About the Author
Cat Gwynn was educated in photography, film, and fine arts at Otis- Parsons Art Institute, and has completed numerous master workshops with such esteemed artists as Mary Ellen Mark, Joel Peter Witkin, and Barbara Kruger. Her artwork is collected and exhibited in international galleries and museums including the Lishui Museum of Photography in China, The Drawing Center in New York City, the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art, and is sold through the Susan Spiritus Gallery. She has lectured at numerous institutions including Otis College of Art and Design, New York University, and Art Center College of Design.Cat’s images have appeared on the cover of Artweek, and in numerous other publications including Artforum, Newsweek, and Texas Monthly. She is also a seasoned lifestyle and portrait photographer whose images have sold through Corbis and Getty Images for nearly twenty years. Her commercial clients include Apple Computers, Starwood Resorts, Discovery Communications, and T-Mobile. In addition, Cat has gifted her talents photographing pediatric patients for Flashes of Hope, a volunteer organization focused solely on funding research for children’s cancer.Gathering the tools and techniques she discovered along her healing path, Cat developed 10-Mile Radius: Creating a Personal Map for Wellness, a powerful transformative recovery program which marries art-making into a daily mindfulness practice. She teaches the program at recovery and wellness centers, working with patients to co-facilitate a shift in their personal narrative. Oh my gosh, I just finished DEVOURING this beautiful book. To say I am breathless, admiring, moved is to say nothing because this book brings so much depth, so much emotion, it stuns. It's personal and universal. The words, both Cat's, and those she has chosen to quote, are beautiful and deep. Cat is a photographer and a writer. This book is the depiction of her embrace of and battle with breast cancer. The photos though, are not literally about her fight. They reflect her three-year commitment to herself as she went through treatment. I don't want to give away any more, but I HIGHLY recommend "10 Mile Radius," because I believe, as each of us deals with our own lives, we can use what she offers, what she learned and what she teaches in this exquisite.
What a delightful book. From the first page to the last, one thing struck me: Jonathan Livingston Seagull. If you read that once national bestseller of the 1970s, or have read it, you will know what I mean right away when you open 10 Mile Radius. This is that, a book about what is important in coming to terms with life and mortality.But, this is a photography book, right? You bet it is. I confess I know Cat as a Facebook contact and have seen her work there. I knew she had a gift for color, but did not fully comprehend it until I opened 10 Mile Radius. Cat’s photographic work struck me as every bit the equal of William Eggleston, who is credited as a genuine master of the color photography medium. You cannot say one is better than the other when you lay their art aside each. Try it.So, a Zen Buddhist photography book with seagulls? Exactly, now you get it. A simple book about dealing with cancer, life, and art that looks simple, yet is sublime and deep at the same time. That’s how these things work.Do take the time and to read and appreciate 10 Mile Radius. Then go watch the gulls soar.
This book is an inspiration....A reminder to keep living life even when life isn't fair. Cat beat cancer thanks to her medical team and the care she received but possibly also thanks to her positive, inquisitive attitude.
