I bought this book because I needed to learn the foundation of drawing flowers. I was never terrible before but it was always a hit or miss and often times I'd be sitting there staring at my page thinking I don't know what I'm doing at all. But I bought the book and saw results that I would have never DREAMED of, and the crazy part is that they were instant. I started doodling and I'm like what the heck I can actually draw! Most how-to books give you some tips and it takes time but somehow Alli dummy-proofed this and it blew my mind! Seriously, amazing! Can't wait to have more time to go through it all. Thanks Alli for sharing your knowledge and making me feel so much more confident in my ability to draw!

I'm a handlettering and watercolor artist who regularly uses florals to enhance my work. I am always struggling to think of flowers (I usually just make up imaginary florals to be honest) so when I saw this book I knew I had to have it. First of all, this book as absolutely gorgeous and I would buy it for that reason alone. Secondly and more importantly, Alli's instructions are so clear and helpful if you're looking to step up your floral illustrations. You will surprise yourself every time you finish drawing a flower and it turns out so beautifully! Some may be concerned that they'll be drawing the same version of each flower every time or copying Alli's exactly, however her written instructions give insight into the characteristics of each flower and more generalized guidance on her approach to each step so that you can start branching out into drawing your own versions. I've almost made it through the whole book and I already feel that I'm better at visualizing each piece of the flower (like the twists and turns of the petals) as I'm drawing. I see myself referencing this book regularly for inspiration and instruction when I'm looking to draw florals!

I own well over 200 art books including dozens on floral drawing and painting. If I had to choose just one as the most useful it would be this one by Alli Koch. Alli takes you step by step in drawing each type of flower ( the book covers a variety of flowers) and gives you space on every page to practice each step. As the final step inlearning each flower there is a full page to practice the complete blossom. That immediate practice area gives you great feedback before you move on to the next step. Other books offer steps but usually I don't bother to get out a sketch pad and immediately work to see if I am internalizing those steps. I love getting the immediate feedback of seeing if my lines and shading correctly compare to Ali's models.Love this book and would definitely purchase any others that Alli may publish on other flowers or other drawing topics. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for the best way to draw sweet peas with their multiple folds, tulips, daisies, peonies,anemones, sunflowers, dogwoods, camellias, magnolias, proteas,hydrangeas, carnations, lilacs, dahlias, ranunculus, succulents and various leaves.

I'm surprised this hasn't been noted yet, but there were a few things that slipped past the editor of this book- pages 35-45 are missing, and in their place are pages 83-94 (so they're in it twice). Maybe it only happened with a certain printing batch- but either way, I feel a little shafted!Despite these issues, I think the book is beautiful and I like how it has so many varieties of flowers.Hope to see these problems revised in an updated edition!

First off, I don't typically write reviews. Like, EVER. I bought this with the hope that I would become more confident in my skills as a professional doodler. I don't have one artistic bone in my body, but the step-by-step instructions in How to Draw Modern Florals made drawing so simple for me. This was one of the best purchases I have made in a long time!

You should have seen me try to draw anything floral before. I opened this book thinking it would probably take me a little longer than others to catch on because I am truly a beginner to drawing flowers but Alli makes it SO SEAMLESS. Her step by step makes you understand WHY you draw the lines you draw. Not to mention the design of the book is just gorgeous. I could not recommend this book more!! 🖤✨I attached a picture of what my first try was. Yes, that was my first try. I hope my first kid comes out that perfect. Just saying.

I work at a really boring telemarketing job where I have a lot of random spurts of downtime, but not enough time to actually do "work" so I decided to grab this book. It's been so freaking great--it basically saves my life in the down time. Plus, I've been following Ali on instagram for a hot minute, so I love her as a person, but then to experience her creativity in a whole other venue has been so cool. It's inspiring not only in creativity but in story. 10//10 would recommend.

I wanted to like this product, I really did. The books were glossy and awesome, the mounted hex maps were fabulous. All of the materials included were of the finest quality... EXCEPT for the most important part of all: the mechs.When I opened my new box, here is what I found. This is everything that was wrong with my miniatures:1. The Cyclop's arm was broken off.2. The Awesome's arm was glued on crooked, pressed against its body.3. The Jenner's legs were all twisted backward, with the top not glued on right.4. The Thor came pre-assembled, but the arm was glued on in the wrong direction.Part of the problem is not necessarily that the minis are too cheap. Most of them look decent, and some look really good. The problem is they are all crammed in a little plastic bag which is jammed tight into the box. They are already fragile. I don't see how you can pack them together in such a tight space and not expect a few pieces to get bent or broken.It's disappointing too, because everything else is such high quality. But how can I give it more than one star if I'm forced to return the item? Thank Amazon customer service for quick, easy returns. But I don't feel like re-buying another one of these at all. With such hit-and-miss quality, you are definitely taking your chances!Also, one thing I wondered as I surveyed the carnage of broken / mis-glued pieces, is why did they assemble these at all? It's such poor, obviously lousy quality. With extra glue slapped all over the pieces, and parts glued in the wrong place. I mean, if you're going to pre-assemble them for the customer AND do a shoddy job, why bother? Most of the people buying this are probably game hobbyists who plan to finish and paint them anyway. Catalyst certainly isn't doing them any favors by giving them crummy glue jobs that they're going to have to rework before they begin anyway.I love Battletech. I just wish this was better. I understand the need for cost savings, but come on Catalyst - you guys can do better than this! To those reading, I recommend doing some internet research and shell out for the old 3rd Edition instead. That is, if you want some decent minis. (They weren't perfect either, but are still better than this.) Or else buy better minis separately. Personally, I just have a hard time paying as much as this set costs and getting a bunch of broken minis to show for it.Someone else said that Catalyst Game Labs would replace broken minis for free. Does anyone know if this is true? I did not find anything about this in the set that I bought, nor did I see it on their website. If it is true, then I wish I had known before I returned this. Because other than the minis, this set is great. It would definitely force me to revise my rating upward. But as it stands, I feel like I wasted my money and time.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------UPDATE!I re-purchased this item from Amazon. As before, the product was good but the minis were very low-quality, with many problems and defects. 10 of my minis had marked defects, which are discussed in the comments below.There is an online form for Catalyst Game Labs, where you can ask for replacements of up to 10 broken minis. (You can do some searching; it is in their forums.) I filled out the form, providing details.The amazing thing is that they responded in less than a week! Five days to be exact. I received my replacement minis yesterday. This is way less than the 6 to 8 weeks that it says on their website.The not-so-amazing thing is that they only replaced 8 of the 10 minis I requested. Two of them, they ignored. The other thing is, of the 8 that I received, most of them have the same problems as the originals, and some are even worse! My new Clint is still missing a hand. My new Awesome is still glued (VERY) wrong. My new Grasshopper still has a paper-thin base. And my new Assassin still has a foot absorbed into the base.Am I just being too picky here? I'm starting to think so. Maybe I'm just spoiled. I remember the old 3rd Edition, which had minis that were much better than these, and also much more substantial. They actually had some heft to them. These are so tiny and weak, I guess I shouldn't be surprised how damaged they are.I appreciate the fast customer service. I'm just a little baffled that they sent me replacements that were in some cases worse than the originals, and ignored 2 of my requests altogether. No note, or anything.But the rest of the product is good. So I've revised my rating from 1 to 3 stars. I'd like to give it 4 or 5. I definitly would do that if this cost less. I could accept this for what it is with no minis at all, at a lower price. But $50 is pretty steep when you are getting such shoddy minis. They look like they are cheaper and worse quality than you would find in a package of green army men from the dollar store.So know what you are getting. The mounted map boards are awesome, but the mechs are not. For minis, you are better off sticking to the high quality stuff put out by Iron Wind Metals. Expensive? Yes, unfortunately. The same 26 figures will run you roughly $260. But in the long run, it's worth it.So again, as long as you know what you are getting, this set will not disappoint you. I wish it were better, but it is what it is.

Like most of my purchases from Catalyst, this product was a disappointment. 10 of the 24 plastic miniatures arrived broken. The result of being over-packed in a small plastic bag and tossed carelessly into the box. The 2 "premium-quality" mechs are sturdier and more appropriately packaged, but they overlooked an important detail in the sculpt. The miniatures are mounted facing a hex point on the base instead of a hex edge. Hex edges are used to determine facing and line of sight during play and are extremely important factors. Finally, it's clear the rulebook didn't receive proper editing before publication; typos, unbelievably (I mean that literally) convoluted wording, and confusing structure make for an unpleasant reading experience (typical of other Catalyst rulebooks).

The higher quality miniatures are great, but the rest are cheapy little plastic pieces that lean and fall over. It makes you wonder why they didn't just put ALL quality minis in here. Other than that, it's Battletech.Note to manufacturer - those 2 high quality mechs? Make them all like that, and people will pay a bit more for the quality. Please please do this. I didn't even use the cheap ones, I had to go buy metal ones, as the little cheap plastic ones were not worth my time in painting or fixing.

This box set is pretty great; you get a number of useful rulebooks, some good fiction supplements to help you get a feel for the game's universe, some high quality board game style hex maps to play on.The biggest downside is the poor quality of the normal 24 plastic minis. Several mechs are pitted where the plastic didn't form correctly, and some of the multi-part models are missing pieces that should have been glued on (my Awesome is missing an arm. That's not awesome at all). The two "high quality" omni mechs are fine, although one of them came pre-assembled and I'd have preferred to put it together myself.As a fan of battletech who hasn't played the board game since college, I'm happy with my purchase. I just wish the publisher had spent a bit more on QA.

A very fancy incarnation of Battletech complete with 26 mechs. The mechs are plastic and of toy quality starting to border model accuracy. They will require some trimming prior to painting. The other 2 mechs are model accurate miniatures. These included playing pieces, with the heavy duty map sections, enhance a new players experience. The literature included was also good quality with some excellent graphics and short stories in the Battletech style. Overall very good. If the mechs were a little better quality it would have got a top score.

If you are a fan of battle tech its great the cardboard maps are very good quality. the intro book is layed out well and a good way to get into the game. the character sheets book is easy to photocopy and use. My only complaint is the quality of the minitures now i new that they would be bad quality from other reviews and they are they are usable and sturdy but ugly. however for the cost of the set they give you a lot of stuff so i can overlook some bad mini's cause i will by the ones i like in better quality anyway.

I must be honest. I was expecting a low quality shabby introduction box. This is quite impressive! The map was not paper, but hard and resilient. The books are colored and of excellent quality. Then we arrive to the miniatures. Included were 26 plastic miniatures, with 2 of them being "model" quality. This intro box will bring much gaming into my home, and I am pleased for it. I am now looking forward to other releases. Do yourself a favor and pickup a box, and get to gaming!

I have never seen so much about the inner meaning of the Yijing explained so clearly. Here the reader will find illumination about the He Tu ("The Yellow River Map"), the Lo Shu ("The Lo River Writing"), lines that are "central" and "correct" (aka "Governing" and "Constituting" rulers), the nuances of different judgements, and numerous traditional Yijing diagrams. Everything that is most obscure in, for example, the Wilhelm-Baynes "I Ching" is made clear here. Again, this book might be hopelessly confusing for someone new to the Yijing, but for someone who has spent time working with the oracle and who wants to deepen a relationship with it, I can think of no better book than this.

A very good and detailed undertaking to explain the manner in which the I Ching was created, the meaning behind the number system and the symbols which direct the gua into place. I highly recommend it to anyone studying the I Ching in depth.

There is two ways to understand I Ching, first, the thematic approach and second, the structural approach. Mostly all books I have encountered for years were discussing I Ching from thematic approach and never explaining purpose of each line that represented Changes.The Numerology of The I Ching is a quite different book. It was explaining I Ching from the view of structural approach. It was quite enlightening and giving a deep understanding about true nature of every line that represented Changes. I will recomend it to every I Ching lover without doubt.

This is a very interesting book for fans of the I Ching; it contains a lot of history about the I Ching including several fascinating layouts of the symbols and a lot of amazing mathematical secrets, including diagrams that show how the two-dimensional historic drawings used in ancient times to represent the I Ching were actually meant to convey three-dimensional information. There was also a brief--too brief--discussion of how the I Ching can be done on the fingers of the hand. This would be of great interest to math puzzle fans, I think, and to anyone who wants to know more about the historical foundations of the I Ching. My only complaints about the book were that I found myself wishing that it had been much longer; it seemed like a quick taste of something that left me wanting a whole meal. Yet it is mainly a gateway, one that takes a lifetime to put into practice. One feels incredibly lucky to have discovered such wisdom in his/her own lifetime! I've seen many gimmicky packages of the I Ching that are unauthentic, but this version here rings true throughout.

There were many very interesting and insightful parts of this book, but about half of it seems geared towards people who really like numbers and number crunching, which I didn't expect. If that's not your thing, you might consider looking at other companion books for the I Ching. However, the parts there is enough wisdom and insight in this little book to justify the money I spent on it, and I enjoy using it along side the author's main work, The Complete I Ching.

Fridthof Nansen in this book did more to bring skiing to the larger world than any other individual. Until his Greenland crossing on skis, few outside of Norway, or Scandinavia at the most, had heard of skiing, although of course it had existed there for centuries. The early chapter of the book on skis and "skilobing" (skiing) is a marvelous account of the sport, and particularly of Sondre Norheim and the Telemarkers who revolutionized it as recreation.Nansen writes the book in what can only be called a charming tone. He makes the crossing of the icecap seem easy, and indeed, most of the harrowing detail of the expedition relates to the efforts of the party after being dropped off at sea on the east coast of Greenland, through the ice floes with great difficulty, to an eventual landing and a hard climb up to the central ice plateau. There is also considerable detail given about the way of life of the Eskimo and Danish inhabitants of the Greenland west coast, where Nansen and his party overwintered after the crossing.A classic of "cold exploration" and a lively style and good read after more than a century.

This is another hit for the Backcountry Adventures series. This is the fourth of these books that I have purchased. They are very well done giving lots of information other than just about the roads. I have used the previous ones to navigate many backroads, especially in Colorado, with no problem at all. It would be nice to have a few more of the tougher trails included, but this is written with the stock SUV in mind. Excellent especially for someone just getting into wheeling, but also good for the experienced crowd because of the references to the scenery and other sights available even on the easy trails. I'm looking forward to trying some of these trails!

I found this very informative showing good facts and details, examples would be gps coordinates and road information (like you'll pass mine shaft on rt then road forks). One will find that the book also has a detailed road description in reverse, in case you are on a road traveling from the other end. You will also love the maps, lots of them, on every page. Then on each page the author talks about what hazards to look for and what sights to see, goes into good overall detail, very well done. The book goes over facts of 4 wheeling for the novice and the pro so that all can enjoy the outdoors and be safe at the same time. When traveling these roads you'll have the guide next to you with page marked for constant referance. Take your camera and a tripod to record your trip.

I bought this to get some great detail for some dirt bike riding. It is more geared to the jeep crowd but does offer a lot of insight into the backroads of AZ.

Great book but not entirely up-to-date. The author needs to run each of these routes at least once a year to keep it up to date.

Riding back trails is so much fun I love this book and it is complete so you know where to go

I found that this book was great for our off road adventures in our new Jeep. The area we visited was Sedona and Jerome, AZ, area. What we liked about this book is the odometer readings were very exact, that the book had you zero out your odometer frequently and reset the odometer. The descriptions of the off road trails were very accurate. The rating systems for difficulty factor and scenic factor are very realistic. Also the milege of the trip and the time it takes to finish the route are included in each trip. You can also use GPS coordinates.

I have had the So Cal book for a few years and love it, so I expected this book to be just like that but of a different region/state. The AZ book doesn't have the same amount of information. The trails are just as detailed with GPS points but I wanted to say that I feel that the author didn't put as much time into this one and thats why not rated a 5. Its still a great book and in my opinion still the best choice out there for anyone who likes the road less traveled and own any type of SUV. There is great information about all the trail's history, color pictures and the rating system is something that you could trust before you hit the trails.

I adore how U.S. is a place of marvels and the old world is an exotic place; usually in Spanish language (except the genial Borges) the writers feel that their culture is European and they are here like visitors, instead Poe feels closer because his voice and heart is in his land, there is not nostalgia of other places: he is a truly genius creating something new.Is interesting that apparently writers of his century thought little of him, those writers are being devoured by oblivion in archaic schools; instead Poe is so powerful, each little tale is so rich that pre-configures whole genres as science-fiction, horror, and detective stories as are known today; his essays materialize in music and architecture. Even more Poe is still present, as the voice that manifest our personal horrors is his.

This is an excellent book, but I was annoyed to discover that it's a paperback edition of a hardcover called "Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Death and Dementia," also illustrated by Grimly. So I bought the same book twice. Annoyed that it happened.

The heart the incessant beating of the heart..Okay this is a cool little toy. It is very tiny and you push a button and the heart starts beating. The problem with it is that it stopped working about a minute after I first pushed the button. It could be the battery died..I simply don't know. There looks like there is no conceivable way short of heart surgery to replace the battery. The thing will just not open unlike the Raven toy. That arrived with a dead battery. It does look pretty cool sitting on the bookshelf in front of a bunch of forgotten lore written by Poe..quoth the Raven nevermore.

You can't go wrong for the price. I got this collection of stories because it includes "The Black Cat" and I noticed it isn't in most that I've seen. Great quality and a good sized book. Great gift idea.

In high school, Poe was probably my favorite American author, and reading him again more than 40 years later, I am reminded why. Like any art, every time or generation has its style, and each has its strength. In Poe's day, the English language was more important to writers. Poe's writing is full of words you may never see elsewhere. You get the distinct feeling he loved words and he certainly knows how to put them together. His Dupin puts you in mind of Sherlock Holmes (Doyle mentions him in one of his stories, though his Holmes suggests Dupin is an amatuer by comparison). Poe worked hard on the details as you can tell by the adventure of Hans Pfaall, and writes technically well. At the same time, he succeeds in bringing characters to life and describes scenes to the point that you feel like you are there. When I read something like this I am reminded why they call them "classics" in the first place. Can't wait to do volume two and favorites like "The Raven" and "Fall of the House of Usher."

First, this isy favorite short story. Since receiving this, my kids (8-10) have asked me to read it to them several times. My only suggestion would be to make the beating of the heart more audible. You can get it but not really hear it. They hold it and pass it around, but a little sound would be nice, since it is the sound of the heart that is central to the story.

I am disappointed in that I had specifically sought The Gold Bug. I needed it for a reference. I have always enjoyed Poe' s ability to capture the reader's curiosity immediately and set the scene with rich details.

Anything Edgar Allan Poe wrote is gripping and worth every penny. I am satisfied with this purchase and would do it again.
