Review

“Napalm girl” Kim Phuc (Girl in the Picture) gained inadvertent fame as a 1970s antiwar icon when a photographer took a picture of her as she ran naked from a napalm attack in Vietnam. Kim Phuc now provides the story behind the photo, chronicling her idyllic Vietnamese childhood in a prosperous home, the effects of the painful burns across her body, and her personal trials as she traveled from Vietnam to Cuba and then to Canada. Her Christian conversion is central to her journey, and much of the memoir attests to God’s power in her life. Kim Phuc, raised within the CaoDai religion of Vietnam, explains how she found solace in Jesus’s suffering and in the stories of Paul after coming across the New Testament in a Saigon library. Vietnamese “minders” working for the Communist government were a constant presence in her life as officials begin to realize Kim Phuc’s value as “Vietnam’s token propaganda tool.” Although the book’s faith elements are uplifting and Kim Phuc’s descriptions of her conversion are heartfelt, the writing is most lively when she describes her frustrations with the Cold War and its negative impact on her recovery. However, throughout her journey, “marked by distractions, abuses, and false starts,” Kim Phuc exhibits forceful resolve, steely self-determination, and seemingly limitless empathy. This spare and lucid memoir will touch readers of all faiths and nationalities. (Publishers Weekly)

From the Back Cover

More than four decades ago, her excruciating pain was exposed in a photo that made headlines around the world. Only now is she fully revealing the depth of her scarring―to both body and soul. It’s a moment forever captured, an iconic image that has come to define the horror and violence of the Vietnam War: Nine-year-old Kim Phuc running in agony moments after napalm bombs fell from the sky, bringing hellish fire that burned away her clothing and seared deep into her skin.Left for dead in a hospital morgue, Kim miraculously survived―but her journey toward healing was only beginning. When the napalm bombs dropped, everything Kim knew and relied on exploded along with them: her beloved home and village, her country’s freedom, as well as her childhood innocence and happiness. Kim’s coming years would be marked by agonizing treatments for her burns, incessant physical pain throughout her body, and being handled for political propaganda. Kim survived the pain of her body ablaze, but how could she possibly survive the pain of her devastated soul?Fire Road is a story of both unrelenting horror and unexpected hope, a harrowing tale of life changed in an instant. In this stunning first-hand account of struggling to find answers in a world that only seemed to bring anguish, Kim ultimately discovers strength in someone who had suffered himself, transforming her tragedy into an unshakable faith. From the flap (HC edition):“GET OUT! RUN! THEY ARE GOING TO DESTROY THIS WHOLE PLACE!”The soldier’s commands left no room for ambiguity. . . . With us children leading the way, we fled the outbuildings; we ran toward the front of the temple grounds; we made our way from the property onto the adjacent road, Trang Bang’s Route 1; and we pedaled our legs as fast as they could carry us as hell rose up to clutch earth.Seconds later, I caught sight of an airplane closing in on me. It was jolting to take in something so immense, so fast, and so earth-shatteringly loud, and the magnitude of its presence left me paralyzed there on the road. . . . Perhaps I would have stood there for an eternity, my feet unable to move, were it not for what I saw next. The fly-by was not an inconsequential event, for falling from that underbelly were four large ice-black bombs. . . . I knew I had to flee. These were not bombs that fell heavily from the sky, as I had heard that bombs would do; no, these bombs all but floated down. There was something sinister in those cans.“Nooo! Nooo!” I screamed to nobody but the air surrounding me, all of the other children and soldiers having disappeared into the dense clouds of smoke that now encroached. I will die here on this road. I will be taken to death in these flames.

Ms. Kim’s life has been extraordinary since the day napalm burned off one-third her skin off 45 years ago. She has never lived a day since without pain. After the war she was humiliated as a walking propaganda poster by the communists in Vietnam and Cuba. She lived in extreme poverty in Vietnam and Cuba before arriving in Canada in 1982.Her life, after arriving in Canada, has had its share of the ordinary travails of every other family on Planet Earth. Her husband smoked and drank excessively before finding salvation in Christ. Her children drove her crazy with defiance the way everybody else’s kids do, before maturing into Christian adults. She lived in constant pain that drove her to the edge of addiction with painkillers. She lived in constant financial distress because her husband worked at a modestly paid clerical position while she worked as an unpaid speaker for charitable causes. She was cheated out of the money she’d saved for her children’s college by an careless trust fund manager. She thus encountered every ordinary problem of life that gnaws at middle class families in North America, plus the extraordinary physical and mental anguish of being disfigured by war, while tormented by memories of watching her friends and family being killed by the fratricide between Communists and South Vietnamese Government forces. She describes having a blackness inside her spirit that had to be extracted by prayer a little at a time over decades. She experiences searing pain even today, as she travels t Miami to undergo the latest technology of laser beams puncturing her burned skin to allow it to regrow from the inside. She tells her story of miraculous faith in a beautiful way that makes the reader feel that you are right there at her side every day of her life, experiencing the pain of earthly life and the glory of faith, when she often felt the Lord’s presence and heard His voice.Near the end of her book she expresses the essence of her life: “You are an amazing person,” [someone] whispered to me. “It is only the Lord,” I replied. This is one of the most inspiring books of faith I have ever read.

“Fire Road” is a riveting account of a young girl’s journey from the horrible pain of napalm and on to recovery, redemption, salvation, and forgiveness. As a Vietnam veteran, I was familiar with the iconic picture of young Kim running down a road after having been caught up in a napalm strike by a South Vietnamese Air Force plane in 1972 but only had a vague idea as to what her fate had been afterwards. Her memoir shares her journey through treatment in Vietnam, Cuba, and Russia, finding faith as a follower of Jesus, achieving happiness in marriage and family in Canada, and sharing her story as a powerful motivational speaker.Kim had made five important decisions in her life:1. Choose to free your heart from hatred.2. Live a simple, not complicated, life.3. Give more to those in need that you meet.4. Expect less, and you will know less dissatisfaction.5. Walk by faith, and not by fear.We would all do well to reflect on and adopt her “position” on forgiveness, love, and faith.

I know of no one who has suffered more distress than the Napalm Girl. Even today she feels physical pain from her scars every day. At times at 10 on the Pain Scale. But through her foundation she helps thousands of children about the globe. Kim does not feel sorry for herself but shares her story of pain, trials, forgiveness and Blessing. She is a Modern Day Joseph or Job.

Reading this one week after watching Ken Burn’s amazing documentary on the Vietnam War, I feel I have a fuller understanding of life, suffering, pain, forgiveness, faith and hope. Kim Phuc tells her story with courage and strength and reveals an amazing trust in Jesus Christ who met her in her times of need and saved her. There are answers here for those who seek them.

I really liked Fire Road by Kim Phuc Phan Thi. Many people are familiar with the Napalm Girl photo of the Vietnam era, but do not know her story - before and after the photo. This is a well written book, it is not graphic but does provide enough details so you understand what she went through. This book also provides information about her immediate family.I would highly recommend Fire Road to readers who like stories about: Vietnam war, well written non-fiction, Christianity, and wonder what happened to the Napalm Girl.

This was such a lovely read. Kim apologizes for any inconsistencies in her English in the introduction, but I found the writing extremely sweet and easy to digest. You can tell her editor left everything in Kim's words, which makes the book even more powerful. This is an excellent book. If you are in a phase of your life where you are questioning "Why God!?" in the midst of extreme suffering, wondering what all of this is for, READ THIS BOOK. Your suffering is never wasted. Your deepest questions to God about your struggles are heard. Many of Kim's deepest questions of suffering (like being left in a morgue to die for 3 days!) ultimately led to her life being saved, but it was something she did not realized until decades later! Our rejection can be used for good and for our salvation. A wonderful, full circle story of how God used tragedy to bring about great victory and salvation for an entire family. READ!

I joined a book club recently and this book was the one being discussed so I bought it. Very glad I did. Kim had an idyllic childhood in Vietnam until her own country's airplane spread napalm on her village and she was caught and burned by the deadly substance. The story of dealing with constant pain, many skin graft operations and then actually catching up in her schooling is only the first striking perseverance in Kim's life. She was ready to enter university when the communists starting using her story (and her) for propaganda purposes. In the midst of that black misery, God reached down and saved her, literally. For a little girl, who by rights, should never have survived such horrible burns, Kim's triumph over pain and her message of peace and forgiveness is truly inspiring.
