While I could use of the information here for history or for lost artifacts, I was disappointed by the rather sketchy nature of the information in the book. I read this in college in the 90s and it blew my mind. i used to read a lot of pro-black discourse that lead me to think black men needed "saving" (i think that still goes on). This was a refreshing and necessary departure from the norm. Black women's struggle shouldn't be subordinated. "The struggle" isn't diluted by acknowledging black women deal with sexism and racism. I wanted to make sure this title was in my daughter's library as she heads to college. I just gave it to my daughter on her 18th birthday. She's exploring her racial identity, race relations, and power just like I did at her age so I trust her thinking will be greatly expanded as mine was. this is the only title I ever read by bell hooks and i never forgot it. (and no offense but i like the original cover better. that photo would not make me want to read it)

Extrodinary, I can't say enough about this book and I'm not even finished. I totally relate and now I have a better understanding. This book is not for the faint-hearted, it's raw truth. I will be purchasing other works from this author. Bravo bell hooks, Bravo!

This should be mandatory reading. So much of this is still relevant today. Important insights on the black female experience and how mainstream feminism leaves women of color behind.

Of course I would have like more ideas on solutions to the problem and didn't capture my interest all of the time. But I enjoyed it I thought about things I usually don't think about as a black male and just how much truth there is to comments such as "all black women have is themselves" it's hard to ignore some behavior described in this book in real life now. Definitely a great read on a perspective that's often undermined

I had to read this class for my women's studies class. Everyone agreed it's a book that forced everyone to look into themselves about how the U.S. has treated women of African descent for centuries. White men, Black men, and White women have ALL benefited from the sufferings of Black women in the United States. hooks demonstrated her argument very well in this book. As a class, we agreed that hooks is right. Personally, it was very sad to read this book because black women clearly need to be aware of the historical oppression they've been under for decades in the United States. Even though some things have changed for women of African descent, a lot more needs to be done. Everyone who cares about feminism and black women must read this book. The feminist movement has served the interest of white women for too long. It's time white women acknowledge this fact and support black women as well as those from other races. I'm officially a follower of hooks and she is my number one U.S. feminist scholar to date.

Bell Hooks sets the standard for Womanist (black Feminist) literature. It is a must read for any serious scholar in the 21st century.

My mother and I have always wanted to read a book together, partly for personal gain and partly because a few years back my dad and I nearly read the entire Harry Potter Series together when I was in grade school and it made her a little jealous. I am 20 and in college (where I read a lot) and she's 50 and employed and has never been a heavy reader(literally reads mostly magazine articles about interior design). I found that we would often have conversations about race, gender, sexuality and the intersection of these identities that we inhabit daily as black women, but the conversation always felt lacking to me, and I'm sure my mother shared in my sentiments. We read the first 28 pages of this book and the conversation was lightening, finally breathing force and life into every argument we'd ever taken a stance on in family discussions and every conversation we had had but never could find concrete words with which to support. In case she wasn't enjoying the read already (which she thoroughly was), my dad walked in 30 minutes after we started with large eyes and a not so subtle wanting look for inclusion, peeping over my shoulder to discover the title of the work that had us shouting, audibly "oohing and ahhing", and even laughing in the next room... and that there was enough to incite an air of commitment to this roughly 200 page read that I've never seen my mother possess approaching anything but a Spring issue of Veranda. We'll be reading a little bit of this book everyday for the next week or two. It is a very fulfilling, enlightening and self-strengthening read. Thank you bell hooks.

Reviews that guided my purchase stated the book was about the Great War 1914-1918 and there are good pages in respect of the experiences of those who fought. However the essence of the book is what the title states, about how the War is remembered through the prism of modern criticism and ideas, in none of which I was interested. Caveat emptor.

The paradox of the Great War is that it was so vast and transformative that it is quite impossible for a single human mind to comprehend in its totality. Fussell's excellent writing and scholarship comes closest to opening modern eyes to the full enormity of the event. For some time I have been devouring as much literature as I could find on the Great War, but this book absolutely takes first place. If I could recommend just one book on the subject to any interested reader, this would be it.Fussell describes the impact of the war on the culture and psychology of the 20th century, illustrating what, for me, were jaw-dropping insights, drawing on the memoirs and artistic expressions of the participants. I have been pondering it ever since reading it last year and it has generated many productive conversations with others. A page-turner and absolute must read. It will transform your view of modern history.

Still relevant discussion of how the war was fought affected those in the trenches and everyone else. "Troglodyte World" is one of the most vivid descriptions of trench warfare you can find, and very readable. Have been assigning this to undergraduates for more than 15 years, and still find it very useful. Buy the book.

With the 100 year anniversary of World War One upon us, there has been an outpouring of new books on the war. Some of these are very good indeed, but reading a few new ones drew me back to this classic. I think it may be the best book I have ever read on the War, for two reasons.First, while the book is mostly about the war in literature and memory, Fussell captures and shows the actual day-to-day experience of the soldiers in the trenches more vividly than anything else I have read. He was in combat in Europe World War II, so he knew things in visceral terms that non- combatants don't know (and, as he points out, very often did not and do not want to know). Also, while much of his research was literary, the rest of it was about as immediate as you can get: he spent three months in a room at the Imperial War Museum, reading the Museum's (unsorted) archive of papers of the British troops in World War I. In so doing, he says, "For three months I lived in the trenches with the British soldiery, accompanying them on raids on the German trenches across the way, consoling myself with their rum, pursuing and crunching lice in my trouser seams, and affecting British phlegm as they jumped the bags and dashed directly into machine gun fire."The day to day experience he conveys is horrible, claustrophobic, and increasingly pointless. Soldiers on both sides began to believe that the war would never end; "the war", indeed, begins to seem a great pitiless machine that chews up rank after rank of men, and spits out corpses. This is not a new thought -- no one who has read much about the War is going to believe that trench life was fun. But Fussell conveys more strongly than anyone else I have read just how awful, and endless, it was. He intended his description to make war look horrible, and it does.Second, Fussell's most important literary observation, it seems to me, is less about literature per se than about a way of thinking -- the modern way of thinking, if you will. He goes through key themes as they appeared in the writings of several major authors of the War. What emerges overall, however, is a sense that for many the ability to believe in ideals was killed in the war, shifting the postwar world to an attitude of pessimism and irony. Many have criticized Fussell's focus on a small group of British writers, but I think his point is still valid. The First World War made it impossible for thinking people to believe in human progress, or in the basic goodness of humankind. In the century since then, it has been too easy to remain disillusioned.This is a terrific book, for those whose interests are primarily historical, as well as for those who have literary inclinations. Read it.

This seems like it would be an utterly fascinating study of WWI through the literature of the soldiers who fought in it. And it is a great study, but not really a fascinating one. Fussell's work is very impressive and makes a fantastic academic work. But few outside academia or literary circles will find this a pleasurable read. Unless you are already familiar with the majority of WWI poetry, memoirs, novels, and other literature, much of this book will be overwhelming. While Fussell does quote extensively, I think readers will still be lost if they have not read these already. I was hoping this book would be more approachable to a mass audience than it turned out to be. I read this as a part of a Masters history course, so I might have had a bit more context than some readers might and still found it fairly overwhelming. Nonetheless, it is an important book in the study of WWI and how it has shaped the memory of the war (as well as succeeding wars).3 stars might be a little harsh, but this is Amazon, not a college bookstore. If you're an avid student of WWI, you don't need my review to know you should read this book.

I’m a professional airbrush artist. I’ve always approached my art commercially and having a marketing management background I’m not a newbie to business. However, I’ve always found that marketing and selling art provides unique challenges. My airbrush business really picked up since last year, but now I’m looking to reach a new level. I’ve read Maria’s blog in the past. This book was released at exactly the perfect time for me. It expands on a lot of topics she has written about in her blog, but it’s all in one book and organized in a logical order and there’s a lot more info and background. I love the worksheets at the end of chapters. Some of her advice I was already practicing before I read the book, but I also picked up a lot of great ideas from her book. A big one for me were her chapters on pricing and of course art licensing. What I really like about her book though, is that it’s full of great advice, without the condescending tone of some other art business books I’ve read. I highly recommend this book.

I certainly wasn't born with a business mind, much artistic talent or any inclination to surf. So this most Californian of how-to books that focusses on how the author went about selling her surf-loving husband's art should have rubbed me – a cynical Old World Brit who merely dabbles in water colours when he's had too much to drink – up the wrong way. And yet, despite the odd mix of woo-woo spiritualism and crass Yankee commercialism (you have to emanate true love for other people before you can close the deal) I found myself, dare I say it, agreeing with her. After reading this personal guide to negotiating the choppy waters of making a living through creating art I was inspired. OK, I don't have the talent (yet) to make a living from my art, but I do have the tenacity. Put a cork in the wine bottle, and get to work. Business and art don't have to be mutually exclusive. In fact, as you realise the further you get though the book, good art and good business go hand in hand. The bottom line? If you have any desire to make a living from your art, I recommend you read this practical, inspirational book.

Maria Brophy is unique in her field of art consulting in that she is actively managing the career of her artist husband in real time and, in that capacity, works firsthand with buyers. She has the conversations, handles the negotiations, deals with the obstacles, just like the artists she consults with. Her experience spans the entire range of buyers from one-on-one collectors to licensees to corporate events. This book inspired me with its positivity, specificity, and practicality. My bookshelf is full of art business books, and I've read them all. THIS is the book I will recommend to friends and fellow artists. Thank you, Maria, for taking the time to collect your thoughts and experiences and gather them into this enormously helpful guide.

This book is a gold mine for anyone in a creative field, but definitely incredibly helpful for illustration artists like me. I've been freelancing since 2010 doing illustration and graphic design, but I was barely making it. I had no business training whatsoever, but this book was a perfect resource to teach me the ins and outs of the art business and it helped me immensely. Just following Maria's advice to get focused on what I really want to do was super helpful. I realized I didn't enjoy doing graphic design or taking on commissions that didn't mesh with my core values as an artist just to earn a paycheck. Now I only focus on making fantasy illustration and portraits. I'm doing what I love, so the work I'm producing is so much better and people are taking notice. I've implemented so many of the strategies Maria laid out, and I'm finally seeing the success I've yearned for all these years. I bought this book for my wife and she just finished reading it. She said it was one of the most helpful “business books” she’s read in a while. Most of what we read/hear about marketing and growing a business deals with the big picture mindset stuff, which, while definitely important in its own right, doesn't really allow us to take that next step with concrete ideas. We’re at a point where we make steady income that allows us to "get by," but have been stuck on really growing because we’ve lacked more tangible ideas to put into action. Maria offers a lot of this in Art Money Success - along with tons of great informational tidbits - so we definitely highly recommend!

Few things are as frustrating as reading advice from someone who has not actually accomplished what they are writing about. It's refreshing to read a book like this detailing specific plans of action and offering practical exercises to help clarify your path.It's a very substantial review of the tried and true methods of both traditional and guerrilla marketing as well as an honest appraisal of what it takes to succeed. I like that the author suggests that every artist must forge their own artistic and marketing path and style. Additionally, she does a great job using her own challenges to illustrate the roadblocks and solutions that she and her husband discovered along the way.I'll be re-reading this guide a few more times. I'm sure there are gems I'm missing.

Tastemakers rallied-Louis Comfort Tiffany became an interior designer while his father's firm, Tiffany and Company, produced Japoniste silver. Eastlake furniture invaded fashionable shops like Cottier's, and Oriental stores appeared even in small towns. Graphics transmitted the new design overtly through advertising and subtly through products like ubiquitous Staffordshire tableware. This book takes a thorough look at household furnishings, from the lavish productions of the Herter Brothers to humble Minton tiles. This volume will intrigue collectors, historians, and homemakers. About the Author

Karen Zukowski is an independent historian of late-nineteenth-century American visual culture, with a special interest in interiors. She holds a PhD from the City University of New York. She was the curator of Olana State Historic Site, one of the finest surviving Aesthetic Movement houses in America, built by Frederic Edwin Church, the Hudson River School painter. She is currently an adjunct faculty member in the Museum Studies department of New York University, and the Cooper Hewitt/Parsons MA program in the History of Decorative Arts and Design. She is an active member of several professional organizations for historic houses, and lives in New York City.

Minimal effort put into this book. Not worth buying.

very nice book

I admit to reading the book cover to cover one lazy winter afternoon. My first creative heroes were William Morris and others who taught themselves how to do so many different things in order to enact their vision in every element of the house-- tiles, fabric, furniture, and so on. The aesthetic movement changed the middle class American house and family life in urban areas, integrating family time and encouraging creative pursuits. It is a positive reading experience marred only the author's failure to catch some really awful misuse of words in the text (e.g. liable for libel and tenant for tenet), her belief that taste is a moral issue, her lack of awareness of the incredible positive impact of television and magazine house porn, and her belief that somehow two workers in a family adversely affects their aesthetic reach. The conclusion left a bad taste after a thoroughly interesting and informative ride through an era of incredible democratization of beauty and a DIY ethic that continues today, and yet, no acknowledgement that the Kenners' lifestyle required phenomenal amounts of cheap labor by people who could only dream of having time, energy, space, and finances to host a pink luncheon.

A splendid and very readable book enormously helpful to those wishing to understand Victorian design before 1900. Beyond a mere description of houses and rooms, the authoress places the Ascetic movement in a wider context of social and artistic trends, with a comprehensive overview ranging from crockery to greeting cards. The modern reader, fed up with minimalism, learns why older homes of this period have such enduring appeal.Of particular value, she describes the impression that Ascetic rooms should give, and the stylistic elements that create "... an atmosphere of beauty and an impression of comfort charming alike to the eye and the heart." Those participating in the "Victorian Revival" in interior design, will find her discussion most helpful in creating rooms with the feel of the period, that are not museums.We hope that future editions will enlarge the drawings that accompany the excellent narrative, making it easier for the reader to read the drawings and appreciate the finer points made by the writer.

Only a so so job. Almost nothing new. Really not as good as it could be. Especially when compared with Billy Wyman's Rolling with the Stones. That book is packed with so many photos, flyers, and other good stuff. Kinda blows this book away. This book is worth getting mainly because it can be had used in good condition at such a cheaply price. I supposed the most interesting stuff presented in this book are the earliest photos and posters from when they first started playing and touring. (Oh, and Wyman, and Taylor get short shrift, which is true of a lot of Stones material. As if they were never even in the band.) Some really great early flyers and adverts. Still Wyman's book is so much more jam packed with promo photos, ads, reviews, related material. Blows this book away really. They don't overlap in terms of actual photos and you get comments from all four current members of the Stones in Rolling Stone 50. Still, could have been a lot better. The other amazing book most people don't seem aware of is Ethan Russell's book which only covers the 1969 tours but is utterly unique because it has both pictures and an ongoing diary about the tour by Russell (who took all the photos). Its one of a kind. I don't know of any other book of the Rolling Stones tour that has both photos and commentary, and by the same person no less. Closest you will get to being there beside the movie C**ksucker Blues.

Such a fabulous book! This was accidentally purchased instead of the Rolling Stone Magazine 50 year book (which I also highly recommend), and I'm so glad it was! The book features a ton of phenomenal photos of the band. One of my favorite parts of Desert Trip was the enormous photo gallery they had there, and this book is second only to that! A must have for any true Stones fan!

Having been a Stones fan since 1965 I was super excited to own this book. It sits on my coffee table for anyone who visits to enjoy. So many pictures! It depicts The Rolling Stones from their beginning till present in vivid detail. I love the cover too! Brings back many memories of 1970 when they first started using that logo. All in all I would totally recommend this book to add to anyones collection & if you are a Stones fan it is a must!

This being the Stones' 50th, etc, I expected "50" to be more than - frankly - a collection of cut 'n paste pix. Sure I haven't seen a lot of them, but it would have been nice to get some insight into what was going on concurrent with the pix. Still: you get what you pay for, and I certainly didn't pay a lot for "50," so...well, it'll be nice to flaunt on my "media (or something) table."

great book and nice quality images, however they just throw it to the boc and ship it so. the book cover is a little bit scratched by the box and the black cover you will see the shiny part as scratched.

Terrific overview of one-half century of classic Stones!! Well balanced, superb printing, some real photo rarities. Front cover is a tactile delight, definitely one coffee-table book to feature on a real coffee table...this is not one of those "set it in your lap and browse" kind of books. Like the Stones themselves, this one packs a punch!!

The Rolling Stones 50 is the most complete collection of memories I have ever seen. The photos, many of them i have never seen, are crisp and clear as if they were taken yesterday. If you are a Rolling Stones fan, this book is a MUST-HAVE!

Arrived on time, which I was worried about because it was estimated from anywhere before Christmas until January. Like brand new condition, still had a protective clear plastic over it.Also a great book full of large, high-quality images. Very nice for the enthusiast.
