I got this book for my 11th birthday in 1994, I loved this book, I had the story about Dr. John Snow and Cholera memorized. I misplaced the book over the years so I bought used and it just happened to arrive on my birthday - 20 years to the day after I first got it. It is kind of dated, the pictures are very "90s" but it is entertaining and educational. Some information may be mildly outdated, but not anything that is incorrect, I would recommend it for any kid that is interested in geography, history or environmental science. In terms of the used book itself, it was in excellent condition, still had the tissue paper protecting the moving parts and even had all the foreign coins on the back cover. Very impressive for a 20 year old book.

It's ok- I don't understand the hype, and I would for certain buy from ebay before I'd pay the prices listed here.I bought this a few years ago when I was first starting homeschooling and had to "Buy all the stuffs!" but wish I could sell it because it has honestly just sat on my shelf and collected dust.None of us (very avid bookreaders) are interested in it after glancing through it.Bought back when they were in 2nd grade & they are now headed for 5th grade.

Looked for this book for ages before Amazon came to the rescue. It's the same book I remember from my elementary years; recycled Russian pop can cover, spinners still in place, population sand-clock still attached. The only reason this went from an obvious 5 star rating down to a 4-star rating is because I wasn't expecting to be missing two of the most vital parts of the book: the page including the global "tennis ball" had been removed as well as the coins from the back page. Still absolutely in love with my purchase, though.

Missed this book. I had it as a kid. Really nice the coins were still in the back. They took the rice out though. Haha. Still nice find/buy.

A classic from my childhood, I purchased a copy for a friend with young children. I found the material to remain relevant in 2018, and the included materials and exercises to be well designed.

I had one of these books as a child and it was very enlightening to my little childish brain when I was about 10 it gave me a broader view of the world. I am thrilled to have been able to find it again and pass it on to my 10 year old!

This is a Klutz book, which wasn't clear to me. It really is like visiting museum, there are things to look at, lots of different displays (text boxes) lots of pictures, and tons of information. My 9 year old who does not love to read, thumbs through it often, coming up with another quirky fact. He loved the coins from various nations and the rice servings and the hands on feel to it. This is not a book, it's an experience.My son looking at this goes, I loved that book! It gave hours of fun.

I have been reading westerns for 55 years and I will be reading more of Mr Robertson. I have found a new western author. I have also found a new western character who I want to follow in his travels West. Major Joshua Logan is a man who is as big,brave, and relentless as I have ever read about. I finished the novel in 5 hrs and only put it down to eat supper Great story line and very good character development. The story had many twists and turns and some great subplots that just surprised me ( like the Kickapoos). I will be going right to The Savage Valley (book 2) next. Mr Robertson, I hope to see book 3 soon!

Nice read. Characterization was excellent. You really like the main characters, really hate the antagonists and enjoy the bit players. The plot is formulaic Western, which is fine with me, and moves along toward a predictable, but satisfying end. The dialogue is a little sappy. The constant exchange of compliments and platitudes gets old. The players like and respect each other. We get it. There are some editing errors that are a little distracting: Will Penny appears for a moment and you're thinking 'What?', but he becomes Scott again shortly thereafter. Overall, I recommend the book to Western novel fans.

This fast moving story is as exciting as any western I have had the opportunity to follow, and I have been fortunate enough to read a passel of outstanding quality books. This is definitely a family-friendly, and very heartwarming,d continuous story that is very descriptive, with the many accomplishments of Josh, Pat, Bill, Fianna, and the entire crew of the Nance ranch community! The camaraderie of this special group of people created a setting of continuously ongoing adventures that satisfies any true lover of great western storytelling! The storylines successfully depicts what I perceived as true western folklore, and the selection of characters certainly was impressive in their appropriately roles. There is never a dull, or non interesting episode from beginning to end. An outstanding display of true western adventures by an exceptionally talented author, who did an amazing job once again! Definitely recommend this compassionate, and heartwarming masterpiece to anyone, regardless of your reading preference. This all encompassing detailed story will definitely appease anyone's expectations, and the ending will certainly prepare you for the next exciting story of the Logan family!

I've been a Louis L'Amour fan since I discovered his books in my high school library. This is the first western author that I have read that I enjoyed near as much as L'Amour. The plot was solid. The story moved at a good pace. I was entertained thoroughly by the book. I'll be reading more. In fact, I've already started the next one.

Well-written, while reminiscent in many ways of Louis L'amour, the pacing and the style are different, that is NOT a criticism, merely an observation.In all the author's books he follows through with a chapter or 'epilogue' to complete the story of the lives involved, this provides a sense of closing to this reader that is much appreciated.Good clean story, lots of action, all of Mr. Robertson's books can be described in this way.

Because my reading about the west has bee pretty limited, mainly to mostly to Louis L'amour; there is a tendency to compare other books to his, and leading characters to Tell Sackett. In this book, I think Donald Robertson and Josh Logan fared quite well. The story grabbed me right at the beginning, the code of honor and ethics that Logan lived by made me want to read more, and the relationship with his horse was just great. If you are not familiar with Robertson, I would suggest you give this book a try. I will say that his short story, "The Old Ranger", hooked me, and this story brought me in. Even the 2 chapter preview about Callum Logan, MAKE me want to buy the next one and read it!

Such a good book! No sex or profanity! I love westerns, and this is very well written. I can't wait to read the second book in the series, Savage Valley! Think I'll go start it tonight.

A very interesting tale told from 3 teen friends perspectives. I liked getting to know all 3 protagonists so my only complaint is the book was too short and I did not get enough time with them! Still worth the read IMO. Especially if you like Aussie authors.

His friend Bongo gets wasted to block out the memories of the little brother he can no longer see and his addict mom and abusive stepdad. Casey is the girl that they both love. She longs to get away from her controlling father and be free. This is a verse novel and it’s been forever since I read a novel in verse. I forgot how fragile writing a verse novel can be because either you can accomplish it or it will fail. This novel was in the middle of the plain between crashing and soaring above the sky. I adore poetry and verse always fascinates me, but I don’t think some characters should be written in verse. Some stories are meant for it and some are not. This novel alternates between Luke, Casey, and Bongo, but instead of alternating in the usual Ellen Hopkins fashion of one character then another and repeat this book focuses on one character for a few hundred pages and then alternates to the next character.The main female character is Casey. Casey longs to be free. She is the perfect of example of a caged bird and when she finally breaks free it’s refreshing. While Casey is in her house it always felt so trapped, but once she finds her way out no matter the circumstances you can feel Casey’s happiness. Casey’s story was my favorite and she is my favorite character in Out of This Place. I liked seeing Casey grow and become a different person.Kick-Butt Heroine Scale: 8.5The main male characters are Luke and Bongo. By the fact that these boys are both in love with Casey you would probably think that there is a love triangle. Rest assured that is not the case. Luke is in love with Casey, but Casey has always kept him as more of friend or brother. He’s very over protective of her and questions her personal life a lot. Bongo is also in love with Casey, but would never hurt his best friend. He never acts on his love for her, but Casey had wanted him to several times. Luke is an OK guy, but I personally thought his story was boring. This is where what I mentioned about verse comes in. For me Luke’s story in verse was unnecessary and really Luke didn’t know what he wanted in life or even who he was. This made him incredibly boring. Bongo was much better to read about in verse, but it still didn’t flow as nicely as Casey’s story had. Bongo though stole my heart from the moment Luke talked about how Bongo not able to see his brother destroyed him. I liked Bongo’s story, but while he was homeless for that period of time the story dragged for me. He seemed to be to lost and I was worried that the story would stay that way, but it didn’t.Swoon Worthy Scale: Luke: 7 Bongo: 8Character Scale: 7.5I loved the setting of Australia. I also read this at pretty good time since they go to the beach a lot. The writer did a good job of showing how a person’s life evolves, but sometimes this evolvement dragged a bit too much. Out of This Place is a novel about finding who you are and I liked how Cameron showed this.Cover Thoughts: I love the cover it’s so beautiful. The only thing that bothers me is how Casey is holding one of the boy’s hands. He applies for a welfare traineeship and moves away leaving Casey and Bongo behind.Casey has a strict life with her father making all her decisions for her, and who's constantly reminding her that she was a mistake and never wanted. Her grandmother is the only one who seems to love her and help her, So when she suffers a stroke, Casey is left to fend for herself with one sole piece of advise from her:"Never let the them win."When she saves up enough money, she runs away, but one decision could send her down the same path or could end up saving her.Bongo is slipping through the cracks ever since his brother was taken away from him. His ever-angry father beats him at home, his addict mother has abandoned him, and he can't be with the girl he loves because his best friend is in love with her too. After he runs away, he moves from shelter to shelter trying to find his place in the world.Every decision they make moves them farther away from each other, but one tiny miracle will unite them again.I wasn't expecting much after reading the first couple of pages and by the time I noticed how deeply engrossed I was, I was completely blindsided. I was swept away by their stories' and felt their pain. I love that it's written in free verse, which is poetry like. I believe this is what enabled me to connect so deeply with the characters. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a story of endurance and friendship.

It has been a long time since I've read a book written in verse.I forgot how beautiful and elegant they are. So simple, yet so dynamic. Expertly crafted to convey the most emotion in so little. Especially in the case for Out of This Place, I couldn't peel my eyes from my kindle.I started reading around noon on a beautiful, sunny day. I could have been swimming, but instead I was perched on the swing outside, getting sunburned because I refused to stop reading. I finished the same day and immediately wished it never had to end.So far, not a single Australian author has disappointed me. I'm not sure what is in the air over there, but it has some serious creative flavor.Out of This Place drags you into each of these characters lives. Through the eyes of Luke, Casey, and Bongo, we see how hard it truly is for some people, and how to appreciate the life you were given.I felt so hard for these three. Their lives are so different, yet so similar. But they each find someone worse off than they are.I cried. I smiled. My heart grew every time a new line of verse would begin.Gorgeous writing. Spectacular characters. This book is remarkable.
