This book has a niche audience that will love it, but everyone outside that group will see all the lost potential. This is a solidly average book. The pros: World is distinct and interesting. Plotpoints are there and have potential to be compelling. Continual addition of powers gives a sense of progression. The cons: The writing. That’s a big thing to say for a book, and that’s what keeps this one painfully average. You get glimpses into the world and how it works, but the book is missing those little touches that really brings the world to life. The characters have personalities, but it’s hard to see and understand them when they keep jumping topics and jumping from one thought/emotion to another. This is most painfully obvious with the MC and least so with Wizard Basalt, which makes him the most likeable and relatable character in the book. The plotpoints are there. I had trouble several times figuring out what they were as the characters bounced around whatever thought entered the author’s mind. Then there’s Cranny and his humor. Fits in and will be funny to many in the recommended age range, but the book hinges A LOT on this humor and it is constantly immersion-breaking and eye-rollingly dumb to all not amused by it.With all the cons versus pros why is it still three stars? The first book was so enjoyable I couldn’t bring myself to give this less. There are moments where this book is on par with the first book, but sadly, it is inferior in all other ways.

I like this story alot.still has grammatical errors and stuff but my biggest beef is with the "Cranny" character.its supposed to be his subconscious slash split mind construct yet some how it can use all Danny's ability without his permission OR knowledge and now it can apparently cause him physical harm?reference the scene where it used his magic to trip him and make him fall on his face.how long before it decides the Danny personality needs to go songs can take over?it seems more and more like Danny doesn't do anything with his power.he just has "Cranny" do it all.he didn't even design the awesome new palace at the end his mental construct did.seems like more and more Danny is irrelevant and totally replaceable.thats why cranny needs to die.

The story was still enjoyable and I am glad I finished the book. There were just too many little things that added up to me not liking it as much as the first book. To avoid spoiler and to let the reader take their own journey I am not going to explain those things. But two notes to the author 1) check your edit, there were some minor issues and inconsistencies. 2) Please tone down Cranny by the end I dread the little “*”. It started to feel like every other sentence was just some snide remark. I understand trying to interject some humor but it became tedious.

A good second book in the Pentacle series. This slice of life, reincarnated on a game world story, has moved past all the magical academy stuff from book 1. It instead focuses on Danny’s training in his new elemental aspects and his efforts to help the elves with their magical problems. If he can help them, they’ll help the humans fight off the invading goblin army.If you liked book 1, you’ll like book 2. There’s a lot of DBZ style training and transformations, but it still maintains it’s RPG aspect progression. The harem stuff is still here too. You don’t get to the action till the last act, but it’s a good way to show off all that training.Overall, I enjoyed the story, though I’ll admit that book 2 is a hard place to jump into the series. Go read book 1 first.Score: 7 out of 10.

I read the first two books. There’s a lot of potential here (cool story, unique magic system, etc.). Unfortunately, the author ruined perfectly good books. The world building leaves a lot to be desired. The character development is severely lacking. The author is transported to another world where all societies are still at the pre-industrial stage. Somehow, every character from the his parents to the elven Queen talks and acts like a parody of a suburban a teenager. Even the elven queen acts like an adolescent girl. The characters also make really stupid decisions. No one in the book seems to think 5 minutes ahead. Everybody just reacts to whatever is in front of them. Moreover, no one seems to be able to accomplish anything on their own. The hero always saves they day. He defeats the bad guys, discovers plots, builds a new city, blah, blah, blah. Add in the pedophile element, the protagonist is. 44 and is paired with 3 adolescent girls. Not a fan.

The low rating is due in great part to the non-existent editing. As harsh as it sounds, I found myself wondering if he wrote the book on his cell phone. A simple sweep with a WORD grammar check would have picked up on the copious lack of consistent (and accuracy) in tenses and plurals. It was distracting and aggravating.Story ended up being a bit disappointing in the end. It seemed a bit disjointed in the engagements with the elves and the trio. However, I would have given it a 3 or 4 but for the terrible editing.

This series is probably one of the best three xianxia styled stories I have read. This book, in particular, was awesome. Though the MC is ridiculously over powered, he is not perfect, and the ineptitude is rather humorous at times. This series is great and this book was awesome (I know I am repeating myself). Look forward to the next book.

Faith – ONE – Meanings of Faith Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. —Hebrews 11:1 Faith is not belief in spite of evidence but a life in scorn of the consequences. —Clarence Jordan Faith is the foundation of this book, and it is a rich, complex, even elusive concept. In its broadest secular meanings and also in a more specific reference to religious life, the word “faith” is profoundly important to all of us. When I completed my term in the White House and described the relationship I had tried to maintain with the people of America, I entitled my presidential memoir Keeping Faith. Fifteen years later, I wrote a book about the religious values and experiences that had shaped my life, and how the beliefs I inherited had been transformed into what I called Living Faith. It is obvious that my having kept faith with the citizens when I was in office and the faith that I have in my Creator and moral values are not the same. When I look for synonyms of the word, the short list includes (as used in Keeping Faith) “devotion,” “loyalty,” “commitment,” “fidelity,” “fealty,” “dedication,” and “allegiance”—and (as in Living Faith) “confidence,” “trust,” “reliance,” “conviction,” “belief,” and “assurance.” Since this book covers many of the same influences in my life, there is some inevitable similarity in the texts. Both keeping faith and living faith have provided the foundation for our governments and great religions. Trusted leaders of ancient times defined those principles that described their highest ideals and expressed them in words and beliefs, and people agreed to adhere to them. The combined Declaration of Independence and the Constitution with its Bill of Rights would be a notable example for the people of the United States, while for Christians it would be the Ten Commandments amplified and further explained by Jesus Christ in his Sermon on the Mount. As already described, world leaders made a concerted attempt to reach the same goal following the Second World War, with the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These were supplemented by various international agreements, such as the Geneva Conventions, designed to protect wartime prisoners from torture or extreme punishment. In 1976 the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) were ratified by enough nations to become international law. I signed both covenants while president, and the United States finally ratified the ICCPR in 1992. Our country still has not ratified the ICESCR; the American Convention on Human Rights, which I signed in May 1977; the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination; or the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. Ours is the only country of 193 that has not adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Since these global moves were effected, no important actions have been taken by the world community to improve the prospect of more equitable and humane relationships among people. Instead, the disparity in wealth between rich and poor has increased greatly, the portion of Americans in prison has skyrocketed and now exceeds that of any other nation, the partisan and racial divisions among our citizens have become deeper and sharper, our democratic system of elections and governing has become a tool of the wealthy, and we no longer believe that the future for our children will be better than the life that we experience. Even more recently, the threat of nuclear war has become more acute, America has abandoned its leadership as champion of a clean and healthy environment, confidence in our elected leaders has deteriorated further, and we citizens have tended to lose faith in each other. Many of our citizens have also lost faith in other “principles that never change,” including truth, equality, and goodwill. These issues are of great concern to me as I enter the last stages of my life. I still have faith that the world will avoid self-destruction from nuclear war and environmental degradation, that we will remember inspirational principles, and that ways will be found to correct our other, even potentially fatal, human mistakes. My faith is the key to my optimism. It is important to understand what it means, because faith is involved in almost every aspect of our lives. The first absolute faith that most of us developed was in our mothers, as we suckled at their breasts or relished the warmth of their protective bodies. Even as a child, I soon acquired faith in my father and later in my siblings, my teachers, some other relatives, and then a few of my close friends and playmates. I evolved faith in myself, with an increasing awareness of my own limitations. Later came faith in the U.S. Navy and fellow crew members on my submarine, plus things to which I was devoted during my career: democracy, freedom, and the ideals shared by citizens of the United States; service to others, justice, equality, and the truth. A simple example of faith is when we sing in a chorus or play in an orchestra, which requires an element of faith in one another, and a reciprocal need to cooperate. It is helpful to be reminded of the dictionary definition: “Faith is confidence or trust in a person or thing, or the observance of an obligation from loyalty, or fidelity to a concept, promise, or engagement.” Faith involves each of us in a highly personal way, as an agreement or contract, a kind of devotion, confidence, loyalty, or reverence. Faith transcends what we learn from experience or from reasoning, but every human also retains the freedom to lose confidence in a thing or person and to break promises or oaths—even to violate marriage vows or to become a traitor to our country. There is a difference between reasoning and believing, but both can lead to faith. “Faith” usually means belief either in a doctrine that we accept as truth or in a truth that is self-evident. We believe in things we never see, like historic events; ideals, like freedom; or the existence of germs and atoms. Sometimes we don’t believe things we observe ourselves, like the apparent small size of stars and other heavenly bodies. There is much illusion and much expansion of our thoughts in the activity of believing or having faith. We like to understand what it is that we believe, and how and why we believe it. Immanuel Kant says that we have faith in something (a) because we have always believed it; (b) on authority that we respect; (c) by self-evidence; (d) through persuasion; (e) through reasoning; or (f) because it could encompass what our community accepts as real or true without discussion or dissension. It is obvious that “faith” has many meanings, but it is most commonly considered to be religious in nature, and the best definition and examples of Christian faith are found in the eleventh chapter of the book of Hebrews: Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. . . . By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. Because the Hebrew Bible does not focus on faith as belief, and assumes that all who read the Bible believe in God, the word “faith” is used only twice in the King James Version of the Old Testament and 245 times in the New Testament. The writer of Hebrews relates faith directly and by name to a number of biblical heroes of Old Testament times whose actions were determined by it. By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. . . . By faith even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise. . . . By faith Abraham, when tested by God, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son. . . . By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. . . . By faith [Moses] left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. By faith he kept the Passover and the application of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel. . . . I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets, who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; . . . whose weakness was turned to strength. . . . These were all commended for their faith. The Bible goes on to say that “faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17); “A person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified” (Galatians 2:16); “But my righteous one will live by faith” (Hebrews 10:38); “Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you” (Romans 12:3); “We walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7); “You are all children of God by faith” (Galatians 3:26); “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9); “your faith—of greater worth than gold” (1 Peter 1:7); “. . . strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:7); and “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). In fact, the Holy Bible is primarily about faith. For humans to exist and live together and to share a common cause, we had to develop some degree of collective faith in each other, beginning within families and then extending to communities, villages, and ultimately to nations and even coalitions of nations. There can be disparities among them; citizens can be loyal to a nation, usually sharing common rules or laws, but it is not necessary for them to maintain personal faith in each other. Shared languages, beliefs, or interests help bind them together. We also submit to deities in which we have faith, out of our need for something or someone on whom to rely for meaning. I know from personal experience that faith in people or things can be a source of joy and strength and can help me meet challenges or accept times of sorrow or regret. Our faith is an integral part of our personalities. Faith is always a living thing, which is usually shared with others. In fact, Richard Niebuhr said that when we hold something to be true, we always have a relationship to it through a person we trust. His exact words were “All knowing involves this triadic relation of at least two subjects and an object.” To be a person is to be able to keep faith with each other, and Niebuhr’s claim is that we are bound to each other only as we are mutually bound to some third reality, to a transcendent cause to which both owe loyalty and on which both depend. By necessity and in utilizing our human freedom, we recognize in each other a common loyalty and a common bond. His statement is somewhat difficult to understand, but it raises an interesting point for discussion. The most important example of faith in my life has been the marriage vows I exchanged with Rosalynn. I realize that marriages can be based on many things, like common interests, sexual satisfaction, a desire to have children, economic or social advantages, or just to evolve a family community. In every case, there must be a strong element of faith in one another, something like an agreement or contract. This shared commitment can be transcendent, requiring a leap of faith more binding than all others, designed to survive any future challenges or differences. At the time of our marriage we could have said, “I love you now, and I believe I will always love you and be faithful.” Instead, we both took an oath before God “to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death us do part.” Fortunately, our continuing love and faith in each other has made it possible to honor these pledges despite many differences and challenges. We cannot remain true to ourselves if we are not faithful to those with whom we share a pledge, responsibility, or common cause. Faith implies, at least to some degree, a pledge of fidelity, and sometimes this can be at risk, or prove to be an error. There are occasions in our lives when we learn that our confidence in someone or in a concept no longer prevails. Marriages can prove to be ill-conceived, as can the formation of a close friendship, a business agreement, or a pledge of loyalty to an organization or an ideal. There are other limitations on faith. Sincere faith in something may not result in appropriate or commensurate action. For instance, we may accept and have total faith in the concept of racial and sexual equality, but we can then assume a superior relationship to others if it is to our advantage in dealing with blacks, Hispanics, or women, and act accordingly. The motivations for this response to a favorable opportunity usually come from an unattractive trait, like pride, envy, or selfishness. Having genuine faith in something or someone almost always means that we will have a positive reciprocal action or a tangible response. We live by faith, always with trust in other people and in mutual causes or values that we adopt, such as equal status of people, the principles of democracy, the deleterious effects of lying, the value of an agreement or contract, or the shared benefits of justice and adherence to common laws. These kinds of principles can be understood and honored by expressing them in inspired language, like the American Bill of Rights, the Ten Commandments, or the Sermon on the Mount. Through them, we strive to comprehend and to improve ourselves and the world in which we live. Many of us associate reliance on a deity with the maintenance of an ideal structure of human relations. Interpersonal faith is the foundation for love and hope. If humans no longer have faith in each other, can we continue to exist?

Former President Carter presents ideas about faith through a multifaceted lens with the hope of leading all readers into a better awareness of God. Can the God of Abraham can be the God not only of Christians and Jews but perhaps all religions espousing a belief in one God? Carter does not go that far but he does compare and contrast the three main religions affecting the lives of four billion people on our planet. While weaving quotes of other biblical scholars into a tapestry of his faith, Carter reminds Americans old and young of where he has been, who influenced him along his journeys and how he wound up teaching Sunday school in a town of 700 people.Should you worship at Maranatha Baptist Church what you will experience is an hour of unconditional love with real people and a personal presence with a very humble man who really is quietly evangelizing people in the hopes of bettering their lives.Anyone who struggles with faith, and seeks guidance toward being a better person in their marriage, in their work, in their community, in their country, can benefit from this book.

I have read every one of Jimmy Carter's books and completed this latest one in one day. In this book, he writes about the general use of the word "faith" and gives examples of faith in his personal life. He writes again about the wealth disparity between the rich and poor and describes how people with money in our country influence elections. He states that "our democratic system of elections and governing has become a tool of the wealthy." An oligarchy. He quotes several scriptures including, "Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds"- James 2:18. President Carter describes influential people who have demonstrated their faith and influenced his faith development with their writings and actions. He discusses how his volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity and The Carter Center are extensions of his faith. He frankly opens up about his 2015 cancer diagnosis and writes, "I was surprised and pleased to discover that I was not afraid, but overwhelmingly grateful for my long and good life while sad to be leaving the people I loved." After his initial cancer treatment, he warmly shares how the Plains' community rallied to support him, "When I returned home to Plains, the streets and front yards were covered with political-type campaign signs saying, "Jimmy Carter for Cancer Survivor." This is a quick read and covers several recent topics such as his illness and the recent political climate which were not covered in previous books. I am glad to have this book in my Jimmy Carter library.

I have all of President Carter's books. I am working toward reading all 30-plus. Unfortunately, I acquire books much faster than I am able to read. Not setting aside enough time is my biggest obstacle. "Faith" was one I couldn't and can't put down neither literally nor figuratively. I am a lifelong non-pious, non-believer. That said, I find President and Rosalynn Carter's devout unswerving faith to be a continuing inspiration to me as I see how it guides them to effect positive change in a world that is starving for honest government leadership, peaceful co-existence among nations, races, and religions, compassion for those in need of food, clean water, shelter, and advocacy for basic human rights, mental health awareness, and global eradication of preventable diseases. My only criticism of this particular book is that it's the only one I don't have signed by President Carter. Oh Well! See you in June Jimmy...

I knocked this book out in a couple of days. Jimmy Carter is a treasure and this is especially true juxtaposedthe contagion of Trump. Carter uses various lenses through which to look at faith measured against someof the ideas of our greatest theologians. It is a work that is multi layered and powerful. Caret always hasa sense of the bigger picture and is able to interface politics and justice through his life long quest for faith. He is one of the few former presidents in the modern age who has dedicated his life to others rather thanthe fees he could collect in speaking engagements. His humanity and goodness shines forth in this book.It is a very good read. But more importantly, he makes you 'think' about the issues of our day through the lensof faith, God, and just acts. He reminds us that 'justice' is a way of life, or ought to be!

The book is some what accurate until you read where the so called race came from. It's easy to be deceived because you read in the beginning about the three sons of Noah; Sham, Ham & Japhet. Because Japhet spread out in Asia, Russia & Europe the argument is made that the so called white race came from Japhet. However, there are other books out there that states otherwise that the first Greeks where black people and later was conquered by pale or the so called white race which is known as Esau. Don't fall for the holes in this book. I gave it three stars because like many other books there are things you can take out and things that are biblical; I referenced because the bible is my first book. The bible says that Esau is the Fore Father of the so called white race who which some people are afraid to admit, he came out of Shem. Who is biblically called the red people. Keep reading, but also study the scriptures over these books from men. Ecclesiastes 12:12-13[12]And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.[13]Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

The real history of the real Jews NOT the fakes living in Israel right now...

I purchased this book on the recommendation of a trusted friend. As I try to dig deeper into my history, I'll be reading a lot. My history isn't really taught in schools. Our history is barely a single, washed out and sanitized chapter in the History books. We are taught that we were in Africa, brought over on ships, worked as slaves singing negro spirituals in the fields, Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, Rosa Parks wouldn't give up her seat, Martin Luther King Jr marched, and we were free. What about BEFORE 1619? What was really going on and happening as we were "slaves"? Are we REALLY free? What about OUR history? So I read these books to gain insight. I think that if we taught our children that they are Kings and Queens, and conducted ourselves as such, we could make positive change. So add this book to your collection.

Don’t agree with everything he wrote, but definitely some great historical facts in here connecting the transatlantic slave trade to the 12 missing tribes of israel

Should be mandatory reading in schools. Excellent book.🔯

An amazing book packed with valuable information few resources today posses, I am finding it easy to read, even for the novice book reader its very user friendly, and packed with heaps of critical information that would take you a considerable amount of time to find, also factual, I strongly recommend as a must for any reader considering this purchase.

Great knowledge

I found this book to be an amazing read.

The Divine Harold Bloom (as he uses the term for Oscar Wilde) here defends the Western Canon, and while so doing became the recipient of much undeserved criticism, from the likes of so-called New Historicists, gender theorists, Marxist interpreters, and devotees of the School of Resentment. Battle worn and unyielding in his belief in literature that matters, Bloom here is indefatigable. In this, a pillar of western literary criticism, Bloom lucidly lays out his argument for the Canon. I wont defend the Canon here in this review, Bloom does that way better than I ever could, but I will say I appreciate his heroism. I will relate to you that during my undergraduate and graduate pursuits in the field of English Literature at an esteemed University, I can honestly say that the Canon does indeed need a champion. A reader of classical literature since I was a child, I experienced shock and dismay when much of my coursework was taken up with studying literature that was focused on due to "cultural significance" without regard to aesthetic beauty or literary quality. Without naming names, when one goes into a course of study that one hopes will incorporate Shakespeare, Milton, Dante and Cervantes, or the gods of the field, I ended up enmeshed in courses that focused on cultural/socio-political fetishes, with topical, and therefor irrelevant, importance, to call it that. Twenty years later, I'm still reeling from classes focused on comic books and political pamphlets. So, as always, I stuck to what I deem important-literature that has universal significance-Joyce, Becket, Proust, Kafka, Faulkner, Lawrence and Crane for the moderns; Shakespeare, Milton, Blake, Shelley, Dickens, Austen, Goethe, Mann, Flaubert, Tolstoy, Whitman, Melville, Hawthorne and James. Bloom, here as elsewhere, is a great guide for those of us who, due to the disintegration of the Academy, are forced into autodidactism. For those of us increasingly rare beings who search for where "wisdom might be found" in those authors where the muse speaks most evidently, this book is a great and treasured resource. Of the many accomplishments of this gem, Bloom allows us to become acquainted with these great writers and why they matter. One of the great regrets of my life is not having had the opportunity of surveying a course taught by Mr. Bloom at Yale or NYU, or better yet, sitting down and having a beer with the man and discussing poetry. I solace myself by reading his works incessantly and watching lectures and interviews on youtube (forgive me Mr. Bloom, I am as technologically adverse as you are, but I have to do what I have to do). This book, along with the Invention of the Human and The Daemon Knows, along with his other works, are my bibles in life as I unwaveringly search for wisdom in books, plays and poetry that have enriched my life and inner being immeasurably. Harold Bloom has had an incalculable impact on me as a living room scholar and on me as a person. Harold Bloom is, and will always be, a treasure great to behold.

I'm actually still trying to understand what Harold Bloom is saying about Shakespeare in some of his other works. I don't have that nailed yet, but his discussion of Dante and Don Quixote is really helpful.

A major part of the book reviews specific literature and compares and contrasts it with other works. This is very good reading and helps in selecting books to read. But, in my opinion, the list of literature in Bloom's canon is even more significant. I would not have known that some of the listed works were part of the great literature. And, the list is a good reminder of all that the great literature includes - even if it is Bloom's opinion. Given Bloom's background, I think his opinion as to which literature is the most significant deserves our attention.

The first few pages were bound crookedly. Luckily it is only like this to the copyright page. Two of said pages are also stuck together. However, having said that, so far the actual content of the book is excellent. I have yet to finish it and will try to write a review once I have.

Love him or hate him (I love him), Harold Bloom is one of the great readers of all time. He has personally read more widely and more deeply than some entire towns. It is certainly not necessary to agree with him to benefit from his insights and analyses. This book examines the notion that there was a body of writing that was central to Western Culture. Each generation read these works and was taught about these works as an essential part of the transmission of that cultural to each rising generation to keep it alive. It not only enriched the lives of those so educated, it benefited the world because of the great values and life giving force of the rich ideas they contained. He notes how this notion has not only been rejected by recent generations of academics, but is now almost unknown in the living generations of people who would constitute Western Culture if they knew what it actually was.He opens with an elegy to the Canon. The book is worth reading just for this essay. The next section examines authors of the Aristocratic Age. All Bloom readers know he is a worshipper of Shakespeare (he calls himself a Bardolater). He opens with an essay titled "Shakespeare: Center of the Canon". This section also includes essays on Dante, Chaucer, Cervantes (another Bloom favorite), Montaigne & Molière, Milton, Samuel Johnson, and Goethe. An impressive list, no?The next section is the Democratic Age and includes essay son Wordsworth & Jane Austen, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Dickens, George Eliot, Tolstoy, and Ibsen. The Chaotic age follows and includes Freud vis à vis Shakespeare, Proust, Joyce, Woolf, Kafka, Borges, and Beckett.Obviously, none of these sections is comprehensive. These are only representative writers of the periods Bloom is discussing with us. The final section is Cataloging the Canon and begins with an Elegiac Conclusion. This essay urges that he is not offering us a lifetime reading plan. Rather, he offers us a way to read. He offers advice on how to immerse yourself in certain kinds of reading. He urges us to seek better writing and to develop a taste that will lead us away that which is not worth reading because it takes you away from that which is. He talks about how to develop the taste of a good Critic rather than spewing the politics of resentment or being numb to the great and good.Bloom then provides extensive lists of works from each of the three periods. You may like to read some things on the list and not others. As I said, agreeing with Bloom is really not the point. It is being exposed to what is worthwhile in our cultural tradition and getting good grounding in why it is important that is critical. Our emphasis on practical education and vocational training has left most of us with insufficient time in school to indulge our cultural education. We have to do the work more or less on our own. This book can be a real help in making headway in that part of our personal education. Thanks, Professor Bloom!

Dense with confusing metaphor but interesting. Bloom is idiosyncratic in his viewpoint - not your old English teacher. Deeply read, full of energy and enthusiasm. Not a relaxing read.

Very well written and informative.

Bruce Fleury has written a tour-de-force about the evil historical legacy of Planned Parenthood founder, Margaret. It is an excellently written and documented opus that reveals the evil and racist intent of one of the most utterly vile and hateful women of the twentieth century -- A woman whose 1922 book, "The Pivot of Civilization" was used by Adolph Hitler as a valuable reference work while he wrote his memoirs in prison which produced "Mein Kampf." in 1925. The fact that this woman's face isn't stricken off of every monument in contemporary society and her name placed with other historical figures befitting her ilk -- Robespierre, Rousseau, Darwin, Marx, Freud, Hitler, Stalin, Bettye Friedan, etc... evil people whose ideas deconstructed Western Civilization and destroyed America's Judeo-Christian traditions and institutions. For further reading see my book review of Fleury's outstanding opus @ "The Negro Project and Margaret Sanger's proto-Nazism," [...]

This book is well researched, presents Sanger and her program to exterminate blacks and her influence on Nazi efforts. It is not a dry historical research but explains characters and events in a very readable manner.

I really want to give this book one star. One reason is because the writer is really obnoxious. He praises Ann Coulter, which gives you an idea of the tone of his writing. He's also super super super conservative, against welfare (in that, he has something in common with Margaret Sanger) doesn't believe in global warming, goes so far as to say that when Obama visited Notre Dame he insisted they cover all the religious statutes (which is ridiculous – they did cover up a sign saying Jesus, in addition to other signs that had nothing to do with religion,, but that was to give a better picture for television. There was nothing about covering statues )– he was basically saying that President Obama is so anti-religious he didn't want any pictures of Jesus or statues., Which is BS. Unfortunately, after that point I realized that I couldn't really trust anything he was saying – it ruined his credibility. it's kind of a waste. I really can't trust this book for anything after that. The book also ran a fine line close to being racist, because I think the author might be white – and he calls African Americans who supported Margaret Sanger as "idiots". There are a few interviews with pro-life advocates of today that are interesting and useful. Like a lengthy interview with Martin Luther King's niece, who is pro-life, and a sibling who lost her sibling as an aborted baby. These were really the only good parts of the book that I trust. Everything else is kind of questionable in my mind now after that ridiculous thing about Obama and statues. It's just that you can trust this guy when he makes it a false claim like that. It kind of invalidates everything he said, because his judgment must be so bad, or his naïveté, or perhaps his willingness to deceive. So it kind of destroyed the credibility of the book. But because of the interviews, I'm giving it two stars instead of one. Really disappointed, as a prolifer, in this book.

Fleury forgets that Martin Luther King himself was awarded the Planned Parenthood Margaret Sanger Award in 1966--for his advocacy of birth control. Or that Rosa Parks, the woman who gained infamy for the Montgomery bus protest also supported birth control. Parks herself had served on the Planned Parenthod national board, a feat which would have been biologically impossible had she been wiped out from existence. If you like tin foil hats or a flat earth, please read this book

With all the great reviews on this book I was expecting to be taken on a spiritual journey but that was not the case. Each and every time prior to reading this I prayed and asked God to open my heart so that I could grow stronger in my walk with Him and empower the Holy Spirit that lives within me in the hopes that this book would make me stronger, make Him stronger in me. Really disappointed; just being honest. Been in church my entire life; raised, baptized and KNOW that Jesus is the son of God and through his sacrifice and forgiveness I am saved. The words in this book were not very powerful and didn't jump off the pages. The book seemed more about instances someone had seen in the past or myths folks have heard of and then the author debunked these myths. Very general reading; found more quality and meaningful reading about the Holy Spirit in a quick Internet search. One thing that really aggravated me about this book; scriptures are referenced but not quoted most of the time. The authors instructs you to take a moment and look up this verse. Who does that? Quote it in your book! My bible is on my Kindle so therefore I read it on my Kindle or my phone. Be advised possible future reader; you will need a hard copy of the bible in hand when reading this book or if you are like me, you will have to switch back and forth from book to book on your Kindle or phone. This was such an inconvenience coupled with bland material that I just stopped reading. Made it about three fourths of the way then starting skimming hoping the good stuff was to come but to no avail.

This book was profoundly beautiful! I felt the spirit SO strong while reading it the past couple of Sundays. The author's way of writing just cuts straight to the soul. She does an amazing job of removing herself from the spotlight so that true learning can take place. I have so many favorite passages highlighted I hardly know where to begin, but one that struck me with particular force was this one:"An interesting thing I've noticed about miracles is that they seem to happen repeatedly to those who believe in God's power to do them. God doesn't intervene miraculously all the time. But the people I know who have seen one miracle can usually cite multiple instances of God's manifest power in their lives."I just can't recommend this enough for anyone who is looking to perfect their relationship with the Holy Spirit, and God!

This is a comprehensive book for anyone who wants to learn about the gifts and workings of the Holy Spirit in what the author calls "everyday believers." Susan Rohrer contends that you do not have to be a preacher, teacher or evangelist to be used by the Holy Spirit. She also encourages ordinary Christians to step out in faith and ask for the Lord to equip you to do ministry.I like that the author carefully defines each Spiritual gift--both what it is and what it is NOT. This helps people see the difference between what God gives and what Satan counterfeits. Susan gives examples of these gifts at work in her life and those of close friends. She also references Scriptural examples.I don't agree with the author's interpretation of the River of Life in Ezekiel 47. She also tends to belabor her point about God using everyday believers. I think this makes the book way longer than it needs to be.If you are a new believer and want to discover what more God has for you, this would be a good choice. If you are new to the Pentecostal/Charismatic movement, this is a nice, non-threatening book written by a person from a non-charismatic background. This would also be a great resource, if you have been walking with the Lord for some time and want to go deeper with Him and learn how to become better equipped for ministry. Pastors, lay leaders, and other ministers should read this. It would be a good book to use for personal study or in a small group or Sunday school setting. Read it prayerfully, and get ready for God to open your eyes to new possibilities!

Susan Robert has a personal writing style which makes her seem to be a friendly neighbour. She writes with sincerity and determination for her readers to understand the Holy Spirit who resides in everyone of us. I have always questioned who or what this gentle but mighty force that we have been given really is ..Susan guides the reader by sharing personal examples and supports her discovery with moving and enlightening passages from the Bible, a book I thought I knew but found .out differently. You will come away feeling reassurance that you have a wonderful gift that God wants you to celebrate and share with others. Discover the loving spirit inside you and your world will change.

Susan Rohrer's book, The Holy Spirit: Spiritual Gifts for Everyday People,! is profound. Though it is a very meaty book with thought provoking concepts, it is easy to read. It is filled with scripture references as well as personal experiences by author and others. It covers much on the Holy Spirit as well as the gifts of the Spirit in detail. I learned much on a head, heart, and spirit level. Since I tend to underline copiously in pencil when I read this type of book, I wish I had purchased a hardcopy since I will most likely reread it. I have recommended this book to several friends.

My small group studied this book and I LOVED it! We are now going through the second book. I was intrigued but unsure when we started the study. My background is very similar to what the author shares her background was, not growing up with experiencing the Holy Spirit and any power gift. I tried to delve into it a little in high school and college, but came away from those charismatic church experiences uncomfortable and skeptical. One thing I loved about the book is that every time I felt skeptical or wary, Susan voiced those same concerns at the same stage in her journey, so I felt validated in my own journey. Then those questions were followed up with Scripture. Lots of Scripture. This book answered so many of my questions in a simple, loving, direct, biblical way.

Omg my 2 boys loved this book ages 6 and 11. The youngest one would to know who wrote the book and had so many questions after reading it. Great job on the illustration and language, also the small activities in the back are a plus and kept both of them having a questioning mindset.

My boys love this book and so do I. It speaks to them in a language they understand while showing them how to build confidence, affirms their greatness and encourages hope and perspective goals for the future. Great addition to your child(rens) personal library! Looking forward to reading more from this author!

I absolutely adore this book. My son loved it from the time he looked at the cover. He said "Mommy, he looks like me." Follow that image up with the stories and words of affirmations and it's a hit in our household. I loved that's there's a call to action as well. Great job overall. :)

Awesome book to read to my babies.

I don't know why I decided to read this one. I'm not a huge fan of erotica. But the reviews said there was more of a storyline and people seemed to enjoy it so...Glad I did. There was definitely something exciting reading about the workshop encounters that played out on front of an audience.I also really liked the characters. Now I can't say that I relate to their promiscuity and non-issue with exhibition. But I did find myself envious how open and free they were with sexuality. They talked a little rough for me. I get talking dirty in bed. But even during regular conversations they we're quite blunt and crass. Everyone.Anyhow, I really liked this. It was a page Turner for me. Always wanting to know how far they would go. Sexually and emotionally.

From the title and description, you expect you'll get a good dose of hot sex scenes, and the author definitely delivers some very juicy scenes. My only complaint is a lack of details with the physical description of the characters. Sometimes, it was hard to picture them clearly - it was just a tad bit too vague in terms of fully developing the characters in a way that would have made them really come to life. Character development in other regards was well done and I appreciated the way the characters "matured" through some situations. This is not just a sex book - there are real plot lines, issues, and meat to the story to hold onto between each sexual encounter. I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

Yet another love story mixed with kinky amazing sex\love scenes! Meghan has a true talent writing. The sex therapist next door doesn't disappoint. It is about two women who have last issues that impact the way they view love. I couldn't put it down!

I enjoyed the book. The sex scenes were described very well. It was a hot book. The only thing that bothered me was how one of the main characters kept repeatedly sabotaging herself. That got a little annoying, but I know the author has to create angst. I really did enjoy the book very much!

When I think of Meghan O'Brien books, I think of extremely hot, erotic stories. I mean hello, THIRTEEN HOURS and HER BEST FRIEND'S SISTER. But she can also write emotionally touching stories like BATTLE SCARS and INFINITE LOOP. This book was both! A must read!

That's Meghan O' Brien for you. The yarn she spins, the characters she develops are nothing short of orgasmic!!She takes the most ordinary circumstances and turns them on their heads, giving them a fantastical and erotic turn. Need I say I love her writing and this novel reinforced that belief.

I have read every Meghan O’Brien novel published and have to say she is probably at the top of my favorite authors list. I don’t know exactly what I was expecting but the emotional interactions of the characters was so raw and real and understandable that I could feel myself getting really invested in their feelings and insecurities’. And the sex was off the charts! READ IT!!!

If there was more than 5 stars it would get more. One of the most hot, moving stories I have read. Honestly, by end of the book I had no words to describe how I felt. I still do not. A must read
