While he scrupulously refrains from guessing what Rowling herself believes indeed, he strangely fails to cite her public affirmation that she is a member of the Church of Scotland and had her daughter christened there he is eager to unearth the distinct, if perhaps residual, Christian underpinnings of Rowling's moral universe. In her stark treatment of good and evil, her account of moral development and even her approach to magic (which he argues is more a literary device than the central interest of her writing), Bridger sees parallels between Rowling's world and that constructed by Christian faith. He reads Rowling with some sophistication, especially in his penultimate chapter, which offers some intriguing guesses about the shape of the series as a whole and the changing role of magic within it. It is extremely well written -- and is as readable and enjoyable as the HP books themselves.'A Charmed Life' is divided into 5 long chapters, plus a shorter 6th with conclusions, and the long chapters are helpfully broken by mid-chapter headings. These chapters give an indepth look at some of Rowling's favorite issues, such as:(1) actions have consequences,(2) beware of the deceitfulness of appearances [a major lesson in LOTR],(3) the target audience [first, JKR herself; second, those that like an exciting mystery], and I might add parenthetically, when Jo Rowling is interviewed, she constantly insists that her books are written for older teens and adults.(4) the world view -- what you see is not all there is, [helpful to the Christian](5) the complicatedness of the moral world -- when things aren't exactly black and white,and (6) periodic comparisons with 'The Chronicles of Narnia', LOTR, and Lewis Carroll's works.Bridger looks at the issues of faith, fact, and truth, as portrayed by Jo Rowling, and finds much that is compatable to the way Christians are to think and believe.'Charmed' is a helpful book to those who want to think carefully about these things.To those who like their conclusions given to them, it is not so helpful.

Before we Christians attack the use of the word magic in these great texts, we must first attend to these texts as literature, and must learn how to understand how to read all of Potter's tales, present and future, in the context of a great tradition of fantasy writings.Yes, these books are rousing tales but any book which creates the kind of sensation as these must also be speaking deeply to our present society. Bridger explains these deeper truths and messages in their appropriate context, and makes re-reading Potter that much more enjoyable and worthwhile. Plus, he is a very engaging author himself, whose nonfiction prose is almost as engaging as Rowling's.This is a very fair, erudite, interesting study of what is arguably the most influential literature of this generation. Being spiritual does not mean we can turn off our minds, blindly accepting what various gurus tell us to believe. Nor is christophobia a reason to deny the importance of studying great literature, at all the levels which makes great literature great.If you are interested at all in the Potter phenomenon this is the one book, besides Rowling's, you should get. No, this book may not interest everyone, and those who rate this present book low without reading it themselves are guilty of the same ignorant prattle which afflicts many of those in the Christian world. We all can and should think, and should discuss intelligently cultural issues before us. Bridger aids immensely and succinctly in this particular discussion.

He is afflicted by Parkinson's and his marriage has disintegrated. Ruiz is a retired copper from the Met. He and O'Loughlin's paths crossed in the past and they make an exceptional team, the one blunt and physical, the other more cerebral and frail.In Bleed for Me Joe's daughter's best friend has been accused of murdering her father. She appears to be the victim of abuse, perhaps at the hands of her father, perhaps at the hands of a charismatic but unctuous teacher. Simultaneously, Joe's wife Julianne is translating (literally) at the trial of three skinhead types, accused of firebombing the home of a family of asylum seekers. As Joe investigates, it appears that the cases are related, principally because of the appearance of a prison-tear-tattooed thug called 'the crying man'.This is a long book, but the pages fly by, even though much of the plot is character-driven and the atmospherics are very textured. Robotham combines the British (Val McDermid, e.g.) tendency toward more leisurely narratives, filled with description and undergirded by a strong sense of place with the more urgent ethos of the American crime and suspense novel. While that appears to be a contradiction, readers of Robotham will know what I mean. He manages to capitalize on the strengths of each narrative style.While the plot of Bleed for Me is complex, the narrative is easy to follow, the characters are clearly differentiated and the ending is very satisfying, though the mood is somber and world-weary. This is top crime fiction. If you have not yet discovered Michael Robotham, prepare for a wonderful experience.

Michael Robotham can write a gripping suspense novel. He proved this in Lost and Shatter. He can also write a mediocre novel as in The Suspect. He can also miss the mark as in The Night Ferry and this novel, Bleed For Me. This roller coaster ride is frustrating, makes me want to read every odd book in the sequence. This reminds me of the San Francisco Giants, who can win a World Series only every even numbered year.Bleed For Me is too cliched. The teenager who is a cutter, the drama teacher who seduces girls, the last minute heroics of the main character, Joe O’Loughlin. The story lacks consistency as one minute Joe can hardly move, then we find him chasing down somebody. The late revelation of how is daughter is involved nullifies Joe’s supposed ability to figure things out.The police reluctance to dig as deeply as they should stretches believability, but does allow our hero to do his work. The cover has a quote from the San Francisco Chronicle that says, “A novel that appeals as both a thriller and a literary read…” The lack of surprises makes it difficult to call this a thriller and while Robotham can write, this is far from being literary.This one gets two stars, and I can only hope the next novel in the series is a thrill ride.

My first Joe O’Loughlin book, on the heels of a text from my daughter, who usually lets her 6 yr old daughter pick a book out from the library for “mommy to read”. I’m sure she was imagining herself running like the girl on the cover of Bleed For Me.I don’t know how we’ve missed these books! Joe’s wife wants independence from Joe; Joe’s early-teen daughter wants independence from her parents; she also wants her baby sister to give her privacy; her best friend is sexually advanced, she cuts herself, has daddy issues and an emotionally absent mom; she also has an aggressive older brother, and a sister who was put permanently in a wheelchair by a boy that beat her when she put popcorn on his head.Joe is in the beginning years of Parkinson’s, so he doesn’t really see patients, but teaches at the local college; he is also asked to “help” on a murder investigation by police. However, I wondered all through the book why they asked for his help, because they treated his conclusions like opinions and his opinions like superstitions.Luckily, Joe has friends. He has friends, because he’s only mildly narcissistic (for a highly intelligent, successful man), just a trifle depressed about his failing health-marriage-family-career-future (like most of themselves, the Irish); and he’s humble. His life is far from perfect and he struggles for that balance between happiness and fruitfulness. He works hard to not judge others, even as he loses his temper, like anyone else (without a degree in psychology) who should know how to CONTROL HIMSELF.I really look forward Joe’s growth in life, but first, I have to catch up and see how he got this far!

Catherine S. Neal is an Associate Professor of Business Ethics and Business Law in the Haile/US Bank College of Business at Northern Kentucky University. She is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati College of Law where she was a Corporate Law Fellow. Neal does a good job of outlining the background of Tyco in the Kozlowski era and prior. This sets the stage for much of the confusion that lead to Kozlowski's conviction. Others in prior reviews have outlined much of this and I don't need to rehash it here. What I found enlightening was that in 2 trials, with 24 jurors, there was only 1 juror who appeared to have the frame of reference and experience to begin to understand the issues involved in the case. She was a hold out for acquittal in the first trial when it ended in a mistrial. So much for a jury of your peers.In the end, Kozlowski was convicted for, among other things, stealing paintings for which he paid. These were purchased properly and paid for by Kozlowski in what was the normal course of business for an executive at Tyco. Tyco's board had approved of using company personnel to manage the personal affairs of the CEO & CFO so that they did not have to worry about those affairs and could focus on growing the business. This was an accommodation that preceded and continued into Kozlowski's tenure as CEO. While this resulted in sloppy processes that were confusing to follow, PWC audited these accounts annually to ensure that they were properly accounted for and that personal funds paid for personal activities. There were no audit issues in this, or any other area of PWC's audits.The takeaway for me was that our system of jurisprudence is not really capable of providing a jury of people who could understand the issues at bar and fully evaluate the claims of the prosecution. Neal makes a great case, based on the evidence from company records, court records and interviews of Tyco and other personnel, that Kozlowski was wrongly convicted. While she did not necessarily convince me of his actual innocence, she certainly did expose a justice system that in no way closed the deal beyond a reasonable doubt, which is the standard in a criminal trial. Based on Neal's work, which is highly referenced to source documents, it appears that Kozlowski was wrongly convicted.An additional piece of info was that there were interview notes between Tyco lawyers and their board members that may have contained exculpatory information and even when appealing to 2 levels of NY State courts and 2 levels of federal courts, the courts refused to compel production of these notes to the defense.Finally, our unnamed British friend (a prior reviewer) appears to have significant reading comprehension issues. There is nobody arguing that the shower curtain was not purchased by Tyco. It was purchased by a Tyco-employed decorator, charged to Tyco and put in a shower in a Tyco-owned apartment. Both the apartment and curtain were recorded assets on the books and records of Tyco. What I found interesting and of note in this part of the story was the budget the decorator was given. She had millions of US$ to decorate an apartment. While the apartment was used to negotiate M&A deals out of the view of the press, this seems excessive, not criminal, but excessive nonetheless. This goes to the inadequate oversight provided by Tyco's board.

I am not a fan of Tyco's leader . However after reading this book it does appear that Dennis was misrepresented in the press and it resulted in a witch hunt that took a very long time to prosecute After reading the book, it seems that dennis was prosecuted more by bad press and betrayed by his board for reasons of self protection. He may have been guilty of some poor decisions But I do not think it met the level of criminal deeds. If anything, it is the board that should have been prosecuted. About that famous shower curtain, he never bought it , his decorator did , and he never saw it.

As a retiree of Tyco Fire & Security, a Tyco holding I am personally grateful that the truth has finally risen to the surface. I first met Dennis Kozlowski in 1978 (approx) and worked for Tyco for almost 38 years. I have NEVER know Mr. Kozlowski to be other than straightforward, honest, and a CEO who genuinely cared for his top performing employees. He put the carrot in our grasp, and it was up to each of up to grab it through hard work and dedication. As far as I am concerned he will always be the single most influential CEO of my time and a man who ran a Fortune 100 Corporation with the share holders best interest at the forefront. S. Vieira

This is a story of a perfect storm and shows how elements can combine to ruin even the most successful people. It shows how - especially in a "democracy" - rules can be bent to go after someone who - at the moment - has become unattractive to the majority. It shows the incredible power of government, with unlimited tax payer funded resources, to persecute and prosecute anyone unfashionable. Today, being rich is unfashionable unless you're a movie star or athlete.I bought this book because I saw an interview with the author. It is obvious Catherine Neal is no apologist for Kozlowski. But you cannot read this book and not be outraged by flaws in the legal system. If anyone should have gone to prison, it was DA Morganthau.An excellent read. Every American should read this book.

Not that I have any personal knowledge but the whole situation never made any sense. What a great job Ms Neal did in exploring the details and following the many media hype stories and shedding some real light on the subject.Most any rational person would have to easily conclude that a person who took a company from $23mil to over$30bil had to be doing something right. Shame on the weak Board to first suggest he didn't have an employment contract based on performance after paying him on that basis for many years. That was the poorest example of a corporate Board. They all should be in jail for what they did to Dennis after what he did for the Tyco.Perhaps the single person within the company who should go to jail would be Patty Pure the head of HR who knew the details and lied on the stand and was bought off by the ridiculous NY State DA--what a joke-I only wish he could spend a few night in jail!

Interesting perspective on the Tyco verdict. It seems like a defense of Kozlowski. Not sure if this is believable. You be the judge.

Having been tangentially involved with the subject at the time, I was fascinated and surprised at the author's conclusion. Made me really think and re-examine my preconceived conclusions. Excellent read.

Kindle edition I purchased and downloaded only had like two pages in it. Publisher or Amazon needs to fix. Beware purchasing this for Kindle at or after date of this review. Recommend you try the sample first or something.This was the first Kindle book I ever had to ask for a refund on. That bad.
