A very complete and well written introduction to the craft of orchestration. Some sections are greatly expanded from the third edition, and some are barely touched at all.The publisher takes the book into the digital era by replacing the accompanying CD with a website where you can listen to the examples. HOWEVER, hidden in the small print of the user agreement it says that you only get access to the media files for one year (!!). If you want to have access to the files after that time, you have to pay another 40 dollars per year that you want to access them. They never advertise this at the time of sale, which I think is very misleading.It is clear that the publisher does not offer this upgrade for the user's convenience, but rather to squeeze money out of the pockets of their primarily student audience. Until they address this issue, you're probably better off buying the third edition, which comes with a regular CD that never expires.EDIT (4 Oct 2017): A year after this review I can confirm that my access has expired. I now have the option to add another 180 days (NOT an entire year as reported earlier) for $40. The website also says that my access expired 3 months after buying the book, as opposed to the one year I read in the user agreement. Please draw your own conclusions.

One reason I was willing to pay for this extremely expensive book was that the ad promised that "The Fourth Edition invites students to experience the instruments through online audio and video recordings and now offers more coverage of writing for band." note: NO INDICATION THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ACCESS!When the book came, it had a card in it with the web site URL, a password, and instructions for setting up your access -- with NO INDICATION THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ACCESS!I went through the process in question, with NO INDICATION THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ACCESS!Then after a year, I found my access blocked, and a message that if I wanted to keep access you better give us some money, bub.They can of course charge for their web site access if they want to. But to advertise that the extremely high price of this book includes web access with NO INDICATION THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ACCESS! and then to include instructions for access in the book with NO INDICATION THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ACCESS! and then to have you go through the registration process with NO INDICATION THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR ACCESS! and then to spring it on you later that to keep access you have to give them still more money than the unconscionably high price they have already charged -- in other words, TO SELL YOU A TRIAL SUBSCRIPTION WHILE ALLOWING YOU TO ASSUME IT IS A PERMANENT SUBSCRIPTION --is very clearly unethical. This company ought to be ashamed of itself.

I'm just looking at the book for the first time, but as a string player myself, I can already tell that the book hasn't been proofread very carefully. (especially for a 4th edition!) I've already encountered a number of errors and inaccuracies (a lot of them having to do with fingerings on string instruments), and it makes me wonder if there will be more errors relating to other instruments that I'm less familiar with that will therefore be more difficult for me to catch...Overall though, it seems like a useful resource to have. And I agree with the other reviews that making you pay more to extend the access to the examples online is totally bogus. I guess it's geared towards people using the book for one semester and then just forgetting about it, but for those of us who'd like to keep referring to the examples in the book, it's really annoying.

Good textbook just no audio to go along with the tracks. Most textbooks nowadays have a code through which you can access listening libraries online with the purchase of a textbook. This one there isnt audio with it. Other than that, very compact and good. Perfect size. It's not one of those big, heavy textbooks that you need to carry around.

Excellent book, clear examples, great learning tool. Every course should use it.Downside: Have to buy music separately. Should required to include music disks with the actual god damn book.

Great working book, ideal for the amateur musician who's making film music, like me.

Polymer clay is gaining in popularity, and with that popularity comes a variety of books that cover much of the same territory. Judy Belcher's book takes a fresh approach. Judy investigates the many styles of other decorative art forms and applies the characteristics of those art forms to clay. The results are stunning, enlightening and invigorating. Batik, millefiori, lampwork, quilting, cloisonne...all these forms--and more--are applied to clay.While this book was not targeted towards the beginning clayer, it does have a variety of projects at many skill levels, enbabling all who read it to successfully complete the project and learn the technique.Judy's skill with clay, her eye for design, her love of the medium and her imaginative spirit all come through in this book. I'm still stunned with her attempt at imitating pointillism--paintings created by using tiny dots of color--using polymer clay.This book will definitely be getting a bit of wear and tear. I've read it twice from cover to cover, and I continue to go through it to learn more.

First--as noted with the low-star reviews, this book is not for beginners, and not for everyone. The book presumes a working knowledge of polymer clay techniques and doesn't try to fill that gap. Do not buy this as your first PC book. The book is also aimed at a very high-end audience, people who want to make fine craft. Most of the examples could easily win display space at the top craft shows, with $2000 booth fees. I recognize some of these slides from ads in Niche and Crafts Report and maybe even American Craft. Not your average street fair stuff.That said, this is NOT your average street fair stuff. If you've been hanging around the edges of PC, knowing that it had possibilities and wondering why it was you never really liked any of the work you saw, buy Belcher. If the Lark book about PC makes you breathe hard and you can't figure out how to make those items, buy this book.Two very revealing quotes: "The precise cuts and angles in this millefiori cane took days to construct." (Sandra McCaw) "Taking up to a month to build a single cane," (Sarah Nelson Shriver). OK. We're talking mastery here. PC holding its own with faceted stones and silver settings. PC that looks like adult jewelry and not just something I'd wear on Saturday morning. There's a lot in here I'm never going to make, but for the techniques I couldn't work out on my own and for the inspiration, it's the best.(But it still doesn't tell how McCaw builds her canes...)

Judy Belcher uses a large variety of the traditional techniques of art to propel her experimentation with polymer clay in new directions. For example, she looks at painting, sculpture, ceramics, and so on. Clearly a virtuoso, she shows us how a creative artist finds inspiration in artistic traditions. A project is included for each tradition, and she also shows us how she makes those incredible mosaic tiles shown in the bracelet on the cover. A great read for those who love art history, and really gets the creative juices flowing for a polymer clay artist.

Judy Belcher has written an inspirational and educational book that will appeal to novice and experienced polymer clay artists alike. The photography is used thoughtfully to illustrate the techniques and present gallery work. Belcher includes polymer clay pierces inspired by traditional work done in glass; metal;fiber;painting and drawing; stone, bone and wood and sculpture and ceramics. I would not want Belcher's book to be the only book about polymer clay in my library but it is an excellent reference when trying to achieve a particular effect for my work.

Really liked this book. Wish there were some more techniques shown but loved the multiple gallery's they showed to give you ideas of projects to make.

This book is great for both people new to clay and people that have worked with clay.There is so much clear information contained in this book. I highly recommend this bookfor anyone interested in clay art.

but i think i wanted more instructions on the techniques. In at least one case, the instructions provided created alot of extra work and expense, at least for me, which is why i gave the book only 4 stars. But overall a good idea for a book and nice effort, which will provide many with new techniques and ideas.

I met this author in Tamarak where she was selling her book and displaying pieces she had made. Her work is SO impressive, and the contributing artists are equally so. Several of my friends saw my book once I got it home and bought it immediately themselves! Her work is very detailed and original--a terrific resource as well as a beautiful book! You will NOT regret this purchase!

New Hampshire, on the other hand, is very conservative and its first in the country Presidential primary makes it the center of the American political universe every four years. People in Vermont wear funny sandals and talk about world peace. New Hampshire residents sell liquor at toll booths and drive without seat belts. The one thing they agree on is their dislike of Mssachusetts.Every weekend the roads are full of European sedans in custom colors packed with casual clothing and the latest sporting equipment bearing Massachusetts plates. Every driver is in a major hurry to relax; woe to anyone who gets in front of them on the road. But, once they get outside of Massachusetts, they stop at every stone wall, covered bridge and quain country store so quickly that they activate their car's air bags. The other thing that people from Massachusetts do on weekends is shop at outlet malls. Seeing (or more accurately, hearing) several women all wearing noisy nylon jogging suits, and making a beeline for the nearest sale rack, is something to behold.Vermont looks like a postcard. New Hampshire's largest city, Manchester, has a main street that concludes in a dead end. People in Vermont go out to eat and listen to National Public Radio. The first thing one sees in New Hampshire is a toll booth where the attendant has trouble making change from a $5 bill, followed by a state liquor store.This book is hilarious and a little eye-opening for this native New Englander. It equally insults the people of both states, it's very easy to read, and is highly recommended.

My copy arrived this afternoon and I can't put it down. Rarely has a book captured the soul of a time as well as this one does.Every page is filled with words and images that allow anyone who was personally connected with The Haight to recapture those precious days. For those who never had a personal connection, this book is a goldmine of information that really allows you to understand the impact that that place and that time had on our society. Even today.Pretty much everyone knows that Jim Marshall was the greatest rock photographer in history. But what is clear from this 296 page monster is the fact that he was also a first-class historian who captured the shots that allow us to place context around the iconic photos we all cherish.Sure the photos of Jimi at Monterey, Janis, Dylan, The Beatles and the Dead (and TONS MORE) are all here. but for me the most interesting photos are those that show us the whole scene. The music. The atmosphere. Stanley Mouse. The tension between generations. Hippies. Straights. The brilliant Bill Graham. Race relations. Krishna devotion.Marshall's eye captured ALL OF IT. And it's all here. Hundreds and hundreds of photos.Some of my favorites...a photo of a note on a phone booth warning "don't say anything on this phone that you wouldn't say to a cop"....a picture of tourists in their cars driving through the Haight and looking both shocked and fascinated by what they see...and a shot of Jimi playing a free concert in the Panhandle in 1967. The look on Jimi's face as he squeezes a sound from his guitar is one for the ages (I WANT ONE!).To be honest, this book ought to be adopted by every college in the world that has a course on the 60s. I was lucky enough to be in college in Palo Alto, just down from The City, from the late '60s to the early '70s. I was (and still am) a rabid music fan. I spent many an afternoon in the Haight and in the Panhandle area at free happenings and concerts. I was there for the free outdoor concerts by The Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and many, many other local bands. A couple of music-loving friends and I saw riveting performances by Janis Joplin with Big Brother (very loud), the original Santana Blues Band, and all the other fine bands from both the area and from outside California at the Fillmore and Avalon ballrooms. I was there for the People's Park fiasco, the free speech gatherings, and all the rest. I saw the tour buses that rolled through the Haight area to see the hippies and watched as street people held up pieces of mirror to reflect back on the "straights". And I was there for the "death of hippie" walk too. I was very lucky to have pretty much seen and heard and absorbed it all.This fine book is one of the best I've seen that gives a feeling of actual involvement, of "being there", being a part of it all instead of just another photographer taking pictures of the "weirdos with long hair and funny clothes". These photos take me back to those streets and those times when everything was in flux, anything could (and usually did) happen, and anything seemed possible.For those others like myself who were there, this collection of photographs will awaken memories from those days. For those who weren't around or couldn't be there to experience it all in person, this book will give you insight into an unrepeatable period when everything seemed new and exciting, and slightly twisted. That era wasn't just about the "name" bands, the wild thrift shop clothing, or the bra-less girls, the "love" beads and incense. It was about real people looking for something different--some made it and some didn't. There are a lot of faces in these pictures that go to the heart of that period and locale. That's the real story. And this great book takes you there.

Marvelous book. Selvin showcases his fabulous shots of the Haight from its early years in the early/mid-sixties, its explosion in '67, and the downfall that inevitably came. Black & white as well as colored pictures; shots of hippies, head & psychedelic shops, great musicians, and the bewildered residents of the Haight who's world changed forever at the hippy invasion. Commentaries from musicians like the members of Jefferson Airplane, Donovan, and others.

* This "coffee table" sized book is a great history lesson on the Haight, and all the cultural intrigues that captivated and inspired the youth of our nation during it's reign.* Marshall's photo documentation of the era is often fascinating if not stunning.* The accompanying narrative history is a wonderful compliment to the photography.* I think for less than $40 it is... A BARGAIN.

I really like this book. It is a beautiful big, thick, very substantial coffee table book. I spent the day looking at the photos. There were many of Janis Joplin that I had not seen before. I hadn't seen any of these photos before, which was nice. Enjoyable book that you will want to have.

Stunning. I had the opportunity to work with Jim Marshall and publish many of his photographs when I was the Directorof Photography at Rolling Stone in the 70s. A wild, unpredictable and immensely talented photographer, he always capturedthe decisive moment during those wonderful and zany days of the Haight in all its glory. I had such a good timetraveling down memory lane with this book. Jim was a "One Of A Kind" artist.

Excellent book! My daughter loved it and I bought a second copy for myself. Well written and great photos. Likely the best book out there about that crazy time and place...

This is thee book if you want to get started in deep learning with keras in R. It is a great intro to neural networks and how they learn. This book also goes over the syntax, functions, and organization of neural nets in keras. Overall a great book.

Great book with examples. Took me from zero to expert

This is an excellent introduction to deep learning, especially if you have intermediate or better skills with the R programming language. The book focuses on using the Keras library and TensorFlow (with "light instructions" relative to Theano but no coverage of CNTK). The topics covered include fundamentals of deep learning and neural networks, how to set up your own deep-learning environment (Ubuntu is recommended; Windows is not), image classification and generation tasks, and deep learning for text and sequences.The authors explain: "Deep learning is a specific subfield of machine learning: a new take on learning representations from data that puts an emphasis on learning successive layers of increasingly meaningful representations. The deep in deep learning isn't a reference to any kind of deeper understanding achieved by the approach; rather, it stands for this idea of successive layers of representation. How many layers contribute to a model of the data is called the depth of the model. Other appropriate names for the field could have been layered representation learning and hierarchical representations learning. Modern deep learning often involves tens or even hundreds of successive layers of representations--and they're all learned automatically from exposure to training data. Meanwhile, other approaches to machine learning tend to focus on learning only one or two layers of representation of the data; hence, they're sometimes called shallow learning."Later in the book, they also note: "The fundamental issue in machine learning is the tension between optimization and generalization. Optimization refers to the process of adjusting a model to get the best performance possible on the training data (the learning in machine learning), whereas generalization refers to how well the trained model performs on data is has never seen before. This book is great in several ways, but most notably it effortlessly ties together theory and application in regards to living our lives together for the glory of God. Rather than complain about the state of culture, Willis actually shows Christians how to do something about it by living together in gospel-centered communities. If just a small percentage of the Church lived this way, the state of American Christianity would be drastically different. I pray that this book makes its way into small groups all over the country. It could very well be a game changer.
