THE GRAND ESCAPE details the people and events around a major prison break from Holzminden during World War I. It begins by giving the reader some background on the events that led up to World War I including the building of professional armies and diplomatic efforts that were either non-existent or ineffectual. It introduces the Hague Conventions that were supposed to legislate the ethical and humane treatment of Prisoners of War.The British entered the war with enthusiasm and with the confidence that the war would soon be over with the Allies victorious. The book talks about the origins of the Royal Flying Corps which began as a rich man's club since they could afford the planes. It talks about the dangers of using this new technology in war where flying speeds were about 75 MPH and the ceiling for these open cockpit vehicles was 10,000 feet.After setting the scene, the book focuses on a few men who were mostly RFC pilots and spotters who crashed in German held territory and who were taken to various prisons. After numerous escape attempts, the most incorrigible found themselves at Holzminden which was commanded by Captain Karl Niemeyer who delighted in tormenting his prisoners in both great and small ways.The book details the some of the prisoners' plans to dig a tunnel out of the prison and then make their way to Holland where they would be out of German-controlled territory. It details the difficulty of the endeavor as men dug in claustrophobic conditions with bad air and the constant fear of tunnel collapse or discovery by the Germans. And getting through the tunnel was only the start of the ordeal. The escapees had to travel through hostile territory with very limited supplies and the constant fear of discovery.The book is profusely illustrated with photographs, maps, and other documents. There is an extensive bibliography, detailed chapter notes, and an extensive index (not provided in the Advanced Reader Copy I read.) I especially liked the Epilogue which followed up on a number of the men who managed to escape and make their way back to England and told how the lessons learned escaping from Holzminden helped POWs during World War II survive and escape.

This book was given to me specifically for me to review it. That said, I try to be completely honest and transparent in my reviews.This is the best historical book that I have read in the past six months!It tells the story of the Allied escape from Holzminden in the First World War ("the War to end all wars").Neal Bascomb, the author of many books about World Wars I & II (including The Winter Fortress, Hunting Eichmann, The Perfect Mile, Higher, Nazi Hunters, and Red Mutiny) tells the story of the pilots and crews that were kept at Holzminden. The author tells a bit about each of the main characters prior to capture and then goes into great detail about conditions at the camp, how they planned, and executed their great escape.The book is absolutely loaded with period pictures, maps, illustrations, etc.I reviewed the hard back version, and the book itself is well bound and solidly constructed. The book would make a great gift, and it will last for years and years.I loved the conversational tone of the book. It felt like a fire side chat with a beloved uncle who "was there."Whether you are a general historical fan, interested specifically in World War I, or just want to read a great book, I highly recommend this book!

If you enjoy reading about World War II, Neal Bascomb is your author. I've read several of his books, including the one that inspired this young adult book, The Escape Artists: A Band of Daredevil Pilots and the Greatest Prison Break of the Great War.I like this trend of authors rewriting their adult books for the YA or middle-grade market. Kids don't get enough chance to read good narrative nonfiction. Neal Bascomb's book is about an escape attempt by Allied pilots from Holzminden, a German POW camp in World War II. For this book, Mr. Bascomb has drilled down to the camp and the escape attempt. In the book for adults, he examined other camps, other escape attempts and other POWs. The going is kind of slow at first here, with long sentences and daunting words (for a young reader), but once the narrative focuses exclusively on the digging of the tunnel and the escape, it moves along swiftly.I compared two passages from the adult book and the YA book, to show you the difference in the author's voice for the separate audiences. In this paragraph, he's describing what would motivate POWs to continue the escape effort, despite its seeming impossibility. The writing isn't all that different, I think because Mr. Bascomb is just as fluid a writer in the adult market.From the adult book: "They drew from the shame, unwarranted though it was, of being shot down and captured. The months, years, stolen from their lives. The separation from their squadrons and their families. The narrow escapes, only to be recaptured. The spells in solitary, sometimes at the brink of madness and death. The deprivations of Holzminden. The endless hours of tunneling, the terror of the dark, the fear of collapse, of being buried alive in the bowels of the earth. And Karl Niemeyer. The thought of Niemeyer, of the moment he would realize they had beaten him, was reason enough to continue."From this YA book: "What kept them going? Many things. The shame, unwarranted though it was, of being shot down and captured. Imprisonment -- in one camp after the next -- months, years, stolen from their lives. The separation from their squadrons and their families. The narrow escapes. The recaptures. Solitary confinement, sometimes pushed to the brink of madness and death. Holzminden. Its petty annoyances, its waiting, its drumbeat of theft and deprivation. The endless hours of tunneling, the terror of the dark, the fear of collapse and suffocating in the the bowels of the earth. All the setbacks and the stubborn efforts. And Niemeyer. His venomous harangues, his never-ending abuses. The thought of Niemeyer, of besting him, was reason enough to continue."The only caveat I have is just the level of interest an American teen would have in the subject matter. World War II is ancient history for kids in the current generation. And history that is not U.S.-centered might not have much pull for them. But for adventure-loving readers, these hurdles are easily overcome. The addition of photos, charts, drawings and other graphic matter make this an interesting read for both teens and adults.

He literally runs into Katelyn. Once they meet and touch, the sparks come alive.Lauren Landish did an outstanding job writing about the push and pull between Mark & Katelyn. Mark does most of the pushing and pulling away. Katelyn is a breath of fresh air for the resort and Mark. She is extremely attracted to Mark and vice versa and they think they can be friends! Ha! These two were never meant to be just friends. Reading about their attraction, Mark's fear, Katelyn putting another woman in her place, Katelyn making Mark accept her for who and what she is is similar to setting a lit match to the fuse of a powder keg. Once that powder keg explodes, Katelyn and Mark fall in love.Katelyn stands up to Mark and makes him finally confess why he's afraid. She finally convinces him that she is not his previous girlfriend and absolutely loves how passionate he is. I love how Katelyn stands up to Mr. Control and convinces him to spill his secrets, fears, and love for her. She is one strong woman and definitely made for Mark.I loved the characters, the descriptive writing, story about family, the banter, the smoking/blazing hot intimacy between Mark & Katelyn. These 2 set the bed on fire! Whew!Outstanding job, Ms. Landish. I was totally wrapped up in this story from the opening chapter to the very end. I cannot wait to read Luke's story!I read an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest and unsolicited opinion.

While he knows that he signed up for this, he also is lonely. Mark always knew that he was going to run the ranch. It was what his life was supposed to be. Now that his brothers have come home and are helping more around the ranch, Mark believes that maybe, just maybe he can breathe a little easier. With his brother's upcoming wedding, Mark knows that paying for the wedding is what his father would have wanted. When he meets the wedding event coordinator, he's instantly attracted to her. She's feminine and tough all wrapped in to a beautiful package.Katelyn is starting over. She moved from a comfortable life and knows that this is her dream job. I really enjoyed her character. She was soft and feminine at times, but tough and had a backbone when it was required. She was able to see Mark for who he was, not for who he projected.These two have amazing chemistry. They burn up the sheets, but also have such a great respect for each other. Despite Mark's history, he wants to be able to take a chance with Katelyn.This story was sweet and steamy, but with such a feel good setting and ending. I really enjoyed these characters a lot. I did want to know more about the whole issue with the event and the potential sabotage. It seemed to be glossed over and I'm not sure why it was included.I hope more books are to come! I love this family.

For me the title of this book grabbed me and compelled me to purchase because it alluded to the truth that no matter where you are in life, the things you've done or mistakes you've made you still have value, you still have purpose and your life has meaning. You are not here by accident. Instead your life is the intentional will of God. As I began reading this story my heart and emotions were intertwined with every page I turned. I was able to relate to the young lady he met during a chance encounter. See God uses the simple things to confound the wise. Simple can be so impactful. While he was feeling alone she was covering him in prayer and going before the thrown on his behalf. It truly shows us that even when we feel alone we never really truly are. God will never leave us nor forsake us; there remains a ram in the bush. I related to him giving away everything and taking care of everyone else only to be used financially and given nothing in return. Not even the benefit of the doubt. I related to the addiction as I lived that nightmare from the other side. I felt as if portions of my life were unfolding in this book as I turned the pages. I wholeheartedly recommend purchasing this book its an absolute must read that I can promise you won't wish to put down. Finally to one of my favorite authors I say Thank You. Thank you for your courage, your transparency and most of all your soul and spirit you so generously barred for all the world to see. You may never know the magnitude of the impact you have made. My advice : Never give up on God as he will never give up on you. Always pray at the midnight hour. Just as God worked a miracle for Paul & Silas he will do the same for you.

I’ve heard so many things about this author, and being an author myself, I know what it feels like to spill your truth. It is a healing process for sure, but the most beautiful thing of all is being able to inspire readers and touch them through the gift of writing. You did that, Mr. Weaver, and I hope that as time passes, as you continue to heal yourself, as you focus on reaching your highest potential, that you do not forget to pat yourself on the back and give yourself the credit you deserve. Continue to live your best life, and know that I’m ANOTHER black woman, rooting for all black men to win! Take a bow on writing a superb story.

Poor Devin the walls all crumbled for him at one time. In part due to his own mistakes and being involved with hater and others that wanted him for what he could give or what he had. Even his own mom didnt care about what he was going through at that moment, only her unpaid rent. His baby mama wasnt taught to feel good about her self so she commenced to instilling the same negative thoughts and ideas into the daughter.Make sure you get a good proof reader.. There were a few spelling errors . I wish you luck and God's blessings.. Keep writing push forward.

This was a great book! There are not many books that I have read that left me emotional but this one really touched my heart. I actually cried when Devin met his Dad. We all have days when we might go through something but you have to have faith and keep pushing. I’m so glad that he never gave up. After the dark cloud the sun really did shine again for him. I loved this story! Honestly, I don't know why or what made me choose this book, but GOD HAS A WAY OF GETTING OUR ATTENTION. Crossing paths with this book wasn't coincidental or by accident. There were a lot of lessons and wisdom in this book. It spoke of similar things that I still battle with as well. The outcome of the main character turned out well. I pray an EXTREME HAPPY ENDING for this author who took the first step to healing by admittance. I can't see God not using one of HIS GREATEST ASSETS for one of HIS GREATEST PURPOSES. what if jesus, moses, akhenaten and all the jewish pharaohs all lived at the same time and were all pharaohs and alsowere still the other person they were ?but several of them are king tut? quantum physics? multiple universes? nope. ahmed Osman with some research that can blow your mind.Osman had put together a theory where they all are that he believes is nonfiction. i do not feel a need to dispute his theory. i have a timeline that i am more comfortable with and i will just stick with that and go with the family bible and believe in my heart that jesus is not King tut. if you want to argue about this just remember that Osman does not answer his email,or at least not when i have sent it.

A great read, I also got it on Kindle and only wished the digital version had a lot more photos of the things and places he references (In the chapters with the references, which I know isn't very academic of me but it would sure help me tie all these bits of history together with the different paintings, writings, and tomb walls he writes about). Tons of factual data that needs focus to follow sometimes but in the end, an extremely well-researched book and now one of my favorites.

The story of Moses and Akhenaten is a fascinating tale and one that makes a lot of sense historically. Unfortunately, the author used the venue of the book to spend most of his time arguing with other scholars in the field with a different viewpoint.There was no coherent chronology and much of the evidence for Egyptian Hebrew sources was assumed by the author to be in general knowledge. For instance, he makes a comparison to Yuya and Joseph of the Biblical multi-coloured coat as being the patriarch of the Egyptian Jews, though there is no chronology or discussion of how he got to Egypt and why he would be there in the first place. If Yuya were indeed the father of the Egyptian Hebrews, then a more in-depth discussion of his origins would have been helpful.Most of the book is spent refuting other scholars ideas, in no particular chronological order, without having the reader engaged as to why these facts are important. Was it Year 1 or Year 21? While it may be important in the timeline of the Amarna Dynasty, the reader is left to read between the lines as to why this would be important and specifically whom is referred, as the author refutes the findings of someone named Redford.A good editor could save this book by first laying out a coherent argument and chronology as to what happened, where and when. Then other arguments may be presented with scholarly refutation and counter-argument. As it is, the book is a piecemeal presentation of a confusing subject.

Very interesting idea about where Moses came from and ended up. Much thought went into this and sounds logical to me. The evidence is convincing as well.

As a proud Egyptian scientist, knowing the absence of archeological evidence in support of the presence of a foreign "nation" in Egypt, a Pharaonic root of monotheism makes much more sense!

I have four of Osman's books. I consider them must-read books. Don't miss them! Very well researched and that research certainly helps a person to get the Old Testament characters in their proper order.

This book had my attention from beginning to end. It presented a very interesting hypothesis about Moses and Joseph, both of OT fame. It strays off the conventional path of not just Egyptology but of Judaism/Chrisitianity. I've discussed it with quite a few people and got some heat about it, but I loved the book. It was a fresh and different outlook on both Moses and Akhenaten and whether you believe it or not, it is definetely food for thought. Also, it was well written to boot.Read it for yourself and come to your own conclusion.

I loved the book and the idea of the whole concept. However if this is true then how did Moses body get back in a tomb in Egypt when he lead his people out of Egypt.

This man saw the best side of everything. And he knew how to tell a good story. Really enjoyed listening to him. Of course, today liberals would throw labels like "square" or "old fashioned" at him. But that just shows how truly dumb they are with their hateful attacks on decent people.

I've always been a fan of Paul Harvey, so this was a nice book to fill in the blanks about his life. To get a good feel for what Paul Harvey was about, do check out the "Rest of the Story" books and other Harvey books. There is no one like him on the radio these days.

Good book generally, lot's of info. BUT...there are problems!Each chapter is full of footnotes. Maybe 30-50 per chapter. That's OK, but what is involved in finding & reading these footnotes on the Kindle is almost impossible! It took me at least 3-5 minutes to find each one after guessing at what location # it might be at, then realizing I didn't note the chapter # or name (this is necessary to find the footnote), then going back to find the chapter & name, again guessing at the location the footnote might be at, let alone the problem of getting back to the chapter & page I originally found the footnote on!This whole procedure is very disruptive to the flow of the story as well as technologically challenging and a real nightmare in general!This is a weak point of the Kindle in general. But this book in particular relies so much on footnotes and has so many that it really ruins the smooth reading of the book.There is no information on the page you are reading (save the location #), no chapter # or chapter name is shown on any page beyond the 1st (title) page of each chapter (this is true of most Kindle books as well).Also, if you don't write down the location # of the page you are reading (or book mark it) you are lost when you want to return to it because the "go to furthest page read feature" takes you to the page the footnote was on which is near the end of the book!Footnotes should be denoted by the footnote #, then the chapter # and then the location #. Also, in guessing the location of where the footnote might be, it's very hard to do if you don't immediately remember the chapter # and name.As far as the content, there is much to much un-necessary description. For example, the physical appearance of a lobby in each of the many radio stations Mr. Harvey visited or worked at. Every description goes into gaudy detail of the Gothic looks of the place and have no bearing at all to the story nor are they ever referenced again. Many of these descriptions go on for many pages and are not at all necessary to the story or anything else.I got the feeling that after the 1st draft of the book was written some editor felt he could increase the size of the book 25% by adding lots of un-necessary description and details...and did!These detailed descriptions could have been so much more interesting if the words were spent describing in detail say Mr. Harvey's home or office or something that might give us further insight & clues to his personality rather than the history of where the marble used in some 1937 radio station came from & was mined and installed! There's no description or details at all about his Arizona home other than a few sentences that it existed. But loads of details about the physical looks of places that have nothing to do with the story & nobody could care less about.Still there is much good information, stories, antidotes and quotes in the book. Just super cumbersome to read being so heavily footnoted without any easy way to read the footnotes.

This book Good Day The Paul Harvey is recommended as a must read for anybody that loves to hear about a great American that lived life to the fullest.

Paul J. Batura's biography of Paul Harvey was an enjoyable read. He captured the essence of what made Paul Harvey so beloved by so many. If you grew up, like I did, listening to Paul Harvey News and Comments, you will love the book. If you did not have the privilege of living in that era, do yourself a favor and read this book about a great American!

It was an interesting book. I remember listening to "the rest of the story" when I was a kid. Even my own kids would pause in the morning when Paul Harvey came on, they also wanted to hear "the rest of the story". Worth the time spent reading it.

Overall a good book, but the misspellings detract from the enjoyment. Sax 5th Avenue? Clyde and Bonnie Parker? Would still recommend the book.
