Amazon.com Review

SOS! With this well-known international distress call (it stands for Save Our Souls), many a stranded survivor of disaster has attempted to spread the word that help is needed--fast. And whether survivors are at sea, buried in earthquake rubble, lost on mountains, or trapped in a crashed car, remarkable rescue workers--human and animal--are equipped to rush in and save souls. Dorling Kindersley is renowned for its stunning reference books; Rescue is no exception. This guide to the thrilling world of emergency rescue service is chock-full of compelling photos of real incidents, rescue techniques, protective clothing, vehicles, and supplies. Informative text instructs readers how to survive until help arrives (it's not a comprehensive how-to, though) and allows them a peek at the lives of firefighters, mountain rescue teams, lifeguards, wartime rescuers, and natural and environmental disaster workers. From historical events (the Chernobyl meltdown, the Oklahoma City bombing, the sinking of the Titanic) to futuristic technologies in the works (mine-detector robots, battery-operated personal beacon devices for people at sea, radar flashlights that allow police to "see" through walls in a hostage situation), rescue situations and solutions never fail to fascinate. My adult non-reading special-needs son loved this book. Great book with lots of pictures!

I purchased this for my grandson's fifth birthday, we love it. We are a rescue family, he is the next generation :)

it's okay I guess

'Eyewitness Rescue" is about just what you would think it is about--all kinds of rescue! But first--just as in real life and in this book--"First on the scene. In any rescue operation, the priorities are to locate those who need help, assist those who are injured, trapped, or in danger, and take them to a place of safety." As with all Eyewitness books the two-page spread is divided between text and photographs. The next two sections are curious but responsible. First, fictional rescues, e.g. an illustration from "Lassie Come Home," novel and television series in which Lassie, a collie, rescues people from fires and drowning; second, historical rescues , e.g. the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and rescue vehicles and materials at the time. The rest of the book, some 50 pages, details the various kinds of rescue: through the use of technology, fire departments, air ambulances, emergency medicine, the police force, armed-response teams, coastal rescues, mountain rescues, using animals for rescue, wartime rescues, natural disasters, and remote rescues. There are more.Just a couple of examples that jumped out at me. Dog soldiers (who receive medals for bravery) are trained to go out into battlefields to locate wounded but still living soldiers. There, next to the human, the dog lies until rescue arrives. Another is an amputation kit from the 18th century. It had varying sizes of saws and knives to cut varying sizes of human limbs from fingers to legs. Hot pitch was used to seal cauterized wounds. Later an ointment made of egg yolks and turpentine sealed the wounds and improved survival rates.More modern examples of rescue techniqes include the police helicopter equipped with a heat-sensing camera to locate missing people or suspects even in darkness or bad weather. One other example is the pain relief available to victims with serious injuries. This is administered through anesthetic gas. Every ambulance carries a Primary Response Pack loaded with all manner of emergency supplies.Every time I read through an Eyewitness book I think about children reading each one and getting an idea for a future career or field of study. An area of rescue is surely a noble calling.

There are FAR, FAR, FAR better books than this if you want to explore meditation. Sam is no expert by a LONG shot. I didn't even finish reading it. I've read 100's of books on Buddhism, eastern thought and meditation - it's not that this one doesn't cover the basics I guess - it's just that you can find so much better information from far better qualified teachers than Sam Harris.

What a great book. I was born and grew up in Theravada Buddhist family. Even as a teenager I saw the value in the 4 Noble truths. But I couldn't quite come to grips with the idea of Reincarnation & the Law of Karma. That sounded like a " Celestial Accounting System that worked on Auto Pilot". To me that seems as nonsensical as the "Old Man in the Sky" offered by Abrahamic religions.Especially when as a young Buddhist one of the first things I remember learning is Buddha's admonishment to "Never believe in Dogma. But to sift all teachings(including his) through your own experiential filter. Then if it it still seems valid to try it on". When you just take that teaching into heart and try on the concepts Karma & Reincarnation; it makes the 8 fold noble path a moot point. But Sam Harris brings a new perspective. Damn You Sam Harris! your arguments takes away my excuses for staying away from the meditation cushion. It is a pretty dense subject matter. With a chapter on Consciousness and another one on Self. While some of it was new and interesting, other ideas might take 2nd or 3rd reading to get through my thick skull.I think every Buddhist should read and consider what is laid out here. I highly recommend to anyone who has a intellectual curiosity about spirituality. Yet from my experience I know that only few of the most ardently spiritual would dare to tackle it. Between Sam Harris and Stephen Batchelor's writing they extend the Buddhas admonishment for experiential learning by applying 21st century rationality to the inquiry. These two writers and their writing gives a good intellectual foundation to wade into spirituality with healthy dose of 21st century agnosticism.

Here's one of the many examples that Sam Harris uses throughout this book regarding consciousness: Suppose you're going to Mars via a teleport machine. Many of your friends have already done this safely and are already on Mars. But what the creator of this teleport machine doesn't tell you is your whole being down to every last atom is copied and reconstructed on Mars. The "copy" has all your memories, your appearance, etc, and is essentially you. Then your body on Earth is vaporized painlessly in a split second. To ensure safety, the reconstruction must be finished before vaporization. This poses a few interesting points about consciousness. Because reconstruction must be finished first, does that mean there are two conscious people that are considered you? If you can be reconstructed by a machine, what does this say about consciousness? Is conscious defined by physical continuity or physiological continuity, as with the teleport machine? If you knew how this teleport machine actually worked, would you still do it?All these questions and more are posed to the reader, than Sam Harris explains his views on it via science and logic. I found his arguments sound and in my opinion hard to argue against. Sam Harris is a neurosurgeon and a non-religious spiritual teacher, so he has plenty of experiences to answer these deep questions.I cannot recommend this book enough. I also suggest listening to his podcast "Waking Up".

I normally am not a person having much interest in things of a spiritual nature, but I decided to read this book on the recommendation of a friend. Actually, as I learned, spirituality does not have to have anything to do with religion. You can have a “spiritual experience” without any religious overtones. In fact, the word spirit comes from a Latin word which is a translation of a Greek word that means “breath.” It was around the thirteenth century that the term became entangled with beliefs about immaterial souls, the supernatural, and ghosts. We note that Christians, Muslims, Hindus and others can experience something spiritual in regards to their religions. The author indicates that because their beliefs are incompatible with one another, the spiritual component must emanate from a deeper principle.According to the author, this book is “an introduction to the brain, a manual of contemplative instruction, and a philosophical unraveling of what most people consider to be the center of their inner lives: the feeling of self we call “I.” There is a deeper principle at work – that the feeling of “I” or “self” is an illusion. The author uses his personal experience to help readers see the nature of their own minds in a new light. We are shown that a rational approach to spirituality seems to be what’s missing from secularism and the lives of most people. The author has spent considerable time seeking experiences of the kind that gave rise to the world’s religions. For example, he notes that he spent two years on a silent retreat in increments of one week to two months practicing different types of meditation for up to eighteen hours per day. That’s determination! We are introduced to a concept called mindfulness. Facilitating this state may involve a technique called vipassana (meaning insight), or consolation of the Satipatthana Sutta (an empirical guide to freeing the mind from suffering). No worry, we are provided with some instructions from the author on how to meditate properly. In life, we grasp at transitory pleasures, we worry about the future – life is stressful. The “spiritual life” promoted by the author is a solution to bringing this stress to an end. He starts by investigating the nature of consciousness and shows us that by transforming its contents through deliberate training we can achieve the basis of spiritual life.We our next introduced to a more detailed discussion of “self.” He tries to convince us that this sense of self is just an illusion and that spirituality consists of realizing this moment to moment. He supports this notion by showing that nothing a Christian, Muslim, or Hindu can experience constitutes evidence in support of their belief whether it be ecstasy, bliss, inner-light, or whatever. It is because their beliefs are logically incompatible with one another. In the book, we see that the illusion of the self can be investigated and dispelled. Harris shows how he reached his conclusion through much meditative practice with various “gurus,” and Dzogchen masters. More support for his views comes from a discussion of near-death experiences and drug use.The author concludes: “Until we can talk about spirituality in rational terms – acknowledging the validity of self-transcendence – our world will remain shattered by dogmatism. This book has been my attempt to begin such a conversation.”

I grew up in a Christian family and then earned degrees in Philosophy and Neuroscience. As an atheist, I've been mourning the loss of faith for years. Just because you want something to be true, doesn't mean it is. Losing one's faith can definitely leave a hole. This is the book that begins to fill the void and emptiness that I've felt from that loss. Thank you Sam Harris. This book will change lives.

This guide is fairly limited and does not cover that much territory. There are not enough details and they are organized in a too disjointed manner. I have found it of little use for trip planning purposes.

Good info and pics.

I am excited to take a few of these road trips

It had pictures that made it exactly right.

This can be be a good travel guide for New England travelers. It is very detailed and includes such items as local prices for food and lodging.

This is an eye-opening book. Though it was written about ten or so years ago, the information and dynamics exposed are still, unfortunately, germane. Written with compassion and thoroughly researched, this little tome is essential for understanding the mechanics of poverty among the (hard) working class.

There is a gross misperception that all employed working Americans are doing well living the American dream, well this book rips off the cover from this blanket of lies, on pages 4-5 "BUT THE GREAT SECRET OF AMERICA IS THAT A VAST NEW IMPOVERISHED POPULATION HAS GROWN UP IN OUR MIDST. YET THESE ARE NOT AMERICANS WHO HAVE BEEN EXCLUDED FROM THE WORLD OF WORK; IN FACT, THEY MAKE UP THE CORE OF MUCH OF THE NEW ECONOMY. INDEED, OUR RECENT PROSPERITY RESTS, IN PART, ON THEIR MISERY. THEIR POVERTY IS NOT INCIDENTAL TO THEIR ROLE AS WORKERS, BUT DERIVES DIRECTLY FROM IT.THEY ARE AMERICA'S SUPER-EXPLOITED. AND THAT IS BOTH A SHAME AND A CHALLENGE OF HISTORIC PROPORTIONS. A SHAME BECAUSE AMERICA HAS ALWAYS HONORED WORK, YET NOW FINDS ITSELF IN THE POSITION OF DEGRADING IT. A CHALLENGE BECAUSE WHATEVER ONE THOUGHT OF AMERICA'S WELFARE POOR, FEW PEOPLE WERE MAKING MONEY OFF THEM. THE SAME CANNOT BE SAID OF OUR NEW WORKING POOR. CORPORATIONS, CORPORATE EXECUTIVES, SHAREHOLDERS, AND AMERICAN CONSUMERS ARE MAKING A LOT OF MONEY OFF OF THEM. THIRTY MILLION AMERICANS, ONE OUT OF EVERY FOUR WORKERS, MAKES LESS THAN $8.70 AN HOUR. AND THESE LOW-WAGE, NO-BENEFIT JOBS TRANSLATE INTO BILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF PROFITS,EXECUTIVE PAY, HIGH STOCK PRICES, AND LOW CONSUMER PRICES."In case you're wondering exactly who are these low-wage workers then turn to the bottom of page 5-6, "THEY ARE NURSING HOME WORKERS AND HOME HEALTH-CARE WORKERS WHO CARE FOR OUR MOTHERS AND FATHERS, YET MAKE SO LITTLE INCOME THAT MANY QUALIFY FOR FOOD STAMPS. THEY ARE POULTRY PROCESSING WORKERS WHO BONE AND PACKAGE THE CHICKEN WE EAT FOR OUR DINNER, YET THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE LINE TO GO TO THE BATHROOM. THEY ARE RETAIL STORE WORKERS WHO HELP US IN DEPARTMENT STORES, GROCERY STORES AND CONVENIENCE STORES, BUT CAN'T GET ENOUGH HOURS OR BENEFITS TO SUPPORT THEMSELVES WITHOUT AT LEAST TWO JOBS. THEY ARE HOTEL WORKERS WHO ENSURE THAT THE ROOMS WE SLEEP IN ON OUR BUSINESS TRIPS AND FAMILY VACATIONS ARE CLEAN, BUT WHO HAVE NO SICK DAYS OR FUNERAL LEAVE OR VACATION TIME. THEY ARE JANITORIAL WORKERS WHO EMPTY OUR WASTEBASKETS AFTER DARK BUT WHO HAVE NO CHILD CARE. THEY ARE CATFISH WORKERS WHO PROCESS THE FISH WE ENJOY, BUT MUST WORK WITH INJURED WRISTS FROM CONTINUOUS MOTION ON THE LINE. THEY ARE 1-800 CALL-CENTER WORKERS WHO ANSWER OUR REQUESTS AND TAKE OUR ORDERS WHILE UNDER CONSTANT MANAGEMENT SURVEILLANCE. AND THEY ARE CHILD-CARE WORKERS WHO EDUCATE AND CARE FOR OUR CHILDREN WHILE THEIR OWN LIVE IN POVERTY."Another term for these lies is myths which can be found on page 7 "HOWEVER, THE REIGNING AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY THAT BEING IN A LOW-WAGE JOB IS A TEMPORARY SITUATION, THAT MOBILITY WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM, UNDERMINES SUCH CONCERN. BUT THE EVIDENCE BELIES THE MYTH. WHILE SOME LOWER-WAGE WORKERS WILL MOVE UP THE LADDER, MOST WILL NEVER MOVE INTO THE MIDDLE CLASS. THEIR CHILDREN WILL SUFFER THE SAME FATE. IGNORING THIS REALITY LEAVES IN PLACE WHAT HAVARD ECONOMIST RICHARD FREEMAN CALLS AN "APARTHEID ECONOMY."INADEQUATE WAGES ARE ONLY ONE PART OF THE PROBLEM. MOST OF THESE WORKERS LACK BASIC JOB BENEFITS SUCH AS HEALTH CARE, SICK PAY, DISABILITY PAY, PAID VACATION, AND RETIREMENT."The entire chapter 5 HOW LOW-WAGE JOBS DAMAGE US ALL from pages 81-100 should be read by everyone who feels they're not affected by people who work in low-wage jobs, for those people who feel low-wage workers should move up the ladder then you need to read the section titled THE MOBILITY MYTH pages 101-103. I salute this book's author BETH SHULMAN for telling the truth about the millions of low-wage workers in America, if you care about this issue as much as I do then you need to go to amazon.com and buy this book.

Interesting. Loved it.

Ordered this book late for my son who needed it for school. It came right away and in great condition for a used book!

Although I haven't read the oft-referenced NICKLED AND DIMED, I discovered this book totally by accident and found it both informative and True. As one of the new "working poor", I responded immediately to the personal anecdotes. I am an educated white male in my early-forties who as recently as three years ago made $35,000 a year. Now, the best job I can find is in a bookstore for $8.50 an hour! And in my own immediate family, there are three others who have been struggling to find ANY job for two years, one of whom has a BA in Accounting!! So if anything, the book's alledged questionable anecdotes criticized by others certainly speak to this reader. Indeed, one could argue that anecdotes often reveal greater Truths than dry facts....Of course, Shulman has an agenda, but it is one backed up by facts, quoted in her book and elsewhere. It is undebatably true that the job situation in the US is changing for the worse, and it doesn't take this book, or others, to prove it, but simple observation. However, it is great to see many of the facts I've heard so many times elsewhere collected in a single volume.Sadly, Shulman is probably preaching to the converted. While I agree with every point in the book, its doubtful a Conservative or corporate-apologist would -- but then again, they are the ones who got us in this mess and are profiting from it, so what do they care? For me, this book makes me want to read more, so I think I'll check out "Nickled and Dimed" now....

Although in the blurb on the front of this book, Barbara Ehrenreich says she wishes she'd written it herself, this book is no Nickel and Dimed; it is less readable and much more tendentious. Beth Shulman does a satisfactory problem of describing the problems low-wage workers face (although I think she could've used a lighter hand with the statistics), but her proposed solutions are radically socialistic ones that in my opinion would have a devastating effect on the fabric of life in the U.S.She does make several incisive points, though. Contrary to what many of us believe, there is very little mobility out of low wage work, even if one works hard. Also, low wage earners in most other affluent countries are significantly better off than their counterparts in the U.S., which is touted as the Land of Opportunity. This book, for all its shortcomings, did make me think differently about low wage earners and the problems they face, but if you're only going to read one book on the subject, I'd recommend Nickel and Dimed.
