I've used this book more than 10 times now. Very detailed on directions to not only find the trailhead, but great directions on hiking too. Measurements for distance are accurate, and if you follow the directions in the book, you'll find your way better than the signs on the roads and trails. And example for hiking in a state park, the sign at the entrance said to park in a particular space to hike, and the book said just go straight ahead at the entrance. I spoke to the camp host, and well, they forgot to take their sign down, the book was more correct. Well worth the purchase price, even if you think you know where you're going. Found a better new route with the book, after hiking a trail several times before I'd bought the book. And remember please, pack out what you pack in.
The amount of hikes in this area is overwhelming, but this book did a good job explaining them and instructions were clear. Would have like to have had info on rules for dogs in each area.
Good overview of the hikes around the area but you can get all the information online or through the local organizations that are within the area.......they have websites and pictures of the conditions if the photos are recent and reviews. The book is good for general determination of where you may want to go but online gives more specifics.
This is a very useful guide to an excellent hiking area. California has such varied topography, with many wonderful areas to hike, but the landforms in the Santa Barbara area are among the most magical and interesting. This guide gives a quite complete overview, with enough detail that one can make choices among the possibilities.

Even the cover of the guide feels good to the touch and is washable, lending itself to being carried on the trail.I have visited, lived in, and hiked around the Santa Barbara area for 40 years, and it is amazing how much I have learned from this book. Unexplored territory, nooks and crannies, nature-lore, and historical references add even more depth and breadth to the excellence of this thorough publication.An astounding manual, reflecting the hard work and intense dedication of its author.A must-have for hiking around Santa Barbara!
