At long last, the eagerly-anticipated finale to the Extinction Cycle. I was very glad to finally be able to get my hands on this (Oh, the hardships of waiting for the author to write, then edit, a new book!) and dig in.And I was not disappointed. Not one bit. It was really good to get back in touch with Reed, Kate, Horn, Fitz and Rachel. Can't say I was as pleased to be reaquainted with some of the other characters, but I suppose villains must have their moments. I didn't do a re-read of the previous book prior to picking this one up, so I did have to stop and think a few times at the beginning about just where the previous book had left off - but that was my own fault for not being prepared. Smith gave an adequate account to recall events to my memory, and that was all that he needed to do. I actually found it fun to be reminded of where things were at. One of the hazards of reading a lot of books. Also, huge kudos to Smith for not dropping a single thread. This story is very complex, with action taking place all over the Northern Hemisphere between Alaska and Rome, and each story line was tightly controlled and clearly related.The quality of writing in this book was of a very high standard, and exactly what I've come to know and expect from Smith. The storytelling too was exemplary - Smith certainly likes to keep us on the edges of our nerves! But then, what would a Smith book be if that wasn't the case?Overall, a MUST read for Extinction Cycle fans, and if you like post-apocalyptic fiction mixed with military action, biomedical disaster and some (highly-plausible, thus scary) science fiction, then do pick up Extinction Horizon, the first in the series. A solid five stars from me.Thank you for the wild ride!!

I need to start this review with some honesty. This is the first Extinction Cycle book that I've read... You see, I've happily enjoyed the performance of Bronson Pinchot throughout the first 6 installments--- so this was a new experience for me. (I found myself trying to do Mr. Pinchot's voices in my head while reading and it made me appreciate him even more). Back to Extinction War-this book is the best piece of art Nicholas Sansbury Smith has produced to date. There are so many examples throughout this story that had me reacting out loud, but it felt like War produced that effect every other page! I've spoke in other reviews about NSS' amazing ability to develop characters but I now see this is where he truly shines. These characters felt like family far before this point, and Smith beautifully (and painfully!) keeps the reader's heart in an constant state of frenzy regarding their fate. When I realized I was nearing the end of the book, I slowed my pace to a crawl, not wanting the story to to end. This proved fruitless-I needed this story more than Flathmann needs his booze. The last several chapters of the story provided tears, fist pumps, and a desire for more. Thank you for this story, Mr Smith. It was a HELL of a ride!

NicholascSansbury Smith is at it again, another blockbuster of a read. Team Ghost headed by Master Sargeant Fitzpatrick is at it again. The Variants are continuing to evolve and they never know what type of beast they will be fighting. Hero’s pop up everywhere, under a Cathedral in Italy, aboard naval ships and in the safe zones. Captain Rachel Davis puts it all on the line to defeat ROT. And of course Captain Reed Beckham must leave Dr. Lovato behind to go forth and fight for the very survival of mankind. This book is an absolute must read, so pick up your copy now to continue to follow Team Ghost. Hopefully Nicholas will continue the story of Fitz, Beckham, Lovato and all the rest of the gang.

Is it wrong for me to say I hope this isn’t the real end of the story?I loved this series, from start to finish. I laughed, cried, shouted and cheered. The characters all feel like friends at this point and I hate the idea of not visiting with them again.Reed’s strength and determination are impossible not to root for, his love for Kate and their unborn son keeps him fighting against impossible odds. Kate once again fighting her own scientific war with Reed her strongest motivation. Rachel Davis, mourning for all those she lost while continuing her fight to bring down Woods at any cost. Fitz fighting an almost impossible war on foreign soil against enemies that keep evolving into harder foes, his determination leading him and Team Ghost on. Ringgold fighting to save our country from a threat even worse than the Variants, always fighting to do what is right. These people are our heroes for good reason. They aren’t perfect, they live with regrets, but they always strive to do what’s best.The action is non-stop, the twists and turns dizzying and this, the final ride, is the most epic ride of them all!

This book is a must have for enthusiasts and interested scholars. The book is filled with many pictures, illustrations and original renderings of Disneyland, and the subsequent other parks. The conceptual development of the original Disneyland is the main focus of the book that admirably discusses the many details involved in the process. The amazing part for me is the scholarly research, and the well written quality of the text. The subject is well examined for the volume of information it covers. It is the first book I have come across that credit's Walt Disney's innovative process of applying film set design to a real 3D environment using an over-ridding narrative to connect it all. The scholarly research by art historians and architects for the Canadian exhibition is impressive, which is done without the control of the Disney Corporation. The scholarly nature of the book lends a new dimensionality to the understanding of Disneyland as an innovative artistic development, and a new architectural expression.Unlike other texts I have read about Disney architecture, this one takes on the subject from the art historical perspective examining the process that creates a new architectural form. Other books seem to veer away from this in favor of the new, celebrated corporate architecture at Disney company headquarters, or the replication of the model at newer Disney parks. By concentrating on the original development of Disneyland as a unique architectural concept of Walt Disney's, and his special team of designers, the idea is established as creating the foundation for everything else that comes after. This difference is insightful, and makes the understanding of the original design clearer and more significant.I highly recommend this book for the wealth of information it provides, and the good read it is. Even for a seasoned Walt Disney enthusiast, like me, it provides a new awareness of the multi-dimensional qualities of the form created, and it makes a rich addition to information previously unknown.

This is a wonderful book for those Disney fans who want to know more about the history of the Disney Theme Parks. There are a lot interesting pictures; some never even seen. Very well detailed and interesting reading. All of those 'curious-types' should buy this book!

Next to "Gardens of the Walt Disney World resorts" this is the best serious Disney book that I've read. Goes into great detail on the design of the parks. This is for the Disney adict who is interested in architecture and design.

The book is really very well researched, thoughtfully observed, and beautifully laid out. Brings critical attention to a vastly important, largely invisible subject.

Adam Hamilton is the pastor of a mega Methodist Church in Kansas City. He has written several books which are insightful bible studies. As a veteran Presbyterian minister who is now retired I have been recruited to teach a study on Exodus in my local church. This book has been very helpful in my enjoyable assignment! Hamilton's book was written to accompany a CD he has produced in which the author visits many of the sites connected with the story of Moses and the liberation of the Israelites from captivity in Egypt, escape across the Reed Sea and their eventual arrival in what is today Israel. The book is easy to read, has many maps and is good on applying the life lessons learned by Moses and the children of Israel to our lives in the modern world. I recommend this book and hope to read more books by Hamilton. The book also contains many pictures taken by the author on his tour of the Middle East.

People like a story and this is a powerful story when one reads it in its entirety rather than listening to parts of it during Sunday Scripture readings and not completely seeing the whole picture. The story of Moses is of utmost importance to the OT and is referenced a great deal in the NT. In some ways, the story parallels the life of Jesus. This book puts everything together: the places where it happened, historical references, the Bible, and how it's relevant today. It gives thought for reflection on various issues such as the Ten Commandments, leadership, moral dilemmas, etc. It presents the story in such a way that it mirrors our own lives.

Adam Hamilton hit another home run. This book brings the story of Moses to the lay reader in a way that is easy to understand and grasp the it as never before. Coupled with the dvd, it makes a great resource for group discussion.

I love Hamilton's books. They are always well researched and thought out while also being accessible and easy to read. They are inspiring and thought provoking. This was no different. If you want to know more about Moses, this is a good place to start .

I love the way Adam Hamilton mixes the video of these very real places with the Biblical stories we know. He is able to merge the past and present with Biblical context. "Moses" was enlightening. Our class enjoyed this journey over the summer.

I have read many of Adam Hamilton's books, as well as using his studies at church. This is a very short but thorough study of Moses that also sent me researching some of the information that was presented. The DVD showing the places Adam traveled that Moses had also probably viewed was also valuable.

Alexander Hamilton does a great job explaining but also visited with great video accompaniment we studied the Holy Land areas Moses and followers walked, lived, prayed following the exodus from Egypt.

I thought I knew all about Moses, but I learned tons of stuff from this book. It would be very good for an adult study group, and in fact, I plan to use it.

Swensen's book is a must-read for endowment managers and other institutional investors, particularly those who take a fund-of-funds approach (as does Yale, where Swensen is Chief Investment Officer). Swensen aptly lays out the investment policy that has enabled Yale to consistently outperform other U.S. endowments. As Yale's CIO, Swensen has set a target portfolio allocation that departs significantly from the still heavily U.S. equity and debt-focused strategy of most endowments. Swensen's approach includes a large allocation to asset classes that are not highly correlated to the U.S. public equity market. He outlines these "alternative" classes in his book, giving the reader an excellent view of how alternative investments can increase risk-adjusted portfolio returns.Perhaps the biggest contribution of Swensen's book, however, is the debunking of myths that still lull fiducaries into making the wrong decisions, for example when it comes to picking investment managers. Swensen advises against chasing managers who have performed well simply because of their past performance. If attributes such as personal integrity and the right fee structure are lacking, solid past performance can become a liability, not an asset. Swensen describes the example of private equity firm KKR-- after tremendous early successes, the flood of investor capital into KKR enabled the firm's partners to set up a fee structure that ensured big payoffs for themselves even if their funds underperformed. This is just one of many valuable lessons the reader will draw from Swensen's book.

Swensen's framework for Endowment Managment remains a thoughtful and clearly articulated look at institutional best practices.A key lesson of his is often overlooked. Each institution is unique, and should not attempt to copy what has been at Yale or other successful investment programs.I would love Swenson to write another book, but my best guess is it would be very similar to the original masterpiece.

Pioneering Portfolio theory is a must read. As other reviewers have said it's essential for any endowment manager. However, it's also a great read for those not interested in asset management. Besides being a fantastic overview of different asset classes and how to think about them, Swensen talks at length about alignment of incentives, how to balance the qualitative and quantitative, and how differing timeframes influence your decisions. All of which are huge components of the decisions anyone makes that often aren't thought about rigorously.

This is an excellent book about the workings of an institutional portfolio and the various influences pulling at investment decisions.Lots of good anecdotal stories of mis-steps by *other* institutions. I would love to hear about some mistakes that DS has made during his tenure.He deals implicitly w/ agency issues that exist in most money management situations. For a more detailed explication of agency conflicts, read, "Unconventional Success".He attributes a lot of manager success to luck. However, how much of DS's and Yale's success is due to luck? He does not subject his own performance (that of managing the managers) to any sort of benchmark.Finally, he gives very short shrift to the back-office and operational issues (1 page at the end of the book). This is the achilles heel of 80% of management firms. They cannot scale, control, and maintain quality as they grow. This is the same, "Its all in the front office" mentality that presages so many other stumbles into mediocrity (not blow ups - just a benign drift downwards in rankings). I hope this same fate does not befall DS and Yale.

The marketing/techno-speak of the investment management industry sometimes gets to be overwhelming, this book can be an antidote. Swensen focuses on policy objectives, manager incentives, relative market (in)efficiencies and fundamental asset class characteristics to write a valuable resource for anyone considering the plethora of modern-day investment vehicles. Practically every concept is explained in language that is intelligible to someone with a basic understanding of the current investment markets. Absolutely worth the purchase.

I have recommended this book to numerous colleagues at work. We use it as a great summary of our investment philosophy and as a touchstone for investment values and sanity checks. We have purchased mutiple copies which we give to stakeholders to spread the word and bring them up to speed with these investment truths.I've been a professional f.m. for 25 years and I wish I'd read this book closer to year 1 than year 25.BTW we got far less incremental value out of Swensen's second book

I still don't know how Ahmed pulled off a book that feels viscerally plausible and still hopeful, but it's a masterpiece and I want it on every shelf in America.

Do you silently accept it? Do you plan to escape? What if your family and you didn’t agree on how to proceed. Strength and confidence in oneself and beliefs are put to the test.This book moved me, I was crying at the end and cringed at the hatred some characters spewed. That fictional conversation made today’s horrifying events and beliefs more real. Thank you for a thought provoking and well-done book.

So, I was reading this book and then midterm elections came and I just...stopped. The book was just too prophetic and I needed to maintain some sort of hope.A couple of days after the elections were (sort of because recounts) ended, I picked it up again.This is an excellent and all too timely novel.Ahmed brings our country's 'Nationalism' and, frankly, Anit-Muslim Fear to the next very believable level. What if our government decided to put all of our Muslim citizens in camps? And how does one girl fight this and maybe even inspire a revolution?It's likely not going to change the minds of any stuck-in-their-ways adult readers, but the book can have an impact on younger readers, entreating them to look past all the nonsense on the news and, unfortunately, the things they're hearing in their own living rooms, and maybe realize that our Muslim friends and neighbors are just like us.At a minimum, it may inspire people to speak up instead of staying silent when they see discrimination happening.The book is a mix of sad and hopeful. And it's all too possible. I didn't like the America portrayed in this book and I hope we never again go this far.Read it.

As Samira Ahmed says in her Author’s Note to the magnificent YA novel “Internment”, this is not a dystopian story. It is set about “fifteen minutes” into America’s future, but is deeply rooted in our history. As the story unfolds, the recently-elected president with Fascist inclinations is in the process of establishing internment camps to incarcerate Muslim Americans who are deemed a threat to National Security. The first, a “model camp” named Mobius, is set (perhaps not coincidentally) in close proximity to the Historic Site of Camp Manzanar, one of the places to which Japanese Americans were relocated during WWII.As the story opens, the narrator-protagonist Layla, a high school senior who has recently been suspended from school for publicly kissing her boyfriend David, breaks curfew to rendezvous with him. Shortly thereafter, “men in dark suits”, accompanied by the local police and heavily-armed, khaki-uniformed “Exclusion Guards” arrive at their door. They accuse Layla’s father, a recently-fired college professor, of writing seditious material (he’s a poet). The family is given 10 minutes to pack belongings, herded onto a train with other detainees, and shipped to Camp Mobius.What is truly brilliant about Ahmed’s writing is her depiction of the “modern version” of a concentration camp. The housing is “Mercury Homes” – recycled FEMA trailers – rather than barracks. Families are housed together, but as it turns out, the internees, though all Muslim, are ethnically separated, so Layla’s family are in a “Block” with other people of Pakistani background. The obvious intention is to isolate and separate people, although the camp slogan is “UNITY. SECURITY. PROSPERITY.” The trailers are equipped with closed-circuit TV and live-streaming monitors. In addition to the numerous armed guards and the electrified and razor-wire-topped fence surrounding the camp, there are continuously-flying drones by day and searchlights by night. Although there are minimal cooking facilities in the homes, internees are required to gather once daily in the Mess for a (not very appetizing) cafeteria-style meal. Other rations are doled out grudgingly, and each individual is allowed a metered 5-minute shower daily. Clearly, although the physical conditions are less harrowing than those experienced by Jews in Germany (or even Japanese in America) in the 1940’s, prison is prison, and complete abrogation of Civil Rights is abominable.Most insidious of all, of course, is that control is maintained by the sadistic megalomaniac Director by continuous threats, tightening of rules when resistance threatens, and using parents’ fears for their children’s well-being as a way of quashing rebellion. Layla, however, her friend Ayesha, her boyfriend David on the outside (he’s Jewish, and his dad has State Department connections), other detainees and sympathetic guards including Jake, are determined to get out the truth about the camp and the extreme violation of the Constitution represented by the whole business of incarcerating American citizens without cause or due process.The plot of this novel is tight, the characterizations fully developed, the action gripping, and of course most important of all is the basic premise: freedom isn’t free, and constant vigilance and sacrifice may be required to defend our civil liberties against an authoritarian administration. I hope this novel receives the wide dissemination it clearly deserves, for the sake of all of us!
