I have been not so patiently waiting for Chronicles of a Radical Hay's release, and, of course, one hates to get one's hopes up too high, but I'm thrilled to report that I absolutely adored the story. The humor, the humaneness, the characters, the dialogue, the pace, the way Lorna L captures the Midwest mentality is brilliant. Such a charming, bittersweet, and flat-out wonderful story. Don't miss this one!

How to describe this lovely story? Briefly, a beloved opinion columnist at a small town Minnesota newspaper has had a stroke. She's in a coma, probably one from which she'll never recover, and in the meantime, the editor of the paper has decided to reprint choice columns spanning her 5 decade long career, and some choice responses to her columns. One of those responses earned her the name she took in stride with the good humor she displayed throughout her entire life, as the writer called her a radical rag, because of her liberal leanings in her musings. The editor's teenage son spends many afternoons at the paper helping sort through the many articles, picking and choosing which ones should make the paper and we get to read everything from Haze's (the radical hag herself) very sadly brief 3 year marriage, she lost him to a massive heart attack, but it's obvious that the marriage was absolutely drenched in love, to her stance on abortion, all the way up to the modern day election. Maybe or maybe not luckily, she didn't have to see the outcome of that disaster. One of my favorite quotes from the book is "By bringing us into their own world, they bring us into the whole world," and I think that's the mark of a truly good columnist. She managed to relate whatever her subject was about, first to her own little corner of the world before expanding into a seemingly huge subject.This book is extraordinary. It covers so many different people's lives but it shows how Haze, a truly radical hag, said with all the love a heart can hold, brought so many people together through her decades long writing career. Landvik has managed to truly bring this character off the page and make her larger than life, to the point where she seems more than just a fictional character. From heartbreak to adolescent awakening with a few delicious recipes thrown in, this book is a wonderland of written emotions. It's one of my favorite stories so far in 2019 and I'm sure it's going to stick with me for a good long while.

When 81-year-old Haze Evans suffers a massive stroke that puts her into a coma, the readers and staff of the Granite Creek Gazette in Granite Creek MN are devastated. Haze has been a regular columnist for the paper since 1964, and her years of reporting chronicle her life, the town’s life, and the events that shook the nation and the world during those years. As a tribute to Haze and because the townsfolk would miss their regular dose of Haze, publisher Susan McGrath decides to republish selected columns from her years at the paper. Susan’s 14-year-old son Sam has just come to work at the paper for the summer, and Susan assigns him to go through the 52 years of Haze’s writing.It was obvious why Haze became a beloved figure to the people of Granite Creek from the opening paragraph of the book, an excerpt from her column: “July 15, 2016 Minus what that vicious lying mirror tells me, and the knees that crackle the kindling every time I take the stairs, and the ear canals that have muddled with silt of late, eighty-one feels an awful lot like twenty-nine. Okay, maybe fifty-three.” I was quite upset when she had her stroke, and I had only known her for 2 pages! The person of Haze typifies the kind of writing that I have come to expect of Landvik; she portrays characters that are memorable, believable, and (mostly) likable.Given her stroke on page 2, we do not get to know Haze through a standard story line. The book alternates between Haze’s columns, as republished in the 2016-2017 Gazette, and narrative of the present-days lives of the paper’s staff. There are also a few throwbacks to Haze’s earlier career that fill in some information about her life. The transitions made the book a little less smooth than a more traditional structure would have, but the columns are the raison d’etre of the story.If Haze is the star of the book, young Sam deserves the title of co-star, and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about his coming-of-age socially and intellectually. It was great fun to read his journalism class’s discussions of Haze’s columns, especially as they reacted to events that to them were “history”. There were fun cameo roles as well, such as Susan’s curmudgeonly neighbor, who had been commenting on Haze’s columns about as long as she had been writing them!I am old enough to have lived through all of the years covered by Haze’s columns, and Landvik did an excellent job of writing up the times as I remember them and selecting events to portray.Haze wrote about all aspects of life, but since she had been labeled a “radical hag” by a disgruntled reader, it is not surprising that the emphasis in the columns that were reprinted was on major news stories, especially those with a political bent. And, since Haze has her stroke in the summer of 2016, it is perhaps not surprising that the end of the book puts what the people who knew and read Haze learned from her into the context of today’s political climate. This will, I think, lead to some major differences of opinion within book groups who read this book! In today’s climate, I very often use my fiction reads as an escape from the news of the day, and Landvik is just the kind of author I would be inclined to turn to on such occasions because of her witty writing and well-done characters. The last thing I want to be reminded of is the civil discord of society today. If you are looking for the same kind of escape, you might want to defer reading about the Radical Hag to another time. If, on the other hand, you are willing to let a small-town paper and people in Minnesota help you feel that we can move through this time, as we have through other difficult eras, then Landvik and Haze may have something to say to you.PS The book really does include some of Haze’s recipes. At long last, the eagerly-anticipated finale to the Extinction Cycle. I was very glad to finally be able to get my hands on this (Oh, the hardships of waiting for the author to write, then edit, a new book!) and dig in.And I was not disappointed. Not one bit. It was really good to get back in touch with Reed, Kate, Horn, Fitz and Rachel. Can't say I was as pleased to be reaquainted with some of the other characters, but I suppose villains must have their moments. I didn't do a re-read of the previous book prior to picking this one up, so I did have to stop and think a few times at the beginning about just where the previous book had left off - but that was my own fault for not being prepared. Smith gave an adequate account to recall events to my memory, and that was all that he needed to do. I actually found it fun to be reminded of where things were at. One of the hazards of reading a lot of books. Also, huge kudos to Smith for not dropping a single thread. This story is very complex, with action taking place all over the Northern Hemisphere between Alaska and Rome, and each story line was tightly controlled and clearly related.The quality of writing in this book was of a very high standard, and exactly what I've come to know and expect from Smith. The storytelling too was exemplary - Smith certainly likes to keep us on the edges of our nerves! But then, what would a Smith book be if that wasn't the case?Overall, a MUST read for Extinction Cycle fans, and if you like post-apocalyptic fiction mixed with military action, biomedical disaster and some (highly-plausible, thus scary) science fiction, then do pick up Extinction Horizon, the first in the series. A solid five stars from me.Thank you for the wild ride!!

I need to start this review with some honesty. This is the first Extinction Cycle book that I've read... You see, I've happily enjoyed the performance of Bronson Pinchot throughout the first 6 installments--- so this was a new experience for me. (I found myself trying to do Mr. Pinchot's voices in my head while reading and it made me appreciate him even more). Back to Extinction War-this book is the best piece of art Nicholas Sansbury Smith has produced to date. There are so many examples throughout this story that had me reacting out loud, but it felt like War produced that effect every other page! I've spoke in other reviews about NSS' amazing ability to develop characters but I now see this is where he truly shines. These characters felt like family far before this point, and Smith beautifully (and painfully!) keeps the reader's heart in an constant state of frenzy regarding their fate. When I realized I was nearing the end of the book, I slowed my pace to a crawl, not wanting the story to to end. This proved fruitless-I needed this story more than Flathmann needs his booze. The last several chapters of the story provided tears, fist pumps, and a desire for more. Thank you for this story, Mr Smith. It was a HELL of a ride!

The Variants are continuing to evolve and they never know what type of beast they will be fighting. Hero’s pop up everywhere, under a Cathedral in Italy, aboard naval ships and in the safe zones. This book is a must have for enthusiasts and interested scholars. The book is filled with many pictures, illustrations and original renderings of Disneyland, and the subsequent other parks. The conceptual development of the original Disneyland is the main focus of the book that admirably discusses the many details involved in the process. The amazing part for me is the scholarly research, and the well written quality of the text. The subject is well examined for the volume of information it covers. It is the first book I have come across that credit's Walt Disney's innovative process of applying film set design to a real 3D environment using an over-ridding narrative to connect it all. The scholarly research by art historians and architects for the Canadian exhibition is impressive, which is done without the control of the Disney Corporation. The scholarly nature of the book lends a new dimensionality to the understanding of Disneyland as an innovative artistic development, and a new architectural expression.Unlike other texts I have read about Disney architecture, this one takes on the subject from the art historical perspective examining the process that creates a new architectural form. Other books seem to veer away from this in favor of the new, celebrated corporate architecture at Disney company headquarters, or the replication of the model at newer Disney parks. By concentrating on the original development of Disneyland as a unique architectural concept of Walt Disney's, and his special team of designers, the idea is established as creating the foundation for everything else that comes after. This difference is insightful, and makes the understanding of the original design clearer and more significant.I highly recommend this book for the wealth of information it provides, and the good read it is. Even for a seasoned Walt Disney enthusiast, like me, it provides a new awareness of the multi-dimensional qualities of the form created, and it makes a rich addition to information previously unknown.

This is a wonderful book for those Disney fans who want to know more about the history of the Disney Theme Parks. There are a lot interesting pictures; some never even seen. Very well detailed and interesting reading. All of those 'curious-types' should buy this book!
