Born in Ghana with a deformed left leg, Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah experienced stigma as a result of his disability: his father abandoned the family, and many assumed that the boy would be little more than a burden. However, with the encouragement of his mother, Yeboah refused to give up, hopping to school (instead of walking) and even learning to play soccer and cycle, despite receiving no extra help or accommodations. Thompson's lucidly written text explains how Yeboah cycled 400 miles in 2001 to raise awareness, forever changing how Ghanaians perceived those with disabilities. This is a lovely story, beautifully illustrated. I sent it to my daughter-in-law who teaches a class for disabled children. She said that they loved the story and that it evoked more conversation than anything she has yet read to them.

Before laying my thoughts on the importance of this book, this recorded History by Dr. Gilbert it is in my view important to understand what the basis of not only the trial meant at the end of the war but for the innocent victims of the Concentration Camps. Nothing in this diary work hit me harder than the details of words that Dr. Gilbert used in the recording of the interview he held with Colonel Rudolf Hoess; the Commandant of Auschwitz on 9 April 1946. Hoess commanded the camp from May of 1940 to December of 1943 – “efficiency” never had a more diabolical meaning and existence, yet matter-of-fact employment of the term. It is extremely difficult to fathom and believe today in 2017 that “efficiency” would ever have had this sort of application to the destruction of people, classes of people, people that deserved protection from the most hideous and disgusting purpose to the existence of mankind; I also doubt that never in the history of mankind had that this hatred ever existed on an “efficient” scale of this magnitude. Herein lay the facts, the terms, the reality of the truth to the demented henchmen that ran a machine for purposes that today I still cannot fully comprehend – I am not alone. Many good people who aren’t perfect people feel the same way. Having lost a Belgian uncle to a concentration camp during this war it is in my mind an equation whereby I cannot internally equate any reason that would support any belief that this was “necessary”. Gold teeth melted and sent to the financial institutions, hair for pillows, confiscated property, the removal of civil rights of citizens and some of which that had in fact fought for this same nation during the First World War. (See my review please on “Somme – Into the Breach” on one Lieutenant F.L. Cassel.)Dr. Gilbert had provided a psychological blot test to all the defendants following the Indictment Phase of this court proceeding. During discussions in the cell of Hoess that followed the test, Dr. Gilbert proceeded to discuss the Auschwitz Camp. Hoess provided the information that roughly 2.5 million Jews were exterminated (as opposed to “killed”) during his tenure. Dr. Gilbert had asked how this was technically possible – Hoess quickly replied in return with a question “Technically?” then went on to state that he (Dr. Gilbert) was thinking of this all wrong. Hoess referenced in conversation that one had to break the system up to 24 hours; and, in 24 hours 10,000 people were “killed” (he used the word “exterminated” again and I cannot bring myself to think in of innocence in this manner). Hoess went on to explain that there were 6 chambers total; 2 large ones and 4 smaller ones. The 2 larger could accommodate 2,000 persons, the 4 smaller ones 1,500 all within a 24 hour period – Hoess stated so matter of fact with another correction “…no you don’t figure it right – the killing took the least amount of time – killing 2,000 would take a half an hour…” Hoess went on to state that “…It was the burning that took the most amount of time…” Herein lay the suggestion that many more could have been killed had they only found a more "efficient” manner to dispose of the bodies more quickly. Hoess then went into the logistics of moving the bodies from the chambers to the crematorium and the work that followed. This had to have stunned Dr. Gilbert – he hid his feelings well; however, the few words that follow within this passage made me feel as though I was sitting next to him, looking at Hoess.The author was the Psychologist at the Nuremberg Trials and had unfettered access to all the accused. Dr. Gilbert begins the first chapter by introducing each of the defendants though not in chronological order – this is based more on IQ tests that were administered to each and with each, Dr. Gilbert had brief discussions. This added an interest point for me, though I admit for no particular reason. His perception of Albert Speer I thought was most interesting in this early chapter and covered a mere couple of paragraphs. Having read “Spandau” and “Inside the Third Reich” the internal thoughts I had of Speer were somewhat confirmed in this early part of the book. The IQ tests and discussions began before the trial began but directly after the indictments had been handed to each of the defendants. As the writings of Dr. Gilbert would show based on his direct interactions with all of the accused – Albert Speer was the one constant throughout the whole process of this trial. That is to say – he never wavered from his conviction of the waste the Nazi Party brought to the world nor of the destruction it brought to the nation of Germany as a result of the same. He was truly sorry for his support of Hitler in the early years, this came to a head in the latter years – his testimony to the Nuremburg trial only made one mad man Goering more crazy than he was. Even after a near year of trials and imprisonment, both Dr. Goldensohn and Dr. Gilbert’s analysis conveyed the professional opinion that Herr Goering was still a drug addict though he had not had any form of access to the heroine or amphetamines he had during the final days of the Third Reich.Death toll for the nations that fought during the Second World War – this as a reminder why the Nuremberg Trial was a necessary component to the war, atrocities, and the willingness of breaking of international agreements to sovereign nations across the globe – as an American, I am equally reminded that it was the Imperial Forces of Japan that brought our own entry into this war; additionally, it was Germany that declared war upon the United States and not the other way around.Casualties listed by caused upon by armed belligerent forces:Allied: 14,276,800 (estimate – 10 million listed as Soviet Soldiers)Axis: 6,582,000 (estimate – German numbers have never been officially verified during the World War II and nor for World War I)Civilian Casualties:Allied: 25,986,500 (estimate – 10 million listed as Soviet Civilians)Axis: 1,686,000 (estimate – German numbers have never been officially verified)A refresher for the results of the Nuremburg Trials are posted here for the arm chair historian and the otherwise curious. There were four counts provided against the defendants within the indictment:1. Conspiracy to commit crimes alleged in other counts;2. Crimes against peace;3. War crimes;4. Crimes against humanity.1. Herman Goering: Guilty on all 4 counts; Death by Hanging; committed suicide before judgement had been rendered; the Lutheran Chaplain refused to provide last rites as Goering never admitted anything of wrong doing and his pompous style was indicative of the drug addict he was and remained to the very end.2. Rudolf Hess: Guilty on counts 1 and 2; Life in Prison.3. Joachim von Ribbentrop: Guilty on all 4 counts; Death by Hanging.4. Robert Ley: Committed suicide in Prison Cell 25 October 19455. Wilhelm Keitel: Guilty on all 4 counts; Death by Hanging6. Ernst Kaltenbrunner: Guilty on counts 3 and 4; Death by Hanging7. Alfred Rosenberg: Guilty on all 4 counts; Death by Hanging8. Krupp remained technically still under indictment and liable to prosecution in subsequent proceedingsAs with the “Rape of Nanking” I proudly purchased this book at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington D.C. in August of 2016 – the bookstore there is a treasure trove of the saddest stories to history; important people be reminded of what occurred and is a most somber and dignified museum. I will leave this review now; the Holocaust deniers then as now are simply people I do not, nor will ever understand.

This was a fascinating, engaging book. The author does not hold back his opinions on the subjects, and his distaste for some of the defendants' outrageous amorality and cowardice makes it all the more interesting. It is a true "diary," infused with passions and prejudice, and it makes the reader feel like he/she is right there along with the trial observers, eavesdropping on the Nazi leadership's perception of their day(s) of reckoning. We all know how it ends but it's a good and gripping read all the way through.

Dr Gilbert's book, written in 1945/46, provides a fascinating view of the catastrophe that was the second world war. What made it most interesting for me was that I read it immediately after the currently (2012)popular "Paris 1919" - a record of the actions of the participants in WWI in "arranging" the world following the defeat of Germany. Sadly, much of what the Nazi defendants in Nuremberg said about the causes of the rise of Hitler are much more believable now (in retrospect), as are their predictions about the rise of the USSR and the coming of the cold war.I am now reading Goldensohn's book "The Nuremberg Interviews", which provides a companion piece to the foregoing, further supporting the observations made above. I'd recommend all three for a bit of enlightening reading. (Not light, but quite profound.)

This is a stunner of a book. Here we have a Jewish American who speaks German and is a PHD psychologist, and he has direct access to ALL of the criminals at this trial, the architects of the Third Reich and the Jewish Holocaust (less psychopaths Hitler, Himmler, Eichmann, and Goebbels et al). He interviews then before and during the trial and in the moments leading to their (most of them) executions. Fascinating to hear their rationalizations, repentance, prejudices, etc. Just the best book on the trial because of its unique proximity to the minds of these infamous men.

"Nuremberg Diary", by G. M. Gilbert, tells about Dr Gilbert's interactions with the top Nazi war criminals during the first Nuremberg tribunal/trial in 1945/46. Dr Gilbert was the prison psychologist (as opposed to psychiatrist) at Nuremberg, and had unfettered access to the military officers and civilians on trial.Dr Gilbert could speak with the defendants in their own language, and through conversations with them, he was able to draw out their views of the war, of themselves, of their fellow trial-mates, their day-to-day reactions to the trial, as well as their own increasingly desperate attempts to save their own necks. What emerges is stunning in that far from being supermen, the Nazi leaders were generally ordinary men who were given great power in a Faustian bargain with Adolf Hitler, and thereby corrupted to commit horrendous acts of murder and violence against humanity. It is also surprising to see how shallow, vain, and eager to compromise their morals and ideals in the name of power and authority that most of these men were.Dr Gilbert, however, was not necessarily an objective observer. He has clear favorites and enters into verbal sparring matches with some of the defendants. The book is often almost annoyingly repetitive in some of its characterizations, which is perhaps to be expected given that the defendants were on trial for their lives and were under great stress and focusing on their defense.While I don't consider this a perfect book, it is nonetheless an essential book in understanding the Nazi leadership, and how Hitler came to dominate them and use their talents for his own warped plans. Virtually all of the books and articles I've read about Nuremberg have heavily quoted Dr Gilbert's book. If you're a World War II buff, this book should be on your bookshelf.

This is a reduced version of the book Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience (which was excellent.). If you read the first book you won't get much from this one.

A very scant read that hardly delivers on its title. This book focuses primarily on how flow can improve and add meaning to your life. This book does not give much insight on how to create flow or give you much instruction or tools for establishing more flow in your life. Had I known what the book was really about I probably would've skipped this version and just read Csikszentmihalyi's original book on flow.

This book contains useful informations about who, when, where people experience Flow, therefore it gives you some hint to find it. He then discusses how we feel when doing these different types of activities. The two core chapters cover work and leisure. Csikszentmihalyi shows how engagement with ones job and pursuing active hobbies provide more personal satisfaction than passive entertainment and mere lounging. It is this notion that will clash with many people's belief in what makes them happy; happiness being something that Csikszentmihalyi considers a fleeting emotion and different from true contentment. As has been noted by the philosopher A.C. Grayling, if we are after happiness alone, then we can just self-medicate.Other chapters examine how relationships are better if you engage in them, rather than merely meet material obligations to loved ones, and what kinds of personalities are better suited to achieving flow. There is a chapter, as well as some discussion throughout, on how to increase flow in your own life. This gives the book an additional self-help angle (which is what the back cover is trying to market it as.) The final chapter begins with some light philosophizing and quickly degenerates into an off-topic discussion of religion, lacking a thesis and coming across as the ramblings of a stoned first-year college student. Mihaly is one of the truly great minds our time. The book Finding Flow is a less academic (and shorter) version of Mihaly great book: "Flow", which for me is one of the best books I've ever read. Finding Flow offers great insights in how we can get the most from targeted life goals or simple everyday tasks. I wish I would have read this book when I was in high school or college. This book can have a great positive impact on your life.

It's a very interesting read and one that makes you think. It serves very well as motivation/inspiration for finding more flow in your life. But if you already have that desire, it won't do much to help you actually find more flow. As I read it I came up with a few ideas for improving the amount of flow in my life, but no great breakthroughs.In short, it's an interesting and motivating read but it's not a practical guide to implementing it.It does give you the basics, though, if you can figure out how to apply them. The basics are no secret, though: eliminate distractions and focus even if you don't want to. Easier said than done, of course.I'd recommend it to anyone, especially those who may not have figured out that happiness is in the doing not the getting.

This companion to Flow offered some helpful specifics about the effects of different uses of time. It largely reiterates on the themes in Flow, but includes supplementary depth on why we choose to use our time the way we do.

One of the best books about the rise of digital arts and the media.

I eagerly ordered Anna Anthropy's book, being a fan of her important ongoing work in the "indie game" scene. Anna is a creative force and a passionate advocate for games as folk art and digital vehicles for self-expression. She also makes legitimately fun games! This book offers perhaps some of the earliest thoughts in an increasingly public conversation about games' status as art, and serves as a great introduction to an "alternative" world of game development that the average person may not be aware of. This is a large topic simply because of its many facets, and as a shorter read, the book can only act as a primer to these many facets - such as tools for game development, contemporary folk game auteurs, and their games, etc. 'Zinesters is well-written and I think Anna does this topic justice while making the subject accessible to anyone who may have no more experience with game development than simply consuming its output. I think the book falls short in convincing a skeptic that games as art are on the same "level" as the more classic forms. For me, it's an unimportant matter, but some might be looking to this book to convince them. Finally, Anna appears to be of the mind that game creation is a kind of zero-sum, um, game where having less "white male"-developed games is necessary to have more non-"white male"-developed games. Game development is more democratized/open/folk than ever now, while simultaneously "white male" games are consumed more than ever - I think this merely reflects the dichotomy of "pop/mainstream" art and "folk/alternative" art that seems to be present in every artistic medium.

I'm having an enjoyable re-visit of my past (I almost forgot about downloading shareware from BBS) while having my eyes opened to what's going on in the game industry (and what's not going on in the game industry). Guys, don't be afraid about the other side and grab this book.

While the introduction is a little bit bumpy (Anna and I want very different things out of games, and Anna's introduction makes it seem as though the book is almost meant for an exclusively LGBT audience), I found myself won over by her enthusiasm for independent game development. Anna urges you to make something, make anything, and mentions a variety of tools and tricks for churning something out with a minimum of labor. Game development can be very difficult to get in to, so her insistence on easy, personal, fun projects is refreshing and enabling.

I'd love to tell the author how inspiring this book is. As an indie developer, it just makes you feel there's a whole world out there ready to find new games that challenge the big studios' worn out models.It's a VERY interesting read for anyone, not just game developers!

I've never played a game made by Anna Anthropy, but after reading this book, she is one of my favorite game designers. Her enthusiasm for the art form, and for its potential if placed in the right hands (i.e., yours and mine) is genuine and contagious.Rise of the Videogame Zinesters begins with Anthropy's opinions on why true authorship is nearly non-existant in commercial videogames. Her argument is succinct, difficult to contradict, and reads like a treat to any gamer who has grown weary of brown shooters, annual sequels, and bars filling up at the end of every multiplayer match in everything.Anthropy then makes the case for why empowering individuals to make games, the way everyone is empowered to write a story or post a YouTube video, could save the art form from the videogame industry's play-it-safe redundancy.Well, really, the power is already out there, which is the final thing that Anthropy helps her reader to understand, by pointing out resources and examples of how the tools have already been used to make some very special games.Anthropy's book is fun, surprising, and timely; and important read for anyone who cares about videogames.

Though less cerebral than some of her contemporaries (Ian Bogost, for example), Anna Anthropy's work is even more important. Her games (particularly "Dys4ia," an autobiographical game about her gender identity) are simple but affecting.Her message to us is that she isn't special ... that we all can, and should, do as she has done. Although I respect some who have endorsed this book, and the intent of the author was probably good, I could not more strongly advise not to use this guide to Christian prophetic insight. It is simply steeped in occult definitions, and while there is much mention of the bible and some accurate interpretations, I discovered within just a few pages that it neglects scripture more than consults it. There is enough truth to make someone believe it is all accurate and I feel this book severely misleads people into some very dangerous areas. There is a significant imbalance between what God says things mean and what things mean in ancient mythology, sorcery, magic, etc. It's also very disturbing that the author knows more about pagan terminology than biblical symbology. I have studied biblical symbology for 12 years, interpreted over 40,000 dreams - also wrote a book on it and teach on the prophetic. My advice is a strong STAY AWAY. We don't study the false to understand the real. We do not have to study paganism to understand God's perspective on symbolic meanings.

I was very excited when I flipped through this book in my local Christian bookstore. I am a pastor and seminary professor and always looking to find good background information on the Bible. When I got this book, I was shocked at all the craziness within the pages!!This book is filled with errors.For example, under the section of "NIMROD" the author states; "Truly, this was a man prepared for the call on his life, which was to supply the children of Adam from Cain's lineage with an alternative culture and religion..."Nimrod lived after the flood. The entire lineage of Cain ALL DIED IN THE FLOOD!! Only Noah and his wife and kids survived. This is basic Bible 101.This is only one example of the errors in this book and there are hundreds!!She states that MELCHIZEDEK was "the priest of all creation, he officiated at the only Creator altar on the planet to propitiate the damage done by Lucifer's rebellion and the subsequent demonic host evicted from heaven to terrorize the earth."She states that Daniel was a prophet and the CHIEF OF THE MAGI in Babylon!She states that Jehovah stopped the use of CAVES OF DIVINATION because people were worshipping other gods beside Him.She states that Adam reigned over the earth for 70 years after his exile from Eden, then was dethroned by the serpent. (See SACRED NUMBERS)She teaches that God was not the actual agent of creation, nor the one who controls the destiny of nations because there are PROTOCRATIC forces and PROTOCRATIC AGENTS (aka- angels) who did and do this for Him.And the list goes on and on and on...Where is she getting this information??Looking at the single list of books she used to get her information, I was very troubled. Many sources were New Age and occultic in nature. These included:The Hebrew GoddessThe Dictionary of Classical Mythology, Religion, Literature, and ArtDictionary of SymbolsAlso... Jesus did not get an entry in this dictionary, nor is His name mentioned much in this book.For that matter Peter, Paul, and Grace are also missing.

I was asked to teach a class on prophecy, so I bought several books to help with my studies. This was a well written book that provided other perspectives to assist me with teaching. The author knows the subject and did a fine job of imparting the knowledge and experiences of his life path.

I've only had it a couple of weeks, but so far it has not been helpful because everything I look up seems to give me the occult meanings and history instead possible biblical meanings. I can appreciate the research that went into the book, but I would have preferred a more positive approach and help in interpreting my dreams and visions - I have no occult/witchcraft background, so this book doesn't apply to me. Maybe it will in the future if I start interpreting other people's dreams who have that kind of background.

I purchased this book a few months ago and it has helped me maybe once. I don't like it at all. There has to be a better resource out there. It doesn't have as many basic words as I thought it would. Plus the explanations don't really tell me anything to decipher my dreams. Wish I could return it, because I would!

It's a great resource for those who are just starting to walk in their prophetic gift, it has so much information to help you understand all aspects of the Prophet anointing. Apostle Dr Matthew Stevenson suggested this book to us and he is a Chief Prophet and I learned from this book exactly what that meant.

This book is so detailed. I thought it was going to be a little pocket dictionary with a few words and definitions and explanations but was I wrong! This book is thick and it has every definition of every word that relates to the prophetic including people, places, and times of events.

This is probably my favorite dream/vision book. Besides being helpful with prophetic dreams, it's just plain good information about many different terms that we come across as ministers.

I've looked at a few other seaweed cookbooks, and this one is really lovely. The format feel solid and comprehensive, with modern and attractive photos and good info sections on seaweed cultivation, varieties, and other ingredients that tend to pair well with seaweed. The recipes lean toward the hippie, but between the preserves, condiments, and discussions of how to incorporate seaweed into gnocchi or bread, those who want to use seaweed in a more elevated context could take a lot of inspiration from them. I haven't yet made any, though, so I can't make any claims as to how well they work.All of this shouldn't be exceptional, but in my experience niche cookbooks are often sparse in one area or another, reflecting the limitations of the authors within a niche in terms of taste, interest, or ability to write. At least from my seaweed-novice perspective, Ocean Greens offers great foundational coverage of that segment of the food world.

I love this book. It is everything humans need to know about saving lives while getting maximumamount of nutrition with unbelievable healing capacity from disease from nutrient deficienciesto even (heaven forbid) nuclear fall out. I love cooking with sea weed vegetables. They far surpassland vegetables. We just have to be careful not to denature them with human toxic seasoningslike sugar and msg, et al. Treated with sacred care, seaweeds treat our bodies and mind with thesame sacred care we require to keep our minerals in tact and to balance our brains to optimalefficiency and content. Sea weeds, it doesn't get better than this. Come over for dinner tonight.Every thing about this book is wonderful. Thank you. Aryana

I bought this for dirt cheap, brand new and was pleasantly suprised. It's amazing that with the abundance of sea vegetables and their high nutrient content, we don't consume more of them. Great recipes and beautiful photos.

All the stories in the Myth-O-Mania series are terrific. When I read them with my son I'm always reminded of the animated Hercules movie featuring James Woods as Hades. The stories are Hades' view of the famous Greek myths and "what REALLY happened".If they ever opted to make these into audio books for young people they really ought to get Mr. Woods to do the narrations; it would be a guaranteed hit!!

I liked the book and It was pretty cool, but time goes by so fast for Hades that it's really hard to keep track. It kept saying stuff like "I went back to the underworld, and then one day I decided to go back up too the war. Melendes was so old he had gray hairs on his head!" And apparently five years have passed.

This is such a funny, yet informational, spoof on the traditional myths. Read the whole series, starting with Have A Hot Time, Hades. My 5th grade students absolutely love these books and are very motivated to read!
