on spells and workings. Worship doesn’t come into play, unless Christian. Cuban Santeria (Yoruba) and Haitian Vodou (mainly Dahomey) are much more closely linked to different African ways and thus have rules, hierarchy, initiations, and long ceremonies of worship.Reading a book about the spiritual growth and love within one West African tradition, orisa from the Yoruba people in southern Nigeria, some of whom still worship the orisa the way they have for possibly 10,000 years, inspired me to remember why we usually come to any religion: love. Central to a healthy religion is love, a sense of being loved, and a greater capacity to love which comes with wisdom, humbling experiences and greater understanding of What Is Going On.Yoruba is monotheistic, but with some twists. God is not the Creator. God is also unknowable because God is such a massively huge Source of All. Like Allah with no face, humans cannot know God. God is named Olorun in Yoruba but no one prays to Olorun. Olorun is beyond our comprehension. From Olorun, the Source, all that is has ashe (ah-shay is how Luisha Teish taught me to pronounce it). Ashe is the medicinal, powerful, creative and destructive, magical force that takes various shapes in humans, animals, plants, rivers, soil, mountains, drums, fire and the orisha, but that’s getting ahead of myself. Suffice it to say that as we animists know, all that is lives with same beautiful power of the Source as anything else.Olorun I see as Nature. Nature was here at the Big Bang and will be here long after all life is gone from this planet. Nature is unknowable. We are Nature, everything is Nature, so how can we know something within we are immersed? Nature is impersonal like Olorun. We don’t try to prey to “Nature” because Nature is so far beyond us and yet everywhere.Olorun has a child, also transgendered/ no gendered/ beyond gender, who is the Creator Olodumare. Olodumare organizes Earthly things. I see Olodumare as the laws of nature. Gravity, Earth as a closed ecosystem, velocity, chemicals, etc. It was hard for me at first to wrap my mind around the fact that God/Source is not the Creator just because of my culture. From Olodumare we have the 44 orishas, gods and goddesses filled with ashe from Olorun, given purpose via Olodumare. The orisha are forces of nature, creative and destructive. Each of them has a side that builds up and a side that tears down. Morality such as good and evil don’t apply. This matches a lot of polytheist thought. Gods have to do what they have to do because they are bound by the same laws of nature everything else is. If there is Global Warming, the storm Gods have to make hurricanes. If there is fracking, there Earthquake Gods have to cause Earthquakes. Sometimes we can briefly make deals with the MoreWorlders for personal safety, but we cannot change the natural order of things even if they hurt us.The ashe in everything and Olorun the Source of All being so unknowable connects me to monism, not monotheism. For me Olorun is like Brahman in this one aspect. That another god (lower case g) organized everything is a logical concept, one I read about in some Native American myths. Olorun needs edges, separateness for there to be persons (human and otherwise) with ashe. Ashe is the power in food, medicine, magic, places, etc. Ashe (and thus God the Unknowable Source) is everywhere, so everyone and everything must be treated as sacred. Including ourselves, so self destructive patterns are against God, against our own ashe. All of us are reborn into our families which can be confusing for those used to the Western version of Hindu reincarnation. Like the ancestral reincarnation of the Siberian Yukaghirs in the book Soul Hunters, a person is both who they are and the ancestor. In Yoruba the ancestor also stays an ancestor, as honoring of the dead is a corner stone of the cosmology. No one is an individual; everyone is their family, here with gifts to help the family and thus tribe. In many Native American cultures, when you meet someone you ask “Who are your people?” ie your family. This seems rather common with indigenous religion. Iron Age Indo-European Pagans took genealogy very seriously. Druids memorized epic lists of tribal names while the Norse appear to have included honoring ancestors as mandatory. The beginning of the Old Testament is the Jewish ancestral tree.(In our culture, this wouldn’t be that helpful as we rarely have much in common, including where we live, values and lifeways, with our grandparents, parents or siblings. Since most Americans are tribeless, rootless mutts (even if you are all German, you are from different Teutonic tribes), knowing what ancestor is in someone may be impossible. I don’t know how one works with that.)A great deal of the book is about working with the egun, your ancestral dead. I can say that after over a decade of doing some hard ancestor work, what she says is on the nose. It can take years of digging through ancestral issues before you really sense that your ancestors, the spirits closest to you, who love you the most, are helpful. There is so much intergenerational trauma combined with the fact that few us ever spent much time with our extended families, our ancestors often start out as strangers who passed on alcoholism, PTSD, racism, fear of God (any sort), and power struggles which today influence us in ways that often lead to extensive therapy. The author actually makes sure to state a few times if when doing ancestor work, you become so upset about the trauma to see a decent therapist. It’s hard to work with a spirit you only knew as the “bitch who beat” your father. As we heal our own ancestral baggage, our ancestors heal. As they heal, they want to help us more. Many have a different perspective dead than alive and want to make up for their wrongs. Very few of us know much genealogy, so while we try to keep the names alive, we can also honor the ancestors by listing their home nations, occupations, or just the ancestors. Ancestral work is the backbone to Yoruba but it’s very neglected in most books because it is so personal. The author suggests spending time daily with the ancestors. I feed mine weekly and some weeks it’s nonstop crying as they tell me things I didn’t know about my family. Both sides of my family are very mysterious, trying to forget recent deaths and how those deaths impacted the families. But the more ancestors I know personally, the more there is to do. Well, not do, but time involved listening and being sick, I’m fatigued. But no one else in my family is working with our dead so it all goes to me. The author calls it tending the ancestral garden. Lots of pulling out trash, nurturing shoots, watering, pruning, ahgh, it’s work. In a traditional Yoruba (and many other cultures) family everyone would do this and everyone before them would have done this as well. Like animism having to catch up to GMOs, nuclear waste and Climate Chaos, modern ancestor tenders may have a ton of work to do if the ancestral garden has been neglected for a few or more generations. The author explains why this is well worth the time. The ancestors will help you with problems that gods may not. With them, it’s personal. If you did not have a family that was supportive, nurturing and protective, it may be hard to believe that the people who can be the most supportive, nurturing and protective are your own ancestors. They have flaws, yes. But they can provide you with the connectedness many Americans lack, the feeling of security from a large extended loving family. The end of the book briefly touches on the effects of the three initiations and how to choose a Godparent. Elders in Yoruba and Cuba have to have been initiates for 25 years because it’s much more than knowing what herbs with which to wash someone’s head and what order the drummers play. Experience and wisdom of age is important. However in the US some people are considered elders after only ten years. If they are old in age, they may be able to pull it off, but if they are young or middle aged adults, she writes to be very careful. They don’t have the wisdom of life to be able to guide others. She realistically explains the new spiritual family as being as dysfunctional as any other, driving home that if you want a lace of people all like your spiritual dreams, it doesn’t exist. (Everyone should know this about covens, kindreds, ashrams, sangras, groves, churches, etc.)She writes very little about the orisa themselves because there are so many books on Yemaya, Ogun, Chango, Oya, Oshun, etc. No ceremonies are given as those are only for initiates. What she mainly focuses on is the private spiritual inner work that must be done or the rituals are hollow. She also shifts Yoruba religion from fear based to God based, which is its original African form. I read some of the orisa books today and am like “Why would anyone worship such awful monsters who treat people terribly?” I think I understand what happened. Yoruba was a wealthy powerful nation. Those in Cuba and Brazil were slaves to other wealthy powerful nations. The dangers and rage in the orisha of Santeria and orixa in Brazil come from living powerless in terror of death. It became about survival for an oppressed people facing cultural genocide and personal murder, not a peaceful family religion practiced by everyone. Survival makes you more aware of evil. The orishas and orixas reflect that. This is still part of their constant need to destroy and create, just in much harder times.None of my interpretations are meant to reflect what the author meant BTW. I finally got a way to connect Yoruba cosmology with something I personally understand. I highly recommend this for anyone interested in the loving side of Yoruba and its original African form and/or for people working with ancestors who are feeling frustrated, repulsed, or filled with grief.

I really enjoyed this book - after finding out my ancestors were most likely from the Ivory Coast / Ghana (DNA testing) I began researching the paths of religion from that area. I was drawn to this book by recommendations from knowledgeable friends, and was not disappointed. I’ve learned a lot and feel more ready to continue my personal journey. Well worth the read - but more than that - take action after reading it!

Of the Lucumi books that I purchased this is one of the most earnest and inspiring. I feel that Tobe started where I started, as a total outsider who nonetheless recognized the hidden treasure and potentiality of the Yoruba faith and Yoruba-based faiths. Often times, (in my narrow experience) when you meet people who share those beliefs, you dont get a feel that they spent time in reflection and spiritual growth. They are all talk of rituals and maintaining the traditional practices they were taught from similar minded folks. You can be in this religion and be a seeker of knowledge, a trailblazer, a higher thinking mover and shaker. It is amazing to me how our Yoruba ancestors were inspired to this binary thought system that predates modern technologies. My goal is to research how they came to it and spread the love that is blossoming within me to the world. And like that author concluded, the rituals are but a tiny glimpse of the psycho-social power of the faith.

Excellent chapter in an excellent series of books. The amazing continuity in the entire, 6 book series as it spans vast millennia is wonderful. I consider this series to represent a perfect melding of sci-fi & fantasy, with technology as well as sword wielding, feudal societies, and mystical powers. Plots & conspiracy that have been adhered to and advanced over those millennia, The Bene Tlielax, purveyors and creators of fantastic and forbidden technologies and secret practitioners of a supposedly extinct religion, the Bene Gesserit(sp?) (witches, to some) a society of Women who outwardly exist only to serve, and they do serve well, often enriching those they serve, but with, some would say dark ulterior motives, at the center of which is their ancient breeding program whereby they seek to control the evolution of the whole human race. Women so in tune and in touch with their minds, musculature & nervous systems as to appear to be possessing mystical powers such as Voice the ability to read another so well that one can pitch their voice in just the right tone so as to force compliance on a subject with a word, Truthsense, the ability to read falsehood in almost anyone, genetic memories spanning thousands of generations, passed on from Reverend-mothers about to die with another adept to preserve the combined wisdom and knowledge acquired through the ages. The ability to be relaxing, to be slouching in a chair one instant and be across the room holding your larynx ripped from your bleeding throat quicker than you can blink. There are body shields and house shiields, that stop projectiles making guns all but obsolete, hence the swords. V-STOL aircraft called ornithopters (for their birdlike wings) or thopters for short. The Spacing Guild with their monopoly on inter-stellar travel which they hold in an iron grip. Sword masters who are adept with a wide array of weapons and lightning reflexes and minds that come closer to the Bene Gesserit than almost any others. Mentats, human computers to skirt the ancient laws spawned by the Butlerian Jihad outlawing most "technology" but most especially "thinking machines." and at the heart of it all, The Spice, "Melange" produced once only by the giant sand-worms (the holy makers, Shai-hulud) of Arrakis (Dune). the substance that prolongs life, that sharpens physical and mental prowess, that grants the Spacing Guild navigator their ability to "fold space" to achieve faster than light speed travel, that gives prescient abilities to the Bene Gesserit and to Paul Muad Dib and his descendants, and is highly addictive with the most apparentsymptom being the entire eyeball turning blue, the pupil, the irisand the white. A vast rich universe of adventure. I highly recommend the entire six book series.

To this reader, Chapterhouse: Dune, is as essential as the the first book itself. By this time in the series we readers are demanding answers to some of the most intriguing mysteries ever woven into the fabric of space of time within a science fiction universe. And this book absolutely delivers those answers with astonishing impact. Through a writing style that itself is fluid and seamless the reader materializes firmly in the mesmerizing Dune universe. The wrap up to the series, Chapterhouse does something few series ever achieve: it ends things brilliantly.

The story telling is, without saying, mesmerizing. I read them all for the third time on Kindle and it was even better than before. I read it in the past and much was lost on me. I read it now and, I must say, Herbert is 100% correct. The present affects your past. When I read it again in the future under a lamp of unknown and unguessed qualities how will I interpret his words then? You get out of this final chapter what you have to put into it.Spoiler Alert!!!This time around and, after reading his son's collaborations, I especially enjoyed the dropped hints that Holtzman was not the originator of the Holtzman equations. In the text itself he demonstrates that the written word of history cannot be relied upon. Brilliant. The second thing I noticed is the prediction of the Cycle of Government. Rebels, Entrenched power, Bureaucracy, Aristocracy, and finally: Oppression to maintain the status quo. It is interesting that this seems to be happening now. Or already has happened (again). Interesting Times. While this work it much more "cerebral" than Heretics, It winds up the Old Empire, the Golden Path, and the players of the finite game. All the crazy Atredies Heretics with their wild Siona genes going freaking wild in a infinite Universe. Unleashed. Finally.Sort of leaves you wanting more.

After now having read the 1st 6 books, I found this to be my least favorite, which is not to say it wasn't good. As with much of Herbert's writing, there are times when I question if I'm reading a story or attending a college lecture. While I liked how it ended, it seemed to take SO much time getting there!

I love the Dune series original six books. The first time I tried to read this sixth book, in my late 20s, I set it aside because it confused me. However, during a series re-read, in my late forties, I had no problem; in fact it is now one of my favorites of the six.

I have been a pianist for the last 25 years, and my 5 year old daughter decided she wanted to learn. We don't have any instructors in our city, so I decided I could teach her in the beginning. I remembered using the Alfred books when I began lessons, so I was happy to see they were still in print! I ordered the Alfred's Basic Piano Course Lesson Book, Theory, and Technic (Level 1). They are meant to go together. The books are well laid out and simple for a child to follow. My 5 year old is an early reader, and with me, she has no problem following these books. They are illustrated and the print is large. The books will let you know when to incorporate the lessons from the Theory and Technic books, as the lessons taught will coincide and help build on each other. In the beginning, your child will learn the basics on reading music, but for the first half of the books, a numbered finger system will be used in place of a traditional staff. This is to build your child's ability to use their separate fingers correctly. If you are using this as a parent to teach your own child, my only advice is to go slowly and patiently. Make sure that the child understands and is using the correct technic before moving ahead. It is a simple book, but speed is not key. This takes time and practice in order to build confidence. This is the perfect first lesson book.

I have been teaching private piano lessons for 15 years and I am delighted with the Alfred series. This book specifically has quite a few songs that the kids will recognize. It starts by introducing the dotted quarter not, which is often difficult for students. It ends with great coverage of the primary chords, I, IV, V7. I love the approach Alfred takes to introducing those chords, then using them so much for the accompaniment. At first the kids are always very confused by it, but by the end of the book, they recognize them easily in all their pieces and can name them without any trouble. Be aware that some of the supplements in the series are substantially harder than the corresponding lesson book.

The Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course book is the perfect addition for any new piano player. These basic piano teaching books are easy to follow, easy to read, and easy to teach. The pages are filled with a good use of white space. The book itself is made of good quality and I do not feel that they will easily deteriorate. I believe that these books by Alfred's Basic Piano Prep are the basic books for piano knowledge and a great place to start a beginner. I have already purchased other of the Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course books and will continue to purchase from this publisher. I have also steered my student's toward purchasing their own sets of these books to help with practicing outside of the classroom setting. These books will definitely stay around in my teaching library for years to come!! I look forward to seeing what other prep books are written and how they supplement the current books!

I would call myself a beginner piano teacher, as I play the piano myself but have had no instruction as to how to teach others to play. I now have four beginner students, whom I have been teaching for a little over a year.I love the Alfred method. The four books: technic, lesson, solo/recital, and theory all seem to really work well together. The songs coordinate with each other, so for each new concept taught in the lesson books, the student has a warm-up, a solo piece, and some theory work to back it up. I find this to be very effective. It gives the students a chance to see several examples of each concept, and practice each new concept in different ways until they achieve perfection with it. It also really walks the teacher through each concept very clearly, giving definitions for musical terms and clear instructions for which songs go together. I feel like the order in which concepts are taught also makes a lot of sense.Overall, it's a good method for a teacher who doesn't know a whole lot about HOW to teach another person to play the piano!I currently have some of my students on this level, and others on the regular beginner levels. I love how all of the different levels are interchangeable, so gifted students can advance more quickly, and students who need a little extra reinforcement can stay on the lower levels. The map for how this all works is on the back of all of the books, which you can see on the book preview. So many great things about Alfred!

This product arrived within a few days of ordering. It was in pristine condition. I use this set of books because they are what my piano teacher prefers to teach from. Although the book says for later beginners, it should be a bit more specific. It is definitely not designed for adult learners (the songs are geared more toward children or adolescents). I do not mind so much, but others might. All in all a great buy. I recommend the seller. Delivered as promised and had a very accurate description of product. I am very pleased.

I have more than a full collection of Christmas piano books for my students. I have one young student who is currently in the Alfred B lesson book. It sticks mostly to the C position and does not introduce the Middle C position. I purchased this book specifically for her to have songs in her usual position. Turns out this book is completely in the Middle C position. I'll probably keep it because it has teacher duets, but I'd still recommend the Bastien Christmas books over this series. The layout is cleaner and the pictures are more enticing.
