This book has some good information in it but it is not worth the price. I would purchase the kindle version if I could do it over again. I do like having a book in hand so I can make notes or write other info on the pages. What I would suggest to the author and publisher is please PROOFREAD your book and correct the misspelled words and incomplete sentences. This is particularly annoying to me! Not a very thick book so it is a very quick read.

This book helped me understand how to prevent and manage fatty liver disease using natural techniques. It discussed the important basic information such as the different functions of the liver and why it is prone to diseases, the types of fatty liver, and causes and symptoms. I can say that this book has been very well researched and that the author really knows what he has written. I really learned so much from this book and I will share this book and the knowledge I earned here with my family and friends.

I found the book very easy to read and it explained the liver's function very well. I am not going to give 5 stars however because I found a few statements regarding foods to be contradicting. For instance, bananas were mentioned as a fruit to exclude or limit in your diet, but then in the back where a sample diet is given a banana is listed several times as a snack or in a meal.

The worst database reference book I have ever bought! Too much opinion and not enough facts. Definately not geared towards the majority of database practioneers. Don't waste you money on this "reference"

The subtitle to this book is "Terms, Concepts and Examples." It definitely is full of RDBMS terms. I do sympathize with the reviewer who found the language a bit terse and perhaps is a reason to consider the author aloof. I decided to look up "inner join." It was given as a question I received in an interview once. The definition contrasts the "inner" version against the "outer" version, which it then immediately states won't be discussed further (and isn't). I find it a bit challenging to use a term that you won't define as part of a definition for a term that you (supposedly) define...only to be redirected to "Join." However, these are what I consider to be "style" issues more than "substance" issues in the considerable bulk of the content.The examples are a bit esoteric. Under "INSERT" we have a definition that starts out with the word "Loosely." When was the last time that you saw a "regular" dictionary start a definition with the word loosely to describe the generality of the definition?I don't agree that financial success or volumes of units sold indicate the quality of a book. This one could definitely be better in some measurable ways, but how?Remember when you were like in 3rd grade and you weren't allowed to use the "word" as part of the definition? How about "inheritance?" ...with the definition being "Type inheritance." At least even the most abbreviated dictionaries use complete sentences. "relvar" as a word in a definition? When you have to use the dictionary to look up a term in the definition of a term, you know that you're chasing your tail.Reading through this, I feel like I'm being "lectured" on the terminology of the relational database industry by someone who is wound up in it and incapable of putting themselves into the end-user's world. I don't feel embraced by the curtness and apparent aloofness of the definitions and chasing around the maze only to find such meaningful nuggets that include the word as part of the definition...like somebody skipped the 3rd grade altogether and the rest of us were simply too unfortunate to have been brought ahead so eloquently. Take the example of "set level." "The operators of the relational model are all set level, in the sense that they take entire relations or relvars (or both) as operands and either produce entire relations as results or update entire relvars."...okay, can you use that in a sentence? Is "set level" a noun, verb, adjective, adverb or something else? It seems to describe either a model or sets of results (or perhaps both?).So most of us already know some definitions for "set" and for "level" and none of them seem very similar to what we've found above. This kind of "doublespeak" is why I think that a lot of the content comes across as aloof or haughty. Part of this guilt undoubtedly belongs to the form-factor of the book. It is intentionally small and brief. In an effort to map well to the form-factor, I think that a bit of the subtle graces due to the reader went missing.What this book needs is a way to include the "more casual" RDBMS admin/programmer/user rather than provide for the elitist gurus who supposedly already know all of this stuff as well as their names."entity" "A thing." I'm not sure how many of us couldn't live without that bit of insight...)I rate it a bit more toward the middle-ground than perhaps is obvious from my written review because it is always a challenge to please everyone with a book and I sincerely believe that the intent of O'Reilly and the author was well-placed, but perhaps the form-factor gives artificially terse results. True to my "title" for the review, there are a LOT of good definitions and information packed inside the book, but the "not so good" ones do tend to be a bit more obvious than I'd prefer.

I don't care how long you've been in IT... If you get into a conversation with a hard-core data modeler, they will have you lost in language in a matter of 10 minutes or less. If you want to understand the precise terminology and meanings behind the words, this book might be your best short-term bet... The Relational Database Dictionary by C. J. Date.This is similar to an O'Reilly's "Pocket Guide" title, in that it's a small format page design that totals just 113 pages. Included in those 113 pages are over 600 terms and phrases that relate to the world of relational databases. Probably the key thing to take into account here is the author... C. J. Date. Date is an authority in all things relational, so you know you're going to get expert definitions and opinions. The flip side is that Date is very much into the theoretical world of relational technology. Because of that, you get definitions that are very much founded in mathematical terminology and notation. Also, Date is very opinionated, and he has to qualms about giving you those opinions as to whether something is important or not...If you're going to be spending time in the relational database world, you'll need to know this information. It's all packaged up in a concise format that will make it an oft-visited volume. Just don't read through the book thinking this is a "definitions for dummies" approach to the material. You *do* have to think here...

At around 100 pages, 'The Relational Database Dictionary' is one of the shortest books that O'Reilly publishes, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing! So many books are publishes with bloat that it's nice seeing these occasional pocket guides (there certainly aren't a lot of them) that keep the bulk down and the content tight. Folks this book does everything it says it does. It's a dictionary of relational database terms. It's not meant to be a teaching guide or anything extensive. The books assumes that you know (or will know at some point) a bit about what RDBMS are and why you would want to use them. The guide is tailored towards the professional that wants a quick reference on their desk for daily terminology that they might need to look up, or a quick refresher on subjects that they already know about but want to refresh their memory. If you use databases on a daily basis and are an administrator or developer, I think this is a fine reference to have on your desk. If you are looking for a LEARNING book this isn't what you are looking for. It's best described as a companion book and I think it accomplishes that niche goal just fine.**** RECOMMENDED

Martin, The Clean Coder is one of these books I wish had fallen in my hands way before they did.There are many other books that teach you how to write good code - that is not the purpose of this book. Rather, Uncle Bob strives to show you how to be a good professional, and all that entails. If the concept makes you want to sneer, don't - there are lots of behaviors that we'd normally do which are not professional and hurt both your company as yourself. Have you ever said "yes" when pressed to commit to an unreasonable deadline? Pushed half-done work through? Given overly optimistic estimations that people thought of as deadlines? Felt forced to wade through a mess of (partly) your own making? Well, even if you haven't, odds are that you will at some time, as (sadly) every developer finds themselves at such situations at some point during this career. What this book aims to do is to help you identify these situations, explain why these are harmful and provide you with the tools to better respond to these. Oh, and of course, expect the usual useful insight on how to improve your programming practices.While Clean Code was a bit hard to read sometimes and made you stop every now and then, if only to get a better grasp of the concepts, this one feels so relatable that it reads in a breeze. What more can you ask for?Our craft would be a lot better if every programmer was given a copy of this before they started working. Or at the very least, I am certain that this book has helped me become a better professional and I expect its teachings will continue to do so.

I accidentally ordered this instead of clean code (based on a word of mouth recommendation).I decided to read it anyway, since it was by the same author.Terrible advice. I stopped reading at the part when he suggests a 60 hour work week. Even if the extra 20 are "professional development" hours, this is awful, unsafe advice that is more a recipe for burnout and stress-related illnesss than it is a powerful career as a professional. A real professional sees their fiduciary responsibility to both the customers and their employeer to deliver a _sustainable_ flow of _quality_ work every week.He goes on to rationalize this point of view by opining that a professional doesn't expect any help (in terms of financial assistance or work hours) from their employer for professional development - and if they do get it they should be so groveling at their employeers feet in thanks.Again, no. A true professional knows that a company that leans on its knowledge workers desperately needs those workers to stay current and will work to change the culture at their workplace if the organization is not providing time for professional development in a way that satisfies and also-necessary sustainable pace!With advice this bad in the first chapter, I couldn't afford the time to finish it. In my opinion "Rework" by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hanssonmuch is a much better, more-modern book on the subject.

This book is filled with anecdotes, hypothetical conversations, but mostly filled with different ways to say "be responsible." Any scenarios he gives are either too fabricated to be believable (please never write dialogue again) or so focused on taking responsibility that he dodges actual tricky issues. A lot of statements he makes you know he doesn't believe but thinks the hyperbole is going to give you an "aha" moment. It won't. The biggest disaster is saying a professional programmer would crack open their checkbook and reimburse the company for any money lost due to a bug in their code. I defy you to find where he ever admits to doing that, ever. This is the man who brought the wrath of the Teamsters down on his company due to a bug. He may not have been professional then, but he's not saying how he'd do anything different, either.He preaches the gospel of test driven development, but brushes off prohibitively long compile times as being the programmer's fault, admits that 10% of his own codebase isn't covered by his tests (though he tries to shift blame to someone else and believes the percentage, although not 100%, is better than 90. Take responsibility, dude), and often says "there are exceptions" without pointing out what the exceptions would be. Those are more important than spending 30 pages repeating yourself on the rules. Why is ~10% of that codebase not tested? What's an example of a "dogma getting in the way of productivity" the discerns the difference for someone that thinks coding a test for every trivial piece of code is, in fact, getting in the way?On making commitments he has some good advice about saying no and giving realistic estimates on the time it will take to complete things. The author does not, however, give real advice on how to deal with a boss that will not accept "no" or a timeline that does not meet their expectations. How does the professional programmer deal with "you'll do this by tomorrow or you're fired" when she knows it will take 4 days? How does the professional programmer deal with a negative performance evaluation that says he is not productive enough, even though he met all the commitments he made, but not on a timetable the manager wanted to see?There are no answers in this book, just preaching. And not good preaching, it's the kind where the preacher gives a firey sermon about adultery when you know he's sleeping with the choir director's wife. I was hoping for a software engineer's guide to soft skills in the workplace and how to approach team interactions more effectively. Instead I found out i'm not going to be a professional. But that's okay, neither is Bob.

I think I read this book many years later after starting my career as a software developer. I wish I read this when I was younger so I could perform better and in a more professional way. This book has been a breakthrough in my professional life. It opened my eyes in regard with of taking responsibility of my actions as a software engineer. It for sure had helped me to grow up as a person and as a professional.

And when her new world crashes around her, she opens her heart to her home, and to a deep, respectful love of a visiting pastor. To give him the ultimate gift, she befriends Dicey Tillerman, and in doing so, gives herself and her family a gift they could not have foreseen.Voigt’s characters are always impeccably written, and true deep down in their very cores. Fans of “Dicey’s Song” will love watching the way the plots of the books interweave, and how Voigt illuminates the inner workings of Mina’s motivations. There are certainly plot lines that might leave some scratching their heads - How exactly are we supposed to read Mina's relationship with Tamer Shipp? - but Voigt has never pretended that life can be wrapped up in a neat package and topped with a bow. I was pleasantly surprised by this book and it was a perfect addition to the series!

This book in Voigt's Tillerman cycle isn't as powerful as DICEY'S SONG or A SOLITARY BLUE, but it holds its own with the the others. The only book in the cycle with an African-American narrator, like A SOLITARY BLUE, COME A STRANGER offers an outsider's perspective on the close-knit Tillerman family. Well worth reading.

I read (and loved) the entire Tillerman Series Novels when I was in junior high. This year, I decided to read them again, and I'm so glad I did. I feel like I have a completely new appreciation for the books as an adult. "Come A Stranger" is about Mina, one of Dicy's friends. It deals a lot with being black about 100 years after slavery ended in America. Cynthia Voigt does an incredible job of truly letting the reader in to the emotions of the characters. It's also very unique how each book in the series doesn't necessarily go in order of time. She takes you into the lives of characters who are related to the Tillerman children, and then you see how their lives intertwine. She is building a much bigger story, with a unique look inside many different characters. These books are truly fantastic literature. I highly recommend them to junior high students and adults alike.

I was a resident of HK for 3 and a half years before the handover. I remember speaking to some obnoxious Australian "journalist" at Christmas time 1996-97 who was absolutely convinced that the Chinese army was going to invade HK and that there would be a Tiananmen Square-style bloodbath. This guy had been sent from Australia to report on the build-up to the hand-over and was simply not interested in hearing any opinions that did not fit into his doomsday nonsense. At the time I was finishing off an MPhil in pol sci at HKU, but this was of no interest to our journo "expert"! I also remember watching the appaling coverage on CNN with some ridiculous American "journalist" making the most innane comments and getting it all wrong. He had obviously been flown in from the States a week before June 30 and was now "the expert" on the handover. I also remember him making continual petty digs at the British. Anyway, what I am saying is that if this book is about exposing the "instant experts" that popular journalism creates and about showing up the pathetic parachute journos (from whom most people get their info from - scary!) then it is an excellent venture and I'm going to buy it!
