I read it and enjoyed ever page with intention to passing it on to my goddaughter who is in high school. I cant wait to share it with her and telling some others about it too. As I read it I said heck some adults need to read this especially when it some to the social media part and plenty others chapters. It was able to relate to the book in my 30s, so I'm sure others will too. The author has worked with thousands of teens in shelters, foster care, group homes and the prison system and inspired them to change their lives for the better. The book shines with the simple wisdom, deep insights and concrete tips she has learned working with teens in transition. . These interactions pepper the book with fascinating contributions. Written in a simple conversational style that teens will find fun to read but with layers of seriousness that adults will find compelling. Iâ€™m also going to give as a gift to teens in my family. They will enjoy reading it and using it as a work book, too. I found the book to be surprisingly helpful for me as well. Anyone looking for ways to get through rough patches in life will find much to use in this terrific read.

This book is in a category of its own and is especially useful for someone like me who works with youth. This book is aimed for teens and the many struggles they face at that delicate time where they pull away from their parents and begin forming attachments to friends and relationships outside of the home which often leads to frustration and heartbreak because their peers have their own battles to fight through. Such is life, but finding ways to address those things makes the transition into becoming ourselves less hectic. Russell uses testimonies from prominent figures and takes chapters from her own life (literally) to put into perspective that the things weâ€™re going through are often fleeting yet necessary to shape who we are and who we will become. She reinforces that we are a result of our experiences no matter how bad are good and that we have a choice of becoming the who we want to be. From bullies to victims to fast and slow learners and to the outspoken or quiet, this book speaks to everyone regardless if we come from broken homes or tight-knit families. The practical approach of using storytelling minced with prompts encourages an interactive self-discovery to consider why we think and feel the way we do and how we might cope with the relative difficulties in our coming of age years into adulthood. Even as an adult I was forced to rethink why I acted the way I did as a kid and how that still influences my relationships). Full disclosure: I had the great fortune of meeting Nicole when she founded Precious Dreams and saw firsthand how she connected with teens who often entered her workshops somewhat jaded (activities are a common requirement for youth in transition) and watched how they lit up during her motivational talks and were excited to discover the things that comfort them and how they can use them to cope. Her work inspired me to form my own organization working with incarcerated youthâ€”many of the things she did with teens inspired what I do with mineâ€”including bringing guest speakers who talk about overcoming and becoming the person they wanted to be (many of those people have testimonies in the book). I additionally was able to bring her into my workshops to share this book and the teensâ€™ feedback is proof that the approach was not only effective but eye-opening for youth who are too often inundated by the prying questions of therapists and counselors. This workbook allows them to work through issues on their own, which is a preferred choice, especially among some of the most traumatized teens. I highly recommend that if you work with youth and are in a position to bring Russell in to present the book, to please do so. Her author talk wasnâ€™t self-promoting but was motivational and held up a mirror for my diverse classroom where students got to identify with challenges they face by simply being who they were born as in this world. I say this not only as Russellâ€™s colleague (in the same line of work) but as someone who cares deeply about youth development and positive reinforcements. â€œNothing is promised in this life (not even relationships); if we donâ€™t learn to love, heal, and cope without being dependent on people or things, weâ€™ll never survive.â€

Nicole Russell has committed herself to her mission and purpose of empowering youth who are in unfortunate conditions due to no reasons of their own. As a result of her mission, she has written a book that address common issues in teens, but in my opinion, also in adults. The reason why I believe it is both applicable for teens and adults is because, whatever childhood issues that are neglected, often journey into one's adult life. If you are a teen, parent of a teen, or an adult who have emotional and/or mental struggles due to childhood pains, I encourage you to get a copy of this book NOW! Three things I want to say about this book. 1) It is REAL! 2) It is RELEVANT, and 3) It is RESOURCEFUL! Do your LIFE a favor and READ this NOW so someone will not have to READ you LATER. -PC

I originally bought this for my little sister who is going through mental health issues (anxiety/depression). After reading just a few chapters, I realized Iâ€™m going to need to order a second copy for her and Iâ€™m keeping this one for myself!!! There are excellent tools in this book to help you understand yourself and navigate lifeâ€™s ups and downs. A MUST BUY!

As a boy, I listened to Merle Haggard from the back seat of our Ford LTD (the color varied, it was always an LTD) on the 8-track. He has always been one of my favorite entertainers. Earlier this year, my wife and I were lucky enough to see him in concert. So much talent packed into one human being is almost unfathomable.I read a lot of biographies and autobiographies, and I can tell you that this one hit me as a bare-knuckled telling of a life. As a lifelong fan, I expected nothing less from the working man's poet. If you want to know about Merle Haggard, this is the book to read.Merle's style of storytelling is well-paced and entertaining. Mixing periods of time within a scene, jumping to the past, then back, is a very tricky thing to pull off (I'm a writer, so I know how hard this is to do well), but Merle makes it seem natural. His style of writing will make you feel like you are sitting and listening to him tell you about his life, and you will be amazed.

This is one of the best autobiographies I have ever read. I have been a Merle Haggard fan for many years, and bought the first book about his life many years ago and liked it a lot. This newer book is more in depth about his life. He was a very interesting person, bad boy turned good man. I hated to see the book end. I bought a copy for my sister for Christmas, and she also loved it. You can learn so much about a person. There are a lot of funny things about his life and also some sad things. He was a very talented man who was able to turn his life around and become a great man who is loved by many.

I enjoyed this autobiography of Merle Haggard. It's Merle's memories of his life and it's very candid.He doesn't gloss over the mistakes he made, particularly in his youth.While he gives a lot of details, he doesn't always mention names and he explains why he chose not to name people in some cases.Mr. Haggard lived an interesting life and he wrote some legendary songs. I wish he would have wrote more about the background on some of his songs- especially "Workin' Man Blues." But he eluded to his gift as a songwriter and he wrote songs mostly about his life experiences.What was most interesting was his material on Roy Nichols, arguably one of the best guitar players of all time. In this book, you get a small glimpse of Roy Nichols as a person.This is a very entertaining read and I recommend it for any Merle Haggard fan.

As a diehard Merle Haggard fan, I was deeply moved by his honesty and openness regarding his life and the mistakes he made along the way. Truly the great American story: a kid that came from nothing who achieved superstar status in the country music industry. Mr. Haggard was the greatest country musician of all time. Rest in Peace!

Absolutely LOVE this book! It's like Merle is sitting here with me and telling me his life story. The writing is so natural. Of course Tom Carter is a talented wordsmith, and he captured the true nuance of Merle in this book.

I love Merle's music, but wasn't thrilled with this autobiography. I think a different writer could have helped him make this more interesting. For me it dwelled too much on his illegal escapades and not enough on the songwriting, touring, family etc. Just didn't hold my attention that well.

A Great look into the life of A Country Music Legend. Everyone has heard his music, and this book brings about his personal stories. After reading, I'm amazed he lived as long as he did. Once you start reading, it's hard to put down.

One of my favorite singer/ songwriters, Merle Haggard has lived an interesting life. While many singers of this genre have recorded classic songs about prison, few have really lived the life they sing about. Haggard is an exception and knows whereof he speaks (sings). Some of Hag's recordings would lead you to believe that he is name arch conservative ( Okie from Muskogee, Working Man Blues) but he actually sounds more progressive when he discusses his political views. He has lived a fascinating life and is still touring and selling out concerts throughout the country. Long live this icon of country music!

Very good product

Its pretty good. A lot of general information. If you are looking for a inside look at club life this isn't your book. If you are looking for something painted with broad strokes crack this one open.

Very lame book. Some of the philosophy is great stuff, but it talks alot about the same ol schit you might see on natural geographic tv shows. I gave it to a friend because it would be an embarrassing addition to my book collection.

Found three obvious errors. First "strike your colors" means to lower your flag, not raise it. .Secondly it mentions someone who was a gunner on B-52s during WW II. B-52s didn't come out till after the war. Thirdly it mentions the AOA the American Outlaw Association as if it were an organisation for all 1% bikers. When in fact it is the official name of the Outlaws MC. Other than that it was an entertaining bit of history.

Bought this book for my husband as he enjoys reading real life biographies. He loved the writing and storyline so muc that he couldnt put it down. lolHe read it in record time and will probably read it again.

Very interesting book. Being an old lady if a 1%er for over 25 years, none of it was new to me. A good read

Most erectile dysfunction can be treated with various cognitive and mindfulness-based therapies, and this book does a good job of summarizing, in plain language, lots of the basics and mechanics of this very treatable and very common problem.

Most of the diary of a man living around the turn of the centuries - late 1700's into early 1800's details the bounty of animals in the woods, fields and swamps at that time in the state of Pennsylvania. Herds of 40 to 100 and more Elk (no less), hundreds nay thousands, even tens of thousands of deer, hundreds of bears, panthers, innumerable beaver etc. to be trapped. There were no limits to quantities taken and no seasons to protect the wildlife. Many families lived on the meat and skins taken, and sold the surplus meat and skins to buy more supplies and subsistence. By today's standards everyone was a poacher, taking all they could. Dogs were always used to chase and harrass the game. Individuals killed hundreds of animals per year! It is no wonder that in 200 years or less, one can walk the woods all day and never see an animal, at least in most of the East and mid-west. We have managed to bring back the whitetails from near extinction with today's game law enforcement. And wild turkeys in the East once again from an almost extinct number still found alive. The dialog and thinking from those olden days is entertaining. It demonstrates how much knowledge of nature and natural remedies, of wild animal habits etc. has been lost on the general population. It is also astounding how far men could walk (sometimes ride if in posession of a horse) over mountains and through swamps in a day to pursue animals or conduct business. They would walk 20-50 miles or more, sometimes taking provisions for several days and camping out under the stars with no tent. One of the amazing revelations was the hundreds of snakes in the woods in those time, a number of kinds of venemous snakes and how men coped with them. Men had lots of knowledge, woodscraft and strength and stamina in those days. A great read if this sounds interesting to you. A number of typos which are common in 99 cent digital translations. Only of slight hesitation, not much of a hindrance.

Okay, I am a little biased because Philip Tomb was my ancestor, BUT...This is a fabulous book! Some people say there are too may hunting stories. I say they are all fascinating. I am amazed how they went about hunting and trapping with limited means (ie. guns and ammuntion). A MUST read for anyone interested in what life was like for our pioneer ancestors.

I used this book for research about pioneers of the Western Pennsylvania area. Although it emphasizes the hunter's obsession with capturing, displaying, and selling live elk, it provided me with a multitude of details about the terrain, weather conditions, means of travel, daily living, and the need for cooperative community work to survive in the wilderness during the 1700s and early 1800s. History buffs should enjoy it. It's very readable. Who knew elk could be trained and used as domesticate animals or that one elk could bring in huge amounts of money and provide so much meat?

Well written reports about hunting and trapping in early Pennsylvania. Just before & after the Revolutionary War. Also interesting descriptions of the Abundant wildlife that was present at that time. And insights on the relationships between farmers and Native Americans. It provides unique first person account of the settlement and early economy of the United States.

Wow. The pioneers of this era were real men in every sense of the word. We hike and pack light weight tents and the latest of food/cooking gear. These fellows thought nothing of walking-running 20 +'miles, eating what they killed, constructing shelters from materials found in the wild, and using instincts to stay alive.If you want "you were there" experiences read this.

Well, it does give you a good feel for hunting life in late 1700's / early 1800's northwestern PA ... but not much else, except for some AWESOME glimpses into the eloquence and bad fortune of the native American Indians in the region at the very end of the book. It is an endless romp through season after season of high volume slaughter of elk, bear, deer, and rattle snakes. I have never killed an animal, but after reading this book, I know where to find them, what their mating seasons are, how to catch an elk, smoke out a bear, and barter for the carcasses. I love journals and autobiographical books, and this was no exception. I would give it 4 starts except for the outrageous number of typos and similar errors, including several pages of text SO glitchy that it could be described as hallucinatory at worst, or like a secret code at worst. There was NO editing or proofing here, folks! But if you like historical, real-life writing, you'll like this a great deal. Sort of.

A good simple book by a good simple man ...... Bragging just a little and apologizing not at all. An honest look at an earlier more " wilderness " time. Also shows some of the excesses of the white man and his tendancy to take more from his environment than he needed thereby damaging it for everyone else.

I found the cohesiveness of the train of thought difficult to follow. Would have hoped for a better organization of thoughts to make for better reading...but I stuck it out for the entire book.

I think a good source book is one which can be used by a storyteller regards of when/where your own story is set. While I could use of the information here for history or for lost artifacts, I was disappointed by the rather sketchy nature of the information in the book. I read this in college in the 90s and it blew my mind. i used to read a lot of pro-black discourse that lead me to think black men needed "saving" (i think that still goes on). This was a refreshing and necessary departure from the norm. Black women's struggle shouldn't be subordinated. "The struggle" isn't diluted by acknowledging black women deal with sexism and racism. I wanted to make sure this title was in my daughter's library as she heads to college. I just gave it to my daughter on her 18th birthday. She's exploring her racial identity, race relations, and power just like I did at her age so I trust her thinking will be greatly expanded as mine was. this is the only title I ever read by bell hooks and i never forgot it. (and no offense but i like the original cover better. that photo would not make me want to read it)

Extrodinary, I can't say enough about this book and I'm not even finished. I totally relate and now I have a better understanding. This book is not for the faint-hearted, it's raw truth. I will be purchasing other works from this author. Bravo bell hooks, Bravo!

This should be mandatory reading. So much of this is still relevant today. Important insights on the black female experience and how mainstream feminism leaves women of color behind.

Of course I would have like more ideas on solutions to the problem and didn't capture my interest all of the time. But I enjoyed it I thought about things I usually don't think about as a black male and just how much truth there is to comments such as "all black women have is themselves" it's hard to ignore some behavior described in this book in real life now. Definitely a great read on a perspective that's often undermined

I had to read this class for my women's studies class. Everyone agreed it's a book that forced everyone to look into themselves about how the U.S. has treated women of African descent for centuries. White men, Black men, and White women have ALL benefited from the sufferings of Black women in the United States. hooks demonstrated her argument very well in this book. As a class, we agreed that hooks is right. Personally, it was very sad to read this book because black women clearly need to be aware of the historical oppression they've been under for decades in the United States. Even though some things have changed for women of African descent, a lot more needs to be done. Everyone who cares about feminism and black women must read this book. The feminist movement has served the interest of white women for too long. It's time white women acknowledge this fact and support black women as well as those from other races. I'm officially a follower of hooks and she is my number one U.S. feminist scholar to date.

Bell Hooks sets the standard for Womanist (black Feminist) literature. It is a must read for any serious scholar in the 21st century.

My mother and I have always wanted to read a book together, partly for personal gain and partly because a few years back my dad and I nearly read the entire Harry Potter Series together when I was in grade school and it made her a little jealous. I am 20 and in college (where I read a lot) and she's 50 and employed and has never been a heavy reader(literally reads mostly magazine articles about interior design). I found that we would often have conversations about race, gender, sexuality and the intersection of these identities that we inhabit daily as black women, but the conversation always felt lacking to me, and I'm sure my mother shared in my sentiments. We read the first 28 pages of this book and the conversation was lightening, finally breathing force and life into every argument we'd ever taken a stance on in family discussions and every conversation we had had but never could find concrete words with which to support. In case she wasn't enjoying the read already (which she thoroughly was), my dad walked in 30 minutes after we started with large eyes and a not so subtle wanting look for inclusion, peeping over my shoulder to discover the title of the work that had us shouting, audibly "oohing and ahhing", and even laughing in the next room... and that there was enough to incite an air of commitment to this roughly 200 page read that I've never seen my mother possess approaching anything but a Spring issue of Veranda. We'll be reading a little bit of this book everyday for the next week or two. It is a very fulfilling, enlightening and self-strengthening read. Thank you bell hooks.
